Ordinary, extraordinary life

One day, when she was a child, her mother asked her to clear the table. Chiara Luce’s immediate response was: “I don’t want to,” folding her arms across her chest and walking out of the room. Within a few steps, however, she turned back saying: “How does that story from the Gospel go about the father who asks his son to go to the vineyard… Mummy, help me put my apron on,” and proceeded to clear the table.

Chiara Luce Badano had a generous and lively personality. She was born in 1971 in Sassello, Italy, an only child conceived after 11 years of marriage.

At age 9 she heard about the Focolare’s ideal of unity from some of her friends and discovered a new way of living and thinking which satisfied her thirst for God. After a Focolare youth gathering she wrote: “I have rediscovered the Gospel in a new light. I realized that I wasn’t a true Christian because I wasn’t living it fully. Now I want to make this magnificent book the only aim in my life.” Her parents embraced the spirituality of unity as well, and they lived it together.

SEMANA MUNDO UNIDO 2011

 

En el cierre de la semana,  el domingo nos fuimos a una plaza popular, con la idea de conocer nuevos amigos y compartir una tarde con nuevos candidatos a la unidad. Fue muy lindo porque pudimos darnos cuenta de cuantos jóvenes quedan contentos al conocer nuestras ideas y están dispuestos a construir lazos de fraternidad, tan solo hay que proponernos a buscarlos e invitarlos. Compartimos así una tarde con diversos juegos y dinámicas muy divertidas que nos ayudaron a conocernos y a donarnos unos a otros, pero lo más importante es la oportunidad de construir la unidad con los demás, aún a pesar de las diferencias. Fue un momento de sentirnos realmente protagonistas de la construcción de un mundo unido, somos diversos pero compartimos el deseo de realizar un mundo nuevo.

SETTIMANA MONDO UNITO

Nel fine settimana siamo andati a una piazza popolare, con il desiderio di incontrare nuovi amici e condividere una serata con altri candidati all'unità. È stato molto bello perché ci siamo resi conto quanti giovani sono felici di conosce i nostri ideali e sono anche disposti a costruire legami di fraternità. Bisogno soltanto andar al loro incontro. Condividiamo quindi una serata con diversi giochi ed altri attività varie che ci hanno dato l’occasione di conoscere l’un l’altro, ma soprattutto anche l'opportunità di costruire unità, nonostante tutte le diversità. Sono stati momenti nei quali ci siamo sentiti protagonisti nella costruzione di un mondo unito. Siamo diversi, ma condividiamo il desiderio di fare un mondo nuovo.

ENTREGA DE REGALOS EN NAVIDAD

Una de nuestras actividades que ya forma parte de nuestra vida como Jóvenes por un Mundo Unido (JMU) es el compartir con niños y adultos la época navideña, donde  experimentamos que no todo es dar, si no también el recibir; Así en cada ocasión que nos encontramos con estas personas de escasos recursos, recibimos tanto: una sonrisa, un agradecimiento, un abrazo  que nace de la convivencia con las comunidades de nuestro país. Este año visitamos  Patzun y San Martin donde alrededor de 250 niños se hicieron presentes.

CONSEGNA DI REGALI A NATALE

Una delle nostre attività che fanno già parte della nostra vita come Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) è quello di condividere con i bambini e gli adulti la stagione natalizia, dove noi sperimentiamo che non si tratta solo di dare, ma anche di ricevere. Così in ogni occasione dove troviamo queste persone con risorse limitate, riceviamo tanto: un sorriso, un grazie, un abbraccio che deriva dal vivere insieme con le comunità del nostro paese. Quest'anno abbiamo visitato Patzun e San Martin, dove erano presenti circa 250 bambini.

Tears of Hope

Lance, a youth from Mati in southern Philippines, shares his experience of love and hope amid a very tense situation in his family.

Lance met the Gospel life of unity through a friend during meeting with some young members of the Focolare in Mati City, Davao Oriental. What struck him were their concrete experiences in living the Gospel. He narrates, “It became like a burning fire that I always carry in my heart. The vivid smiles of these young people remained with me… Now, through the life shared together and the strong unity of our community in Mati, this way of life has helped me handle problems that come my way. Maybe if I hadn’t met this life, I would have been much worse off.”

“One day,” he continues, “I felt my parents giving each other the cold shoulder. I was sure something was happening. True enough, the tension between them mounted and suddenly they were shouting at each other and I didn’t know why.” For Lance, fights between other married couples were normal, but not when it came to his parents. According to him, “They’ve raised us up without quarrels or arguments between them. That’s why I was pretty scared that such a thing was happening.”

Los Angeles – Stepping Stones to Unity

Il primo ottobre circa 100 giovani si sono radunati per una presentazione del Genfest 2012 a Los Angeles. Eravamo di varie città vicine e lontane: San Diego, Madera, Santa Clarita e il Bay Area.

Il titolo che avevamo scelto per la giornata era "Stepping Stones to Unity." Fra canti, workshop, giochi e presentazioni, noi Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) abbiamo dato uno sguardo sulle varie attività a livello locali e mondiale, trapassando l’idealità della nostra vita.

Presentando il Genfest 2012 tramite un video clip dell’ultimo Genfest, abbiamo messo in evidenza i diversi aspetti del programma: le danze, i canzoni, le esperienze di vita e le migliaia di giovani che provengono da tutto il mondo per partecipare a questo grande evento. Poi, abbiamo annunciato il prossimo Genfest 2012 che si terrà a Budapest dal 31 agosto al 2° settembre 2012.

Many warm greetings from all of us here in Singapore!!!

We would like to update you a little about what we have during this year. Actually, it has been a very special year.

During the first months, we were invited by a parish to animate a youth group. We decided to present Chiara Luce’s life, an Italian young girl who passed away in 1990, leaving behind a trail of light due to her radical witness of the Gospel. It was a success!! Many young people were touched by her life. After that, we started meeting each month in order to follow her example in putting the Gospel into practice and share our experiences taking one phrase of the Gospel at a time. In fact, each meeting turned out to be a powerful moment! It did not matter whether we were four or fifteen; what mattered was that we were slowly slowly learning to live the Gospel. We hope we can all come together to the Genfest in Budapest! 

Last June, we had our three-day meeting where many youth attended. Since we were all very enthusiastic after that meeting, the first thing we did was to set up a “group page” on Facebook where each one could maintain contact and be updated.

Secondly, in view of the upcoming Genfest, we started rehearsing in order to compose two songs for this international event. The musical band is made up of young people of different ages: from teenagers to young adults. We meet once a week and during these practice sessions we try to maintain an atmosphere of mutual love, listening to one another in depth during the sharing of ideas.

Aggiornamento dell'Estate 2011 di alcuni GMU sparsi per il veneto (tra cui 2 vicentine)
Quest'estate, a Scicli (RG), è accaduto qualcosa di veramente speciale. In tredici, tra GMU e nostri amici, abbiamo avuto modo di passare una vacanza davvero unica e inaspettata. La proposta di organizzare un campo di volontariato per seguire la colonia estiva del Centro Diurno per minori in difficoltà del Comune di Scicli, arriva questa primavera. Suor Lucinda, la responsabile del Centro, quando la contattiamo è subito commossa, “Quest'estate sarei stata da sola!” ci dice. Ciò che le proponiamo sembra cadere a pennello! A questo punto, bisogna incominciare a pensare un po' di cose, quindi iniziamo a vederci a Padova per diverse settimane. Grazie all'aiuto di persone speciali che ci permettono di trovare e usare due pulmini 9 posti, riusciamo a risolvere diversi problemi legati al trasporto dei bambini. Il centro dove abbiamo svolto le attività è il convento del “Rosario” dove vivono tre suore che accolgono circa 35 bambini con difficoltà familiari di vario genere.

The story of Aldie Sario, a youth who has been lifted up from a life of destitution by God’s love

Aldie always likes to share that he was still in kindergarten in Bukas Palad, a social outreach centre of the Focolare in Agdao, Davao del Sur, when he came across the spirituality of unity. Among the programs of Bukas Palad, in fact, is “Support at a distance” which is geared towards the education of underprivileged children. Aldie is one of its hundreds of beneficiaries. He was still small when he and his family started to receive support.

Every year, when school opened, he was excited because he would have new school stuff: new shoes, uniform, etc. Most of his school needs were provided for by the program, even his fare for transportation. But later he realized that they were providing not only material things, but also took care of his spiritual needs. “Every Saturday,” he shares, “together with other children, we would go to a house where we played, sang, danced and watched animated videos about the Gospel. I found out later that ‘that house’ was the Focolare centre.” He could not explain why but he felt a certain attraction while attending meetings and when people shared their experiences: how they loved Jesus by helping out at home, how they made up with others especially after a fight, or assisted classmates in school, etc.

Scenografia tecnica, programma, allestimento… Dall’11 al 14 novembre, abbiamo fatto il primo incontro a Budapest tra i componenti delle commissioni dedicati a questi settori in Ungheria e al centro internazionale a Roma. Durante questi giorni abbiamo potuto fare un sopralluogo dove si svolgeranno i vari momenti che compongono il nostro incontro mondiale: Genfest 2012, ma più che altro, è partita tra tutti noi la comunicazione, si sono allacciati i rapporti personali, condizione indispensabile per il lavoro comune.

Venerdì sera, durante spontanea cena, Chicco e Sara, i responsabili della produzione e Gegè, responsabile della costruzione del palco, hanno potuto conoscere Nóri e Berci insieme alla lingua ungherese. Si sentiva che aveva inizio l’atmosfera del Genfest!

Il giorno seguente abbiamo visitato i luoghi dei previsti appuntamenti del Genfest. Non bisogna nemmeno dire che sono piaciuti moltissimo anzi, abbiamo provato ad immaginare alcune proposte arrivate, lì sul posto, vicino al Danubio. La Basilica ha fatto dilagare un unanime successo e eravamo particolarmente contenti di aver potuto visitare nella parte inferiore della Basilica, le tombe di personaggi famosi, tra cui quella di Puskas Ferenc. Naturalmente tutti sapevano a quale squadra aveva dato il più grande successo.

Occupy Wall Street (OWS): a cry to be heard

Maria, can you help us to understand this OWS movement ?

In time the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) Movement may be seen as giving great impetus to reform Finance. Inspired by the Arab Spring and the indignados’ manifestation in Madrid, OWS started on Sept. 17, 2011 near the Wall St. area, the symbol for the financial world. It shows participatory democracy in action. It began unperceived with little media coverage, but by October 15, OWS had spread to 951 cities in 82 countries. It was not intended to be restricted to the US or Finance, but to bring attention to the world crisis. It was a cry for economic justice, responsibility, democracy and human dignity. For Christians, it could be seen as a cry for God.

In your opinion, what is really happening in front of Wall Street?

To understand why Wall St. was picked as a symbol for protest, we need to revisit the financial crisis in 2008, when the US government bailed out banks that had brought about near collapse through irresponsible and often unethical financial practice, fed by greed. The market showed itself to be inefficient, imperfect, and irrational. To prevent financial meltdown, the US government injected $700 billion under TARP. Once the banking sector recovered, bankers continued with their self-serving practice and excessive compensation. Despite repeated liquidity injections by government, Wall Street forgot the purpose of banking, which is to provide support to the economy. Unemployment continued to rise. This was seen by the citizen as privatization of gains and socialization of losses. The movement has been criticized for not having any agenda, but what is of importance to the demonstrators is clear. Economic justice is one, manifested by protest against income and tax inequality, with the rallying cry of the “99%”. The young worry about employment and reduction in education spending, and older people are concerned about their pension, as excessive speculation led to turbulent financial markets, eroding savings and rendering planning difficult. OWS denounces economic injustice and the corruption of politics by the financial sector, a main lobbying force and contributor to political campaigns, thus paralyzing government action for the common good. Included in concern about the future is that for the environment.

Filippine, media e dialogo: quando i giornalisti muoiono

Un’iniziativa di New City Press, la casa editrice filippina dei Focolari, a Palawan, nelle Filippine occidentali, per sostenere il lavoro dei giornalisti che rischiano ogni giorno la vita nella lotta per i diritti umani.

I media, nelle Filippine, vivono una situazione molto critica. Negli ultimi due anni, infatti, tanti giornalisti hanno pagato con la vita il loro servizio alla verità. Come nel massacro del 23 novembre 2009 a Maguindanao (sud delle Filippine), quando 34 giornalisti sono stati uccisi a causa di dispute politiche e tribali. Anche altri colleghi che lottavano per i diritti umani sono stati minacciati, e alcuni anche uccisi. Uno dei casi più celebri è stato quello del Dottore Gerry Ortega, ambientalista e giornalista, assassinato il 24 gennaio 2011 per il suo impegno contro il diboscamento illegale a Palawan (isola delle Filippine occidentali).

Our Life and Beauty

One of the last honorary doctorates bestowed on Focolare founder Chiara Lubich before her death was an honorary doctorate in Art by the Catholic University of Maracaibo, Venezuela. Following are excerpts from her acceptance speech.

Right from the beginning, we always had an ardent desire in our hearts: that of shouting out with our lives, with words, through the arts, that God is Beauty … We have always wanted to arrange everything around us in such superior harmony as to make of our dwelling place a corner that mirrors nature, which simply by its presence elevates and draws one’s soul to God.

This is reflected in the welcoming simplicity that distinguishes our homes, our centres and the little cities … In addition, this vocation has made it possible for many artists to find a source of inspiration in the spirituality of unity …

Spot antidroga

«Un argomento importante non giustifica un comunicatore noioso».

«Se il cammello di Gheddafi viaggia a 60 km all’ora, quanti chilometri percorrerà in due ore e mezzo?». È una domanda semplice per adolescenti dai 16 anni in su. Ma quando viene proposta dal simpatico presentatore dello Sconvolt Quiz del programma tv Le Iene alle sette di mattina, all’interno di una discoteca a ragazzi e ragazze frastornati da ore e ore di musica “a palla”, condita da alcol e droghe più o meno leggere, la domanda può diventare un quesito insolubile.

I volti intorpiditi e affannati dei giovani intervistati – che azzardano risposte improbabili («Dunque: se la velocità è spazio diviso tempo… sei per due fa dodici… vero?») – implorano, invano, un suggerimento dall’impassibile intervistatore.

Il premio previsto per la risposta esatta (una maglietta o un cappellino del programma Le Iene) resterà una chimera.

Our Common Humanity

“How can we explain the psychological level of solidarity, cooperation and interdependence among people?” Stephen F.

I wish to address the concept of “our common humanity” through the theme of freedom and a sense of connection that comes from abandoning our attachments. Let me explain it through the story of American astronaut Rusty Schweickart, during the flight of Apollo 9 to the moon in 1969. On the first part of the flight, the crew was kept so busy with tasks and fixing their equipment that no one was looking out of the windows. Only as they were orbiting the globe while awaiting their return to Earth, did Schweickart glance outside.

Oltre la frammentazione

Le istanze degli indignati richiedono un nuovo modo di pensare e di studiare. La risorsa dell’Istituto universitario Sophia di Loppiano. A due passi da Firenze.                                                              

Dalla pubblicazione del libro di Hessel del 2010 (Indignatevi! ‑ Add Editore) le proteste sono dilagate in 951 città di 82 Paesi. Motivi non ne mancano: precarietà, sistema finanziario, crisi politiche. In Italia, la manifestazione di Roma del 15 Ottobre 2011 ha evidenziato, per questo movimento, il rischio di restare ostaggio della violenza. Per avere un futuro politico occorre saper coniugare la spinta personale con un progetto collettivo condiviso e duraturo. Non basta l’annuncio della nonviolenza, è necessario educarsi a essa; non basta gridare al cambiamento senza il rispetto reciproco, elemento non accessorio della democrazia.

Bangui: un oasi di pace ma...

E pensare che tutto é cominciato qui: la storia ci insegna che le prime comunitá di uomini sono nate in Africa. Arrivati qui e guardandoci attorno é stato il primo pensiero. Davanti agli occhi ci si presenta un altro mondo: strade dove si alterna il passaggio di macchine e persone che trainano carretti pieni di tronchi o altro da vendere, disordinatamente baracche al posto di case nascoste dalla natura rimasta ancora selvaggia. Questo forte impatto é stato smorzato subito dalla gioia ed accoglienza che la comunitá ci ha dato. Questa gioia é stata confermata dai volti sorridenti e curiosi di tanti bimbi con cui abbiamo avuto l’opportunitá di passare il nostro tempo. Le nostre mattinate sono state invase da una settantina di bambini e ragazzi di vari quartieri di Bangui. Il tempo insieme a loro volava tra partite di calcio, tiro alla fune, bans e tanti altri giochi.

Steps towards the Genfest: 2012 Schedule

Hello to everyone! We are the Youth for a United World (Y4UW) from Castanhal, Belém area, North Brazil and we are moving on with our Genfest preparations.

Some ideas have already started to “boil” and we think that these ideas could also be shared with Youth for a United World (Y4UW) living in other cities.

For example, the proposed "Talent Festival" should be built step-by-step through workshops with the Y4UW. In this way, all together we can create the criteria, bring out the talents, decide the motto and prepare all the works that are needed. It would be good to invite groups of young people of our own parish, neigbourhood and all the other youth we can get in contact with.

Due mesi di Occupy Wall Street

Il 17 novembre il movimento torna in piazza, nonostante lo sgombero di Zuccotti Park. Al di là delle modalità della protesta, il disagio che esprimono è condiviso: e le voci corrono su internet

Zuccotti Park e Liberty Square saranno pure stati sgomberati, ma per capire che la storia non finisce qui basta guardare la data: oggi, 17 novembre 2011, sono passati due mesi da quando il movimento Occupy Wall Street – che ne ha generati a centinaia, da Occupy Portland a Occupy Denver – è iniziato. Per questo gli (ex, almeno allo stato attuale) dimostranti hanno annunciato per oggi, anche in occasione della giornata internazionale dello studente – in cui sono previste anche in Italia manifestazioni per il diritto allo studio e contro i tagli all'istruzione – una nuova serie di azioni. Nessuno si azzardi a dire che sono dei dormiglioni: alle 7 del mattino – le 13 in Italia – si riuniranno a Liberty Square, prima che suoni la campana che dà inizio agli scambi in borsa, per «mettere Wall Street di fronte alle storie di tante vittime dell'ingiustizia economica», come si legge sul loro sito. Alle 15 si sposteranno in metropolitana per leggere queste storie ai pendolari, e due ore più tardi a Foley Square, di fronte al municipio, in sostegno ai lavoratori colpiti dalla crisi. Infine, accompagnati dalla musica, marceranno sui ponti della città.

Fraternamente "DENTRO"

Da diversi mesi i Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) di Milano hanno avuto l’ocassione di intraprendere un iniziativa di grande importanza sociale presso il carcere di San Vittore; l’animazione delle messe all’interno del carcere, Elena ci racconta cosa e come lo ha vissuto.

“Una mattina di novembre dell’anno scorso ricevo una mail da una Giovane per un Mondo Unito con un’inedita proposta: andare ad animare la messa al carcere di San Vittore, il carcere più antico di Milano. Non sapevo si potesse animare una messa in carcere! Per la verità non mi ero nemmeno tanto posta il problema di se e come i detenuti potessero far messa.

Insomma scopro che si può. E mi piace l’idea di fare tutto ciò insieme ad altri ragazzi e ragazze come me vogliosi di svegliarsi alle sei per essere alle sette e mezza davanti al carcere e in mezzo alla gelida brina invernale!

Don Pietro, uno dei due preti presenti a San Vittore, vuole però incontrarci prima. Non solo perché si provi ad infilare insieme qualche nota intonata delle canzoni che dovremo fare, ma anche perché vuole prepararci a quello che vivremo. Non è facile come sempre e non sarà una messa come le altre.

Ci attende un compito sottile d’amore: vivere questa collaborazione con naturalezza; ma allo stesso tempo non dimenticare la dimensione in cui stanno vivendo i nostri compagni di panca – che poi di panche non ce ne sono e si sta tutti in piedi!

Non dimenticare per avere quell’accortezza, quella sensibilità, quel rispetto per la vita altrui.

Normale o straordinario?

Diamo voce in questa rubrica alle storie dei tanti giovani italiani che si impegnano nel quotidiano per il bene di tutti. Iniziamo con la testimonianza dei volontari nella Liguria colpita dalle alluvioni

Domenica 13 novembre una ventina di ragazzi piemontesi sono scesi in Liguria, nelle zone colpite dall’alluvione, e si sono sporcati di fango fino al mento col sorriso. La settimana precedente, di ritorno da un viaggio, era nata tra alcuni l’idea di incominciare a essere testimonianza vitale nella società, per rinnovarla partendo dalla fraternità. Dunque, andare a dare una mano a quelle persone diverse da noi, ma con almeno due cose in comune: essere uomini e non potercela fare da soli. Tra tutti, solo due o tre si sono assunti la responsabilità di lanciarsi, ma è così: bisogna spingersi, trainarsi l’un l’altro. I giovani sono così: hanno le energie, ma necessitano di esempi come il pane.
