Love conquers all!

Jewish, Christian and Muslim youth of the Focolare and the Jerusalem Center for Jewish-Christian Relations share their experience of dialogue in Israel.

Miriam: I’m a teacher of Jewish religion. I’m responsible for group work at the Keshet High School in Jerusalem. For most of my life I have resided in Tel Aviv, but for the last years I’ve lived in Jerusalem.

Only in the past four years have I had personal contact with Israeli Arabs. I met many Arabs on public buses, or on the streets, but I had no dialogue with them. Why? Because I, like many Israelis, had felt that the presence of “others” was a threat, and so they were to be feared. The other was not like myself, and we shared nothing in common.

Some time ago, the Jerusalem Center for Jewish-Christian Relations (JCJCR) asked me to organize meetings between Jews in my school and Armenians in the old part of the city. That is how an activity began that has developed until today.

In pantaloni, sobriamente elegante, capelli corti, trucco e rossetto. È finalmente il suo turno, dopo nove uomini, leader delle principali religioni. Benedetto XVI accompagna con lo sguardo sopra le lenti il suo procedere verso il microfono. È la prima donna a parlare, ma non per questo c’è particolare attesa. Ella rappresenta la novità di questa Assisi 2011, quarto appuntamento di preghiera per la pace, 25 anni dopo quel 27 ottobre 1986, quando Giovanni Paolo II invitò, per la prima volta nella storia dell’umanità, i rappresentanti delle religioni del mondo ad incontrarsi per invocare la pace.

EOC - Sign of Hope

In the International Conference on Alleviating Poverty held last September 24, 2011 at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Luigino Bruni spoke of the Economy of Communion (EOC) as a sign of hope in the era of globalization

Departing from a prepared speech in order to establish a more personal rapport with his audience of 200 conference participants composed of graduate students, professors and people from NGOs as well as government, Bruni began by laying out four premises:

1. Because of globalization, poverty is no longer a domestic issue but an international one.

2. A holistic education (not just intellectual but work education) is an issue in poverty and a Christian message to society is that work is part of the character of a good person.

3. Today’s conditions call for a redefining of the relationships between state, government, economy and civil society because it is no longer enough that redistribution of wealth be left entirely to government. There is a call for social entrepreneurs to intervene directly with social problems and not just through the tax system.

4. The fourth premise is that the financial crisis indicated that something is wrong with the system and that if uncorrected, society risks a second, more fatal “heart attack”. A change of lifestyle is necessary to avoid a repetition of the crisis.

Dalle montagne Tatra: In cammino verso il Genfest

Carissimi tutti,

vogliamo condividere con voi come abbiamo vissuto il nostro weekend (14 – 16.10.2011) che abbiamo organizzato per preparare il Genfest 2012. A Svit, sulle montagne Tatra, ci siamo incontrati 40 giovani provenienti da tutta la Slovacchia. Sabato, dopo una riflessione su un discorso di Chiara fatto ai giovani durante la GMG in Spagna nel 1989, abbiamo presentato il significato e la storia del Genfest, accompagnati da alcune esperienze dei Genfest passati. Quelli tra noi che avevano partecipato al weekend di preparazione Budapest (settemebre scorso) hanno raccontato le loro esperienze dando delle informazioni specifiche.

Di grande beneficio e incoraggiamento sono state le due risposte di Emmaus ai giovani radunati a Budapest durante il sua recente visita in maggio scorso. Nel pomeriggio sono seguiti dei workshop, durante i quali ci siamo divisi in quattro gruppi.

Ognuno ha presentato molte idee per il programma sul progetto "ponti". All’inizio molti avevamo dei dubbi se possiamo raggiungere delle idee significative e fattibili, invece, grazie alla bella atmosfera tra noi, tante proposte buone sono venute fuori!

Assisi: 360° Dialogue

An event that will hold surprises of the Spirit: this is the Focolare’s expectation as the Day of Prayer and Reflection for Peace and Justice in the World draws closer. Pope Benedict XVI has called for this event, which will mark the 25th anniversary of the historical gathering that John Paul II desired to be held at Assisi in 1986.

“It was an inspiration,” Maria Voce (Emmaus), president of the Focolare told the Roman Observer newspaper, “an inspiration that will certainly mark a new acceleration and depth in living one’s personal religious convictions in the service of peace. This is especially urgent today when the absurd fear of religion is spreading. Religion, which by its very nature is a vital source of peace, is being blamed as the primary cause of many conflicts, tensions, phobias, intolerance and religious persecutions that are teeming around the world.”

Assisi: Capitale mondiale della Pace

Domani 27 ottobre è la Giornata di riflessione, dialogo e preghiera per la pace e la giustizia nel mondo

La macchina organizzativa e l'intera città di Assisi è in pieno fermento per la giornata di riflessione, dialogo e preghiera per la pace e la giustizia nel mondo che si terrà giovedì 27 ottobre nella città di San Francesco. Assisi si sta preparando a questo importantissimo evento, che riconferma la città del poverello "capitale mondiale della pace",  con veglie di preghiera e funzioni religiose.

Tantissimi sono i pellegrini e i giornalisti attesi ad Assisi per l'arrivo del Papa. Per l'occasione sono stati allestiti 2 centri accoglienza, 5 sale stampa per i giornalisti e 10 mega schermi posizionati sulla piazza della Basilica Superiore ed Inferiore di San Francesco, nella Porziuncola e nella piazza di Santa Maria degli Angeli.

Spiritualità dell’unità: Gesù Eucaristia

Esiste un intreccio profondo tra Ideale dell’unità e Eucaristia, anima, cuore della vita stessa della Chiesa. Ripercorriamo la storia di questa scoperta che ha segnato la vita di Chiara Lubich e di tutto il Movimento dei focolari riprendendo un suo brano di alta spiritualità.

L’Eucaristia ha sempre avuto un ruolo importante nella vita di Chiara Lubich, sin dall’infanzia. La sua vita personale e quella delle sue prime compagne – così come poi di tutto il movimento che si costituirà nei decenni – è stata marcata dall’Eucaristia. E non potrebbe essere che così, se si pensa che Gesù Eucarestia è l’anima, il cuore della vita stessa della Chiesa.

L’azione dello Spirito Santo provocava in Chiara per il carisma dell’unità che le è proprio, e nelle sue prime compagne una forte attrazione a Gesù nell’Eucaristia, al punto che non vedevano l’ora di recarsi a Messa, per condividere con Lui tutta la loro vita.

Europe and Movements – A peaceful demonstration

The voice of Christian-inspired Movements in the field of peace, the fight against poverty, formation, and the family. A journey into some testimonies, in preparation of the 12 May 2012 event in the European Parliament in Brussels.

A base of people, of civil society, that has the future of the continent at heart, not seen as closed or turned back on itself, but at the service of the world. The 12 May event in Brussels will be connected to more than 100 simultaneous events in many other European cities. It shows the vitality of this journey that has taken a stronger hold in the region.

It is enough to remember the large wave of protests that precisely in recent days have rocked the continent and the whole world, to highlight the desire of the base to make its voice be heard. Also on 12 May in the European Parliament of Brussels a voice will be heard, the voice of the Christian-inspired Movements who with their efforts in the areas of peace, the family, school, poverty, education and more, are continuing to strengthen the social fabric of the continent in ways that are convincing.

For example, Belgium, the country that hosts the 12 May event, with Brussels seat of the major European institutions, is undergoing a profound institutional crisis which has held it politically paralyzed for one year and a half. In this same context, a group of Movements and Communities – which grew from 8 to 25 to 50 – are rediscovering the gift of diversity as a mutual enrichment, a possible key for overcoming divisions among Flemish, Walloons and Germans-speakers. In the spring, the francophone and Flemish Charismatic Movement held a national evening of prayer for the unity of the country. The national work committee of Together for Europe in Belgium has also promised an information day about Together for Europe which will be open to all Movements and associations in the country, and a meeting to explain the event to European officials.

HAPPY DIWALI!

Auguriamo ai nostri amici indù “HAPPY DIWALI!”

Per chi non lo sa, Diwali è la festa delle luci e dura cinque giorni. E’ la festa più importante dell’anno e si celebra il “Nuovo anno” secondo il calendario indu’. La festa comincia il lunedì 24 e finirà il venerdì 28 ottobre. Il Diwali celebra il ritorno di Ramu, incarnazione del dio Vishnu dall’esilio. Il popolo della città al ritorno di Ramu accese file (avali) di lampade (dipa) in suo onore, da qui il nome Dipawali o più semplicemente Diwali. In questi giorni le case vengono illuminate da lampade a olio chiamate “Diyas”, da lampadine colorate, per attirare l’attenzione e la benevolenza della dea Lakshmi, anche con fuochi d’artificio e scoppi di petardi lungo le strade di tutte le città e anche nei villaggi più remoti. Il Diwali ha un significato religioso per gli indù, i sikh ed i giainisti, ma è celebrato da tutti, perché segna un nuovo inizio spirituale e un rinnovamento di impegni per i valori della famiglia.

E’ tradizionalmente simbolo di gioia, di amore, di riflessione, di risoluzione, di perdono, di luce e di conoscenza.

A revenge of LOVE

The story of one young Brazilian girl who was able to forgive in a drastic family situation. And the fruits are not lacking…

I was just a girl, stunned by sorrowful experiences within the family and by the lack of real and stable affections, when I met some persons who possessed a joy which I had thought impossible to experience in life.

They shared this gift with me and through them I discovered God and His love towards me.

For me, it was like perceiving a light during the night that guided me safely along the way of love, which was exactly what I was looking for.

The youngest of four siblings, I’ve always had a difficult relationship with my parents which was marked by many clashes, quarrels and discussions that ended up in violence. Besides our family, my father also had had children with another woman. For this reason and for the aggressive behavior he exhibited towards my mother, we brothers and sisters rejected him as our father and instead of loving him, we hated him even more.

Then little by little, my brothers and sisters all left home, to study or to get married. I was the only one left with my parents. One day my father beat up my mother so badly that I had to bring her to hospital. After that, she went to live with my sister, and I was the only one left at home with my father.

I primi tempi del Movimento dei Focolari più volte sono stati narrati da Chiara Lubich. Ma c'è uno scritto del 1960 della fondatrice dei Focolari – edito per la prima volta per La Parola di Dio curato da Florence Gillet –, che quelle tappe che la Parola di Dio ha fatto fare nella vita, nelle scelte, a lei e alle sue prime compagne lo racconta sotto una nuova luce. Non senza far fare al lettore un passo interiore e spirituale.

«E già avevamo fatto i primi sforzi per attuarla, nutrendoci dell’Eucaristia e trovando in Gesù crocifisso – specialmente nel Suo abbandono – la chiave per mantenerla. Gesù, quindi, aveva potuto – lo speriamo – vedere nella nostra minuscola comunità realizzate le Sue parole: «Dove due o tre sono riuniti nel mio nome ivi sono Io in mezzo ad essi» (1). Fu pressappoco a questo punto della nostra storia che si iniziò a scegliere periodicamente una frase compiuta del

Vangelo come norma del nostro vivere.

An Unforgettable Day

Honey, an Education student, shares how she deals with the pressures of college life.

One Thursday morning, our classmates were very busy planning for a coming variety show competition for English class, a preparation which would serve as our final exam.

On that same day, our Developmental Reading professor entered the classroom and announced that our project was to come up with a mini book which had to be submitted the following Monday. The news terrified us and threw us all into confusion. We no longer knew which of these two requirements we had to prioritize.

Later on, our Field Study professor instructed us to work on our individual portfolios, that is, a compilation of what we had observed in a high school in Davao, checked and signed by our cooperating teacher. This was an additional burden for us since that school was far from our university.

The problem worsened when practices for our variety show began. The majority of my classmates were so passive and uncooperative that this led to the group’s disintegration. At that moment, I was quite upset, and my heart full of anger and hatred. At home, my sister scolded me for not helping out with the household chores. With all these pressures building up inside me, it was easy to get into an argument with her.

Peace prayers this month in Assisi

On October 27 representatives of Christian communities and world religions will celebrate a Day of Prayer for Peace with Benedict XVI in the city of St. Francis. The event will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the historic 1986 meeting called for by Pope John Paul II.

In this time of great upheaval, when “the walls in which the various civilizations live with their individual cultures are crumbling, a city-world without walls can be seen on the horizon, full of hope,” notes philosopher Giuseppe Zanghi.

Chiara Lubich offered this same vision in London in 2004 to an audience representing numerous religions. She spoke of the future for a multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious society in our time, with the risk of a clash of civilizations. Chiara also recalled St. Augustine’s vision at the collapse of the Roman Empire, which was also under the pressure of a large migration of peoples — not the end of a civilization, but the birth of a new world.

In the 1970s, speaking at an international congress of young people, Chiara asked them to “not close their eyes at the sight of this torment of humanity but to conscientiously enter into the gestation of the new world.”

“You are here,” she added, “to be formed in a ‘global vision,’ to become ‘people with a global mind.’”

Un “sogno” che continua

25 anni dopo ad Assisi 2011 ci saranno tutti. Impressionante scorrere la lista dei partecipanti alla Giornata di riflessione, dialogo e preghiera per la pace e la giustizia nel mondo

I Paesi del mondo rappresentati saranno più di 50. Arriveranno delegazioni anche da Egitto, Israele, Pakistan, Iran, India e Arabia Saudita. La notizia della convocazione della Giornata ha avuto un’eco significativa, spontanea e immediata in tutto il mondo cristiano Le delegazioni saranno numerose e di alto profilo. Per le Chiese d’Oriente, saranno presenti 17 delegazioni. Ci sarà anche il Patriarca Ecumenico, Sua Santità Bartolomeo I, che guiderà la delegazione del Patriarcato Ecumenico di Costantinopoli. E ci saranno anche l’arcivescovo di Canterbury, Rowan Williams in rappresentanza della Comunione Anglicana e il Segretario Generale del Consiglio ecumenico delle Chiese, il rev. Olav Fykse Tveit. 13 in tutto le delegazioni delle Chiese e Comunità ecclesiali d’Occidente.

It is challenging to be patient

I was on my way to work at the hospital one morning and, fifteen minutes into the drive, I found myself in the middle of a traffic jam on the expressway. Starting to get a little nervous, I remembered the Word of Life: “Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ” (Eph 4:32). The only thing that mattered was to continue loving —even in this jam. I managed to get onto a side road and continued on my way, but I still wasn’t sure I would be on time for work with all of the stop signs and school crossings along the way. Two blocks from work the gates at a railroad crossing began to come down. Two freight trains and a passenger train were coming. I remained patient. At work, I attended to the patients with the same love I had tried to live on my way to work. The husband of one of my patients expressed his gratitude for the special care his wife had received. I worked the whole day with a nurse with whom I hadn’t worked before, and she shared many things about her family and her work. When I left the hospital that day, I had a great joy and felt God had been with me every step of the way.

Rendi visibile il cambiamento

“Rendi visibile il cambiamento”. Il titolo del meeting annuale dei Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) dei Focolari  della regione a nord di San Paolo. Non solo uno slogan. Domenica, al Centro Congressi della cittadella dei focolari di Vargem Grande Paulista, i giovani lo hanno mostrato con i fatti e col linguaggio e la creatività loro tipica: canzoni impegnate, coreografie, tante tante testimonianze, in  un dialogo vivo tra palco e sala.

Sin dalle prime battute si è respirato un clima di festa. Immediato il coinvolgimento dei giovani  che affollavano l’auditorium. E’ questo che vogliono: il cambiamento.

E’ possibile. Lo ha dimostrato Fernanda che da anni lavora con i ragazzi  di Jardin Margarida, un barrio di periferia. Lo sport può essere il campo di allenamento per crescere. Le regole del gioco, improntate alla fraternità. Si prepara una nuova generazione di politici. Con la scuola Civitas promossa dal Movimento politico per l’unità. Ne parla Pedro. E racconta di una campagna elettorale dove tutto è trasparenza e dialogo aperto con i cittadini.

Spiritualità dell’unità: amore reciproco

Riflessione su un altro punto della spiritualità dell’unità: l’amore reciproco. La scoperta del “comandamento nuovo” di Gesù, non come optional, ma come il modo di essere e di presentarsi al mondo.

Il Vangelo che Chiara Lubich e le sue compagne leggevano nei rifugi era una continua scoperta, era un libro che loro in fondo prima non conoscevano: nessuno gliene aveva mai parlato in quei termini. «Gesù agisce sempre da Dio. Per poco che dai, ti stracarica di doni. Sei sola e ti trovi circondata da mille madri, padri, fratelli, sorelle e d’ogni ben di Dio che poi distribuisci a chi non ha nulla».

Così per tutte loro si consolidava la convinzione, perché basata sull’esperienza, che non esistesse situazione umana problematica che non trovasse una risposta, esplicita o implicita, in quel piccolo libro che riportava parole di cielo.

Gli aderenti del movimento nascente si immergevano in esse, se ne nutrivano, si rievangelizzavano e sperimentavano che quanto Gesù diceva e prometteva si verificava immancabilmente.
