Helping discover the big picture

I was teaching at a college near Boston. One day I returned an exam to my class. One student was not very happy with the result: her grade was very low. When I asked students for comments, she “attacked” me; according to her, it was my fault that she had done poorly on the test. I asked her a few questions that prompted an even stronger negative reaction from her. I found myself becoming defensive and getting angry. Her reaction was getting too personal. I was thinking “Who do you think you are?” and the like. But then another thought came to mind; I have to take the initiative in loving, even in this tense situation, because Jesus tells me “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:40), which in this case meant, “I was distressed, depressed and angry and you listened to me.”

War Horse

È tornato Steven Spielberg con un racconto-fiume, di oltre due ore, che ricorda il grande cinema avventuroso americano dalla fotografia stupenda di praterie, montagne e di stagioni; con i volti dei personaggi caratterizzati plasticamente (la madre energica, il figlio sognatore e deciso, il padre testardo, la ragazzina romantica, il contadino nonno affettuoso, e così via…) e la voglia di raccontare una storia di affetto tra un ragazzo e il suo cavallo negli anni della Prima guerra mondiale. Era da tempo che quel gran narratore di Spielberg si faceva aspettare per regalarci nell’ultima mezz’ora la cavalcata di Joey, il cavallo nero, sopra ogni barriera: vero momento di forza selvaggia, inno alla libertà naturale. Tutto il resto del film, spettacolare e piacevole, passa in secondo piano rispetto a quella corsa in cui il cavallo sembra trascinare con sé uomini e cose, la storia e il mondo, per superarli. Bellissima. Come l’omaggio finale, ombre scure al tramonto, a John Ford. Val la pena, almeno per questo motivo, non perderlo. Bravissimi gli attori: Jeremy Irvine, Peter Mullan, Emily Watson, Nierls Arestrup e tanti altri.

Everyone has a story: What’s yours?

“This was the car I owned while attending college. Being a poor college student, I was thankful I didn’t have to fill the tank that often”.

“Little did I know when buying my Camry in 1994 that a few years later, I would adopt a little girl born in 1994, and now many years later that girl born in 1994 is driving my 1994 Camry. She’s 17, but the Camry has 235,000 miles on it”.

This is only a microscopic part of the complete set of stories that Toyota is collecting on a specific website about one of the most important vehicles they produced.

This commercial, presented during the last Super Bowl, shows a different face of a Camry, a cult on which millions of people every day lived and live several beautiful moments of their path. We don’t find information about engines, gear, design, prices. On the contrary, we reflect about our car, a treasure chest in which we can find old stories, memories, forgotten meetings…

Terrore degli esami

Mi sono iscritto alla facoltà  di Filosofia e sono felice e curioso di scoprire nuove realtà, incontrare amici diversi, approfondire il mondo del pensiero… Nello stesso tempo, però, per la mia timidezza, sono angosciato fin d’ora all’idea degli esami. Il terrore degli esami mi ha già fatto fare delle non belle figure a scuola, impedendomi di manifestare quanto so e riuscendo solo a cavarmela e a superarli senza grandi risultati.  Ed ora che di esami ne dovrò passare molto, che posso fare? Quando ho sostenuto il mio primo esame all’Università, dopo una notte insonne e un inutile e continuo cercare di autoconvincermi che era una cosa semplice, sono arrivato davanti al professore nervosissimo e in pieno stato confusionale. Così, alla sua prima “impegnativa” domanda su come mi chiamassi, non riuscii a rispondere e me ne andai velocemente.

La timidezza aveva giocato il suo ruolo in questa mia fuga, ma non era la sola causa. Mi resi conto, infatti, di aver investito troppo su quel momento, quasi che da quell’esame dipendesse la mia vita. Analizzando, poi, i miei pensieri dei giorni precedenti, notai un intrecciarsi di realtà che trasformavano un esame universitario nella “resa dei conti” della mia vita. Sentivo che dovevo superarlo perché non potevo permettermi di far durare troppo il tempo degli studi; che dovevo superarlo bene perché così tanti si aspettavano da me.

The participants at the extended meeting of the Commission for the EoC in Eastern Europe, gathered last week at the little town of Faro, Croatia. They left full of enthusiasm and enriched by the communion that each one contributed to.

They went back to their respective nations after this important and committing appointment together. Luigino Bruni was able to underscore in these two days how the life of communion is not easy, that the EoC is a vocation, and that it is impossible to live it for a long time without an on-going formation.

For this reason, in 2013 a Summer school will be held here at Faro for young people, while in 2014 a Congress for the EoC for all of Europe will be held: in the meantime, we need to keep working, each one in their own country, to support and spread the idea of communion in economy. "I feel reborn: full of hope in believing and in loving," said Eva, from Hungary, expressing the impression of many others at the end of these days.

Un saluto pieno di gioia da tutti noi della Polonia!!

Ultime settimane abbiamo vissuto nel freddo che arrivava a -25° C – che avventura! Però nei nostri cuori manteniamo sempre accesa la fiamma dell’amore reciproco! La alimentiamo sfruttando la strada dei 10 passi che stiamo facendo preparandoci al Genfest!

In questi giorni abbiamo avuto anche la possibilità di annunciare dai tetti l’evento di quest’anno! Siamo stati invitati da una stazione radio, per tenere una trasmisione di due ore, dedicata ai giovani. Abbiamo presentato il Genfest 2012, la nostra storia, quella del Movimento dei Focolari, di Chiara Luce! Ma non solo! Quasi un ora abbiamo fatto un dialogo con della gente che stava chiamando al telefono durante la trasmissione.

Ci hanno chiamato dei giovani che chiedevano come trovarci, come poter partecipare al Genfest, come mettersi in contatto coi Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU). Ci ha chiamato anche un ragazzo ebreo chiedendo, anche lui, di poter partecipare al Genfest. Una ragazza ha voluto chiamarci per dire che la sua mamma le aveva appena fatto notare questa trasmissione e stava ascoltando con molta attenzione ed entusiamo – anche lei vuole stringere i contatti con noi!

Per noi tutti è stata una forte esperienza di amore reciproco che portava all’unità! Tanti dei nostri amici giovani ed amici ci hanno fatto un grande tifo e dopo uno di loro ci ha anche scritto: ‘è stata una meraviglia!’

Sì! Per noi è stata la prima occasione di annunicare il Genfest al largo ed infiammare il cuore di tanti giovani! Così vi assicuriamo che ci siamo, ci stiamo ed andiamo avanti nel vivere per il Genfest!!!

A Glimpse of Roland Joffe’s war epic, “There Be Dragons [2011]”

CAUTION: NO DRAGONS were hurt during the production of this film or the construction of this review.

This is not a tale about castles and princesses, valiant knights or oversized ponies. It’s not even about vampires, diabolical villains or their cronies, nor is it situated in medieval dungeons or as the title suggests, about dragons. But this movie does stray from the norm. It backs up a bit (about 70 years ago, into the Spanish civil war) and takes us over uncultivated, uncharted territory filled with atrocities as beastly as fire-breathing, untamed dragons.

A few tips I’m pretty sure this one was never on your “movie radar,” so don’t expect too much – this is not your usual boom and “bling” movie. Keep away from the “critics” and refrain from asking people how they liked the movie. Stop being a skeptic because you don’t need the opinion of others to make it a good film – give it a chance, what’ve you got to lose? Don’t watch it alone. Who will listen to you and comfort you as you rant about how you hate the movie or wake you up during the good parts when you doze off unintentionally? But seriously, movies are simply meant to be enjoyed with a friend.

In Portugal: What Makes the Difference

The secret to being fulfilled, protagonists of the present and builders of the future. Seven hundred youth gather from all over Portugal for a day dedicated to the living Word.

Do you want to know what makes the difference in life? Basing it on living the Word. This is what the gathering was all about, which brought together 700 youths, many of them very young, from all over Portugal, at Our Lady of Boa Nova, a few kilometers outside Lisbon.

Some arrived the day before from the Azores Islands and Madeira. The faces of those who got off the buses coming from the north were weary and sun-burnt following the four or five hour-long journey. But at eleven o’clock when the doors of the auditorium were opened, the meeting hall was quickly filled with a very lively and attentive audience. Everyone was “in sync” as the opening song proclaimed.

Those who had invited them and had prepared the program filled with singing, choreography, testimonies and reflections, had worked for months on end, during one of the busiest periods at most universities her in Portugal when exams are in full swing. And here is another reason why this auditorium of 700 youths was rather extraordinary. Some of them would have to face exams in the coming days, and some had postponed their exams in order to attend at the event.

Centro Luce – Sant’Anastasia

L’esperienza dei GMU di Sant’Anastasia è nata diversi anni fa ed è andata consolidandosi nel tempo dando vita ad un attivo gruppo di giovani uniti dal desiderio di rendere possibile il sogno di un mondo unito. Ed è proprio da questo spirito che è nato e cresciuto, in ciascuno, il desiderio di voler incidere maggiormente sul nostro territorio, di essere concretamente presenti nella nostra città avendo, però, al tempo stesso il cuore aperto sul mondo intero.

Sentivamo, innanzitutto, l’esigenza di avere un luogo fisico dover incontrarci.  La ricerca è stata lunga e consapevole. La stanchezza, a volte, era tanta e, soprattutto, gli elevati costi d’affitto ci sembravano davvero insormontabili… ogni volta, però, ci ricordavamo che era Dio che avrebbe dettato i tempi e che dovevamo avere fiducia in Lui. Una sera, ad un incontro, quando proprio la ricerca sembrava essere diventata estenuante, ci dicemmo con forza che avrebbe Lui scelto il momento giusto  perché la nostra ricerca portasse frutto: il giorno dopo eccoci chiamare da un’agenzia immobiliare. Era proprio il posto che cercavamo: una sala luminosa, al centro del nostro Paese,  su due livelli, versatile… insomma bellissima!

"Economy of Communion" @ United Nations

3 February, during the UN Conference on Eradicating Poverty

During a splendid sunny day, with unusually mild temperatures for New York City at this time of year, on Friday, 3^rd February, our much anticipated event of the Economy of Communion (EOC) was held at the United Nations. Together with the different speakers, we arrived in New York from all over the world (Alexis from Burundi, Claudia from Brazil, Nikko from the Philippines, Elizabeth from Boston, John and Dan from Indianapolis, and other young people from Boston and New York City) between 1^st – 2^nd February, just in time to decide together the last details of the program and to be in tune. The forum that was assigned to us was one of the main meeting halls, with a lot of space and two big screens for our Power-point presentations.

About 50 people participated, among whom 20 representatives from various NGOs and UN delegates of different nations. The event was organized by New Humanity, the non-governmental organization that represents the Focolare Movement, with general consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC). It is not easy to specifiy which nations were present, but for certain there were representatives from Africa, Europe, the Caribbeans and North America. In his excellent introduction, Archbishop Francis A. Chullikatt, Delegate to the UN for the Permanente Observer Mission to the Holy See, underscored the importance of promoting an integral human development at all levels today, drawing from various points of the encyclical Caritas in Veritate.

Il desiderio di impegnarsi per qualcosa di grande e di utile può spingerci verso una certa carriera, ma non sempre l’ambiente universitario risponde alle nostre aspettative e si può essere tentati di rinunciarvi. Con lo slancio che è evidente nella tua lettera, qui molto sintetizzata, sono certo che riuscirai comunque a restare fedele alla tua genuinità e decisione nel percorrere strade di cui sei convinto, coltivando valori in cui credi, al servizio del prossimo.

Nell’affrontare la scelta concreta, per capire in quale settore potresti veramente donarti, cerca di confrontarti con chi ti conosce bene e anche con chi è già su quel cammino, per vagliare le reali possibilità.

Sassone, Rome: Let’s Bridge

Around 70 of us gathered in Sassone, a small town in the suburbs of Rome – just a 20-minute train ride from Rome Termini (Central) Station, for a review of the upcoming Genfest contents. Some have come from Budapest; the beautiful city where this international event is going to be held from 31^st August to 2^nd September 2012. Others from Slovakia, Germany, Portugal and Italy, along with a good representation of extra-European continents: Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Korea, Philippines, Mexico and USA.

This gathering that started on Friday evening and concludes today, has had a quite unusual setting: an awe inspiring snowfall has transformed the premises into fairy tale environment. The atmosphere within the meeting hall is equally beautiful due to the awe inspiring for the strong desire for true and deep relationships based on a constant effort to welcome and listen to one another.

After all, this is what the Genfest is all about: building a united world is possible!

So “Let’s Bridge!”

Befana solidale

Avevamo pensato di organizzare un’attività intitolata “Befana solidale”: donare ai bambini delle famiglie povere del nostro paese, dolci e giochi. Visto che non riuscivamo ad acquistarli, avevamo pensato di chiederle a varie industrie dolciarie e la risposta era positiva! Infatti, alcune aziende dolciarie ci hanno inviato dolci gratuitamente. Sia per motivi di tempo che per motivi di quantità (i dolci non sarebbero stati sufficienti a coprire tutte le esigenze) allora, abbiamo pensato di mettere in circolo l’amore: "gratuitamente avete avuto, gratuitamente avete dato". Abbiamo saputo che i giovani di due parrocchie del nostro paese avevano avuto la stessa idea. Per questo, confrontandoci fra noi, abbiamo deciso di donare, per metà, i dolci che ci erano stati regalati, permettendo loro di donarli ai bimbi più bisognosi.

Ma com’è la storia della befana?

Yogyakarta: Journey to Budapest goes on

The Youth for a United World in Yogyakarta, Indonesia wrote us the following: “On the occasion of its 90th anniversary, the country's biggest Catholic Publishing house invited us to sing our songs for an audience of about 500 staff and delegates. Aside from being a wonderful occasion to introduce ourselves and what we do help build a more united world, it was also a profound experience for many of us of living the present, of loving the next brother or sister which overcame moments of uncertainty. Our songs were in different languages but all spoke of love, unity and tried to reach out to those present, many of whom felt moved to join us in singing a local Javanese song which we decided to sing for them. In appreciation, our hosts joyfully donated Rp. 400.000 (Euro 33) for our Genfest fund! But on that day, we felt that we received so much more. And so, our journey to Budapest continues.”

Lancio del Genfest in Galilea

Sabato 28 gennaio 2012 abbiamo lanciato il Genfest a Nazaret ad una quarantina di giovani amici, provenienti da diverse città e villaggi della Galilea.

Già dal primo momenti si sentiva un’aria speciale, con tanto amore reciproco. Abbiamo iniziato il programma con canti. Poi due di noi hanno introdotto il programma, spiegando il motivo particolare dell’incontro, cioè di lanciare ilGenfest.

Dopo alcuni giochi si è parlato della vita dei Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU). Poi abbiamo guardato insieme un dvd con dei flash sui vari Genfest del passato, seguito con molta attenzione da tutti, e l’invito a tutti di partecipare insieme al prossimo grande evento di Budapest.

L’incontro si è concluso con un rinfresco: un’opportunità per conoscerci di più, parlare, stare insieme.

Ora, il prossimo appuntamento sarà in per aprile ed in quell’incontro vorremmo passare un intero week-end assieme.

From - 15 to + 35: the EOC introduced at all latitudes...

From the USA, to the Cameroons, to Croatia, a truly special weekend

This is a very particular weekend for the presenting of the EOC: yesterday the Economy of Communion and the message of the Youth from Sao Paulo to the World were presented in New York, at the UN, as a side event within the UN conference on eradicating poverty: we are awaiting news from the USA to update everyone.

Always in these same days, in Douala, Cameroons, the first appointments of the delegation for the EOC are taking place with the universities of this big African nation.

On 4th February, at Mariapolis Faro (in Croatia) the meeting for the EOC Commission, extended to all of Eastern Europe, was opened. The “climate” is for certain special, in all senses of the word: the citizens of Faro woke up to a Siberian storm, with strong winds, snow and – 15º, with a number of wolves that circled the Mariapolis in hunger. Despite the harsh weather, the people arrived by car from Bulgaria, Austria, Serbia: the last arrivals at 4:30 a.m.: but the photos tell us that notwithstanding the cold and the road conditions, it was all worth it!

Gibì e DoppiaW: online i fumetti di Walter Kostner

Sono nati negli anni ottanta, ma solo negli ultimi tempi hanno fatto la loro comparsa in un sito e in un blog: Gibì e DoppiaW sono i protagonisti di brevi storie che vogliono far sorridere e pensare.

Sono stati in televisione, in edicola, in libreria e, soprattutto, nelle agende e nelle tasche di tanti di noi, sui biglietti di auguri inviati e ricevuti da piccoli e… da grandi. E ora sono sbarcati sul web.
Gibì e DoppiaW hanno aperto un sito, dove tutti possono trovare uno spazio di serena riflessione grazie a scritti dell’autore, giochi e canti, lettere ed esperienze di educatori, di ragazzi di bambini. Ma sono le strisce del fumetto gli elementi più importanti: come finestre sulla loro vita, le brevi storie di Gibì e DoppiaW ci rendono partecipi di un cammino straordinario e alla portata di tutti; con gli ingredienti dell’umorismo, dello stupore e dell’innocenza.

WYD Rio 2013 official logo is out!

World Youth Day Rio celebrated its first big moment; the announcement of the logo. Yesterday during a ceremony with 100 Brazilian bishops the National Committee unveiled the Logo for the Brazilian WYD.

The main colors of the Logo are green, blue and yellow the same as the Brazilian flag and the elements have a meaning, the heart is the heart of the disciple the, green on the top is the Pão de Açucar the mount where the Christ the Redeemer stands. The white cross is the WYD Cross, in yellow we can see the iconic Christ the Redeemer and the blue means the sea coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The Logo was designed by Gustavo Huguenin a 25 years old from Brazil.

At the ceremony he said "For me it is a great joy to know that my job will be used in the biggest catholic event in the world and it will be associated with a personal meeting between the youth and God himself "

How often do we listen to one another?

Sardegna: “Crossing the Bridge”

“Crossing the Bridge - attraversando il ponte” è il titolo scelto dai Giovani per un Mondo Unito della Sardegna che si ritroveranno, sabato 11 - ad Oristano-  per trascorrere un pomeriggio alternativo, insieme ad altri giovani!

L’invito è rivolto a tutti, tutti i giovani dai 17 ai 30 anni...  compagni di scuola, vicini di casa, colleghi dell’Università o di lavoro...  amici di chat e amici di pizza...  quelli con i quali trascorri solo il sabato sera!!!

TUTTI... coloro che desiderano trascorrere un pomeriggio, per confrontarsi con altri ragazzi che hanno un ideale grande: vivere per costruire un Mondo più unito, al di là delle denominazioni cristiane, delle confessioni religiose o della mancanza di riferimento religioso. TUTTI non possiamo non sentirci interpellati, chiamati in prima persona, dalle sofferenze del mondo e, tramite azioni concrete,  impegnarci a rispondere alle varie sfide quotidiane, sia a livello locale che mondiale. A volte con raccolte di fondi, a volte con eventi sociali o artistici, insomma tutto quello che la fantasia ci suggerisce. Siamo convinti che se ciascuno di noi, partendo da questa visione generale, si concentrasse nel particolare, facendo una zoomata nella propria realtà, si accorgerebbe che lì, anche lui, potrebbe fare la differenza, dando il proprio contributo.

Venticinque anni di Shanti Ashram

Un laboratorio di pace nello spirito di Gandhi, con aziende, scuole e percorsi di dialogo interreligioso. Chiara Lubich lo aveva visitato nel 2001

A metà degli anni ottanta, il dottor Aram, noto pacifista indiano, aveva appena terminato i due mandati come rettore della Gandhigram University in Tamil Nadu, seguiti alla lunga missione di pace in Nagaland, uno degli stati dell’India al confine con la Cina.

In quel tempo, con la moglie Minoti già minata da una forma di artrite reumatoide, era alla ricerca di una località dove stabilirsi. Da tipico gandhiano nello spirito e, soprattutto, nella prassi Aram mirava a trovare una località dove la famiglia avrebbe potuto vivere in modo salutare, ma, allo stesso tempo, al servizio della comunità sul territorio. Dopo varie ricerche si fermò a Kovaipudur, località ad una decina di chilometri da Coimbatore, non lontana dalla statale che porta nel vicino stato del Kerala. Lì, venticinque anni fa, i coniugi Aram, con i figli Kezevino ed Ashok, presero in affitto una piccola casa. Era l’inizio di quello che divenne lo Shanti Ashram, che in questi giorni ha celebrato il quarto di secolo.

A social worker’s school of life

When I was 10, we had our first real experience of hunger…” Emman Nombre, a Focolare youth of Manila, shares his story for New City.

I am one of 72 community workers of Bukas Palad Foundation of the Philippines. Back as a child, I had met the Focolare Movement and the Bukas Palad (BP) Social Center through my parents. In a big family of twelve, I am the eldest with seven brothers and four sisters. Together we have faced many of life’s trials.

When I was 10, we had our first real experience of hunger. Five of my younger siblings developed third degree malnutrition, and doctors declared one sister to have a 50-50 chance of survival, so we brought them to the hospital. My parents then entrusted our younger sister to God because she was having great problems. However, due to the intense care and love of BP staff for my family, little by little, my siblings all recovered. They were given food and medicine.

That time, left at home to wash clothes, I also cooked food for my siblings in the hospital. I also cleaned the house. When my five siblings recovered, Bukas Palad continued to supply food, medicine, and milk and gave us instructions on healthy nutrition. We came to know the Focolare and Bukas Palad Social Center better, and they helped us with our daily needs. Moreover, BP lent us capital to start up a small store selling fried bananas and sweet potatoes. Gradually, our family’s financial situation improved.

Genfest: work in progress

Un fine settimana romano per portare avanti la preparazione del grande evento promosso dai giovani dei Focolari per la fine di agosto in Ungheria. Già prenotati giovani da oltre 40 paesi.

«Il Genfest avrà come messaggio centrale: l’Unità. Anche per questo è stato scelto il titolo “let’s bridge”», racconta Ark Tabin, 23 anni, filippino. Sarà, infatti, la metafora della costruzione di un ponte, simbolo della ‘costruzione’ di rapporti autentici, il filo conduttore del programma che si svolgerà nella Sportaréna di Budapest (palazzetto che può contenere fino a 12.500 persone) e sui ponti che sovrastano il Danubio, dal 31 agosto al 2 settembre 2012.

L’organizzazione dell’evento è già un’esperienza di unità che si fonda sullo sforzo continuo di accoglienza e ascolto dell’altro, che porta al dialogo vero e alla costruzione di rapporti profondi. Una nuova tappa di questa esperienza si svolgerà nei prossimi 11 e 12 febbraio, con una settantina di giovani che si troveranno a Sassone (Roma), per continuare la preparazione del programma della sua 10° edizione.

Quando si superano gli steccati della diversità, nasce un mondo nuovo. Testimonianza di Juanmi, spagnolo a Loppiano.

Vengo dal sud della Spagna, una terra che anticamente è stata abitata da musulmani che hanno vissuto in armonia anche con cristiani ed ebrei. Ma oggi il conflitto con il mondo islamico è molto forte e basta poco per fomentare razzismo e sfiducia, considerato anche il Marocco dista solo 15 Km dalle nostre coste.

Con alcuni amici, ho cercato di fare qualcosa, per cambiare questa situazione. Volevamo dimostrare prima di tutto a noi stessi che è possibile vivere da fratelli tra persone di diversi paesi e religioni. Per questo, insieme a Claude, un amico francese che abita a Tangeri, una città sulla costa marocchina, abbiamo cercato una strada per costruire ponti di fraternità.

Stop talking, start planting!

Fierce as David against Goliath, 13-year-old Felix Finkbeiner electrifies audiences around the world. His message is simple: adults have been talking about environmental threats for more than 20 years, and now it is time to stop talking and start planting millions of trees in order to reduce the excess carbon dioxide that is warming the planet.

It started as a school project in his native Germany. In 2007, at just 9 years of age, Felix explained to his classmates about the climate crisis. He highlighted how heat-trapping gases, such as CO2, are warming the Earth, glaciers are melting, and the sea level is rising. He argued that the consequences are threatening children’s lives, since they expect to live 70-80 years. Following the lead of Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai, the late environmentalist and founder of the Green Belt Movement in Africa, he decided to take action regarding climate change, and he started planting trees. The Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation was established.

Uno dei miei difetti è l'impazienza. Faccio fatica ad aspettare nelle più varie situazioni, e quando mi trovo davanti una persona lenta mi devo sempre sforzare di rimanere tranquillo.

Oggi sono andato a fare la spesa. C'era una incredibile quantità di gente nel negozio, ed è stata una vera ressa fino alla cassa.

Davanti alla mia spesa la cassiera si è bloccata mettendosi a compilare un modulo.

Inizio a bollire, cercando di non farlo vedere perché comunque quella persona stava lavorando.

Penso al tempo che sto perdendo, alle cose che ho da fare dopo, a com'è disorganizzato questo modo di lavorare, che con tutta la fila ti metti a compilare i moduli proprio ora...

Ad un certo punto mi viene in mente un pensiero, la classica vocina: stai perdendo qualcosa di importante, ma non il tuo tempo. Stai perdendo l'occasione di amare.

An alternative science project

Children across the country and around the world learn the Gospel-based Art of Loving through the Cube of Love program Teresa, an eight-year-old child from Porto Alegre, Brazil, was preparing to take part in a school science exhibit. She was asked to choose from subjects like pollution, alcoholism or the environment, but she was not happy with any of them. So together with her classmate Valentina, they asked the teacher if they could choose a subject that portrayed positive values: the Art of Loving as a response to those problems.

The Art of Loving is a life choice based on the Gospel and launched by Chiara Lubich. Some of its principles are: “Love everyone,” “Love the other as yourself” and “Be the first to love.” “This is the only way to make humanity one family,” said Chiara Lubich.

Scultore e studioso di belle arti, Sami Creta, egiziano, è al I anno del corso di Laurea magistrale di Fondamenti e prospettive di una cultura dell’unità. A 25 anni, Sami ha preso parte ad uno degli eventi più importanti degli ultimi anni: la “primavera araba”. Poco prima di venire in Italia per proseguire il suo percorso di studio, l’artista è sceso in piazza assieme a migliaia di giovani che protestavano ad Alessandria contro il regime di Hosni Mubarak. In un'intervista, Sami tratteggia la sua esperienza e la ragione per cui è venuto a Sophia, a pochi mesi dalla cruciale svolta politica nel suo Paese.

Cosa ti ha spinto a venire a Sophia?

L’esigenza di aprire il mio campo di studi per riuscire a capire alcune cose in modo più ampio, soprattutto dopo le recenti vicende politiche del mio Paese. Vedo che sono possibili tante interpretazioni di quella rivoluzione; c'è una prospettiva sociologica, politica o addirittura filosofica. Dato che Sophia è uno spazio interdisciplinare, ho intravisto qui la possibilità di trovare uno sguardo diverso e arricchente.

Tu hai vissuto in prima persona la primavera araba...

Sì, ho partecipato alle manifestazioni per vari mese, dal gennaio del 2011 fino a poco prima di venire in Italia. All’inizio le proteste erano più calde. Mi ricordo i giovani che sono scesi in piazza il 25 gennaio del 2011. Era una iniziativa pacifica contro la mancanza di cibo, di lavoro... c'erano motivi sociali. Tre giorni dopo ci siamo resi conto che la polizia usava la violenza contro i manifestanti, che venivano chiusi i mezzi di comunicazione, Internet e forse è questo che ha scatenata una vera e propria rivoluzione contro il regime. Era difficile seguire tutto quanto accadeva giorno dopo giorno, ma era evidente che c'era un grande risveglio da parte di tutta la popolazione. Da lì in avanti c'ero anch'io, fino alla fine del governo di Mubarak.

Celebrating St. Nicholas feast with homeless persons

We “Youth for a United World” (Y4UW) in Warsaw took advantage of the Christmas season “to look around us” and search for those people who are suffering. We thought of dedicating our attention to the homeless persons who live in solitude.

Since it is customary here in Poland to give gifts to one another on St. Nicholas day (6^th December), we thought of celebrating this feast in a different way. Instead of staying among ourselves and giving gifts to one another, we decided to prepare Christmas gifts for some homeless people. These gifts consisted of sweets, sandwiches and fruit. We went along together with our friends living in the student hostel in Warsaw. We split up in to groups of 3 to 4 persons and we distributed the 120 gifts that we had prepared. Our meeting with homeless people at train stations or simply on the road was a touching experience for each one of us and their smiles warmed our hearts.

Later on, in the evening we all got together to share our joy of having loved these persons. It is really wonderful to see what a simple act of love can bring about!

Macau: Genfest Fundraising activity

We invited our friends to come for a “Hot-Pot” dinner wherein the raw food was placed in a hot pot and after letting it boil for some time the food is ready to eat.
The 20 guests invited were very satisfied with the food, and some of them would like to go for the Genfest.
Although in some instances we encountered some difficulties, however, at the end we were able to overcome them through our mutual love. We were all aware that we are doing this activity for God and for His glory.
As a sign of gratitude towards the financial support offered by the guests, we prepared a hand fan with a greeting: “Wishing you a prosperous Chinese New Year!”

Tombolata: Mettiamoci in gioco IIIª Edizione

Approfittando delle imminenti festività natalizie ci siamo lanciati subito nell’organizzazione di una tombolata. Questo è un appuntamento che, come GMU avremmo ripetuto per il terzo anno. Questa volta, però, è stata un’esperienza diversa. Quest’anno, infatti, è stata organizzata una con tutta la Comunità di Sant’Anastasia.

La preparazione è stata davvero formativa per ciascuno di noi. Non è stato sempre semplice perdere le nostre idee, le certezze che in questi anni si erano stratificate. Ma, pian piano, sia noi giovani, che la realtà adulta, ha perso le proprie idee per lasciar posto ad un’idea condivisa fra tutti. E abbiamo realizzato una serata fantastica!

Change of heart

Ever since my sister left for college, I have been the one responsible for doing everything in the house, such as cleaning, cooking and washing dishes.

One day, I came home from school and there was a pile of dishes to wash, and I had a lot of homework to do. So, I said I wasn’t going to do this every day because I have my own schoolwork to do.

Then, I thought to myself, “Mom and Dad and my older sister are all at work, and they come home late and I come really early.”

So I thought of what Jesus would do if he were in my place.

I had the answer: I washed the dishes, cleaned and cooked as my mom taught me, and I had lots of time to study.

My parents came and they were really happy with what I had done, and I was happy. I said, “Thank you, Jesus.”

Taking time to love

My exam schedule no longer seemed so daunting

Once a week, I volunteer at a nursing home. It has become not just an extracurricular activity, but a commitment I have grown to love and enjoy. 

This particular visit took place a few days before the start of my exams. I had five exams in five days, and I knew that time management would be vital to succeeding. However, even though my schoolwork is very important to me, balancing my other commitments is just as important. 

On my way into the nursing home, I happened to pass by the room of a lady I knew, and her door was open.  Without hesitation, I greeted her. She welcomed me into her room and started sharing her experiences and her photo album.

After ten minutes, I realized it was time for Mass there. I usually bring the seniors down from their rooms to the chapel for Mass. I had noticed that on several occasions this lady had left in the middle, looking very confused and out of place. Recently I noticed that she does not go to Mass anymore. I told her that I would return after Mass.

Festeggiando il capodanno con giovani di tutto il mondo

L’idea di organizzare una festa di inizio anno è nata dal desiderio di trascorrere con i nostri amici una serata speciale, ma permettere a ciascuno di viverla in un clima “speciale”. E’, ormai, il terzo anno consecutivo di questo appuntamento. Ciascuno di noi ha i propri compiti assegnati: chi si occupa di organizzare il guardaroba, chi il bar, chi di preparare la sala, chi con la scusa del parcheggio fa accoglienza…  è sempre bellissimo vedere come ciascuno è pronto ad aiutare l’altro, a sostituirlo; come con un solo sguardo si risolvono i problemi organizzativi che sempre vengono fuori.

Quest’anno abbiamo avuto davvero tanti piccoli-grandi inconvenienti. Eppure, grazie all’amore fra noi e delle persone che ci hanno conosciuto in questi anni, abbiamo fatto di ogni ostacolo un trampolino di lancio. Alcuni esempi: avevamo mandato in stampa gli inviti. Purtroppo, alla consegna, ci accorgiamo essere stati stampati e tagliati in maniera errata. Eravamo già in ritardo e avremmo dovuto tornare nuovamente a Salerno (che si trovava in un’altra provincia della regione, a diversi chilometri del nostro paese). Abbiamo subito chiamato chi ci aveva stampato i biglietti. Anche se non era assolutamente scontato, si è messa subito in moto una macchina d’amore che, in meno di 48 ore, ci ha permesso di avere i biglietti corretti direttamente a casa! Ancora: il giorno prima della festa, ci viene comunicato che non abbiamo più disponibile l’impianto audio e le luci… davvero una prova incredibile… ci siamo detti: andiamo in un negozio a cui, negli anni passati, ci eravamo rivolti e avevamo raccontato la nostra esperienza, e fidiamoci. All’arrivo, e ascoltata la nostra richiesta, ovviamente i dipendenti si rifiutano di concederci l’affitto dell’impianto, visto i tempi ristretti.

Genfest programme: a brief outline

The Genfest will begin on Friday afternoon, 31^st August, with an Expo on the deck area of  Budapest Sports’ Arena, displaying the life and activities of the Youth for a United World.

That evening, after a welcome session by the Hungarian people and the authorities, there will be a “worldwide” Concert, in which the musicians will be youth from all over the world.

On Saturday, 1^st September, the programme in the hall will switch from music to choreographies and from testimonies to sharing among the participants. The metaphor of constructing a bridge will be used as a symbol in building true and authentic relationships. At the end of the programme, a Project will be proposed to the United Nations to constitute a permanent Observatory office on universal brotherhood among nations. Through a signature campaign, an appeal will be forwarded in order to achieve precise objectives.

Miracolo a Le Havre [Le Havre - 2011 - 93 min.]

I protagonisti sono una coppia modesta, che sopravvive in un quartiere della periferia di Le Havre, grande porto del nord della Francia. Marcel ha lasciato la letteratura per fare il lustrascarpe - per essere più vicino alla gente - almeno dice lui. Sua moglie Arletty è una donna immigrata che, con grande dignità, tiene la casa e gestisce le poche entrate. Il quartiere sembra fatto per questa coppia stile anni '60, con drogheria, fruttivendolo e "bistrot" che fanno volentieri credito (la solidarietà del quartiere è uno dei tanti valori del film). Tutto sembra funzionare bene fin quando, su un registro più contemporaneo, Idrissa fugge da un container di immigrati clandestini ed è ricercato dalla polizia. Marcel si imbatte nel giovane gabonese e decide di aiutarlo. Dalla routine e la modestia del lustrascarpe, l'uomo si trasforma allora pian piano in un'altra persona. La solidarietà diventa il filo conduttore del racconto, con tutta la fantasia che la vera generosità può "sbrigliare".
Miracolo a Le Havre - come parecchi film usciti nella stessa stagione - ci trasmette fede nell'umanità, generosità, energia per affrontare la vita. E il tutto senza illusioni o sentimentalismi.
Il film si presta a un dibattito sull'immigrazione, ma soprattutto a come mettere in moto quella generosità che è nascosta in ciascuno di noi. Dai 14 anni in su.

Florence: “Could this happen again?”

The Gen Verde is preparing a tour of Spain, and in the meantime they participate at an event with thousands of youths, on the Day of Remembrance.

“Together with personalities from the world of politics and culture, we were 9000, glued to our seats –so wrote the Gen Verde at the conclusion of the event - in front of holocaust images of World War II concentration camps. This event took place on 26^th January in Florence, at the Nelson Mandela Forum. From the bare stage, testimonies were given by persons who survived the Shoah.” They were open wounds that remind us of today’s victims of genocide, violence, and discrimination.

700 giovani colgono la sfida di cambiare il mondoa attorno, pronti a sporcarsi le mani per costruire il mondo unito

Il segreto per essere realizzati, protagonisti del presente, costruttori del futuro. Da tutto il Paese 700 giovani per una giornata all’insegna della Parola vissuta.

Vuoi sapere cosa fa la differenza nella vita? Fondarla sulla Parola vissuta. Questa potrebbe essere la sintesi di un appuntamento nazionale che ha visto convergere 700 giovani, tanti giovanissimi, da ogni angolo del Portogallo al Centro Comunitario Sra Da Boa Nova, un auditorium di recente costruzione situato a Estoril, pochi chilometri fuori Lisbona.

Il giorno prima erano arrivati anche dalle lontane Isole Azzorre e da Madeira. Quelli che scendono dai pullman provenienti dal nord del Paese tradiscono una faccia assonnata, visto il viaggio di 4-5 ore e quindi la levataccia fatta per non mancare all’appuntamento, ma quando alle 11 si aprono le porte dell’auditorium esplode la vivacità tipica di questa terra: la sala è subito compatta, attenta, partecipe. Tutti sono “sincronizzati”, come dice la canzone d’apertura.

Who are the Youth for a United World (Y4UW)?

We Youth for a United World (Y4UW) are young people like everyone else with a deep rooted belief: "We believe it is possible to build a better world, in solidarity, where the identity of each human person is respected. We want to use every available means to foster unity, among generations; between groups and movements; among Christians of different denominations; between believers of different religions and persons who have no religious belief. We want to tear down the barriers that divide ethnic groups, races, peoples, cultures and social classes to reach universal brotherhood."

From time to time, we come together from all corners of the world to share our experiences and thus build a stronger unity among us. On these occasions we invite our friends, relatives, friends of our friends, university and work colleagues in order to share our joy with them. Our next upcoming event is called the Genfest and here is some information:

What is the Genfest?

The Genfest is a meeting of thousands of young people from all over the world, born from a prophetic intuition of Chiara Lubich, founder of the Focolare Movement. It is an opportunity to share and encounter. It is an invitation to get moving, in the certain knowledge that we are all creators of both our own history and that of history in general. This is why each of us can contribute to breaking down the barriers of indifference, prejudice and selfishness.

Trattare il lavoro come un servizio

Fra un mese dovrei andare per un contratto a tempo indeterminato nell’azienda ospedaliero-universitaria.
Quindi sto cercando di passare ai colleghi le “consegne”. Alcune cose che faccio al lavoro sono un servizio diretto alle persone e all’ospedale. Sono cose che contribuiscono a farlo funzionare meglio e sento l’importanza di assicurare che queste attività continuino senza interruzione.

Mi accorgo che il vangelo mi aiuta a vivere il lavoro come un servizio e vedere le cose con gli occhi degli altri, pensare a chi rimane, e a come lasciare tutto in ordine.

Ieri cercavo di fare questo in una riunione con alcuni dirigenti che ho coordinato quest’anno per il controllo delle infezioni in ospedale.

E’ venuto fuori che fino a quel momento avevo svolto direttamente un’attività che non è mia competenza diretta, ma che nessuno sapeva e voleva fare.

Adesso la persona che avrebbe dovuto fare già da prima queste cose è stata chiamata a prenderle in carico, ed ha cominciato a tirare fuori un bel po’ di problematiche che, obiettivamente, suonano come scuse.
