BURKINA FASO: Flash News sul “United World Project”

“Sono Richard Atemnkeng, Paul Kisyaba e Dominique Djiré.
Due settimane fa abbiamo lanciato “United World Project” ai giovani. Abbiamo organizzato una festa invitando i nostri amici. Sono venuti 80 in tutto e 50 erano nuovi. Dopo un’accoglienza calorosa, abbiamo presentato il “United World Project” e siamo rimasti molto contenti da come hanno ben accolto il progetto. Si sono subito sentiti coinvolti. Infatti, hanno subito chiesto: “quando vi trovate per l’incontro?”; “possiamo venire anche noi?”; “volete venire a parlare ai nostri giovani in scuola?”
Così, abbiamo raccolto 80 firme per il “United World Project”. Ognuno è partito con il desiderio di potare la buona notizie ai loro amici nelle scuole. Già oggi abbiamo sentito da uno di loro, che in qualche scuola hanno chiesto il permesso dal preside della scuola e hanno parlato del “United World Project”! In uno delle scuole 150 giovani hanno subito dato le loro firme. Aspettiamo ancora le notizie dagli altri scuole.
Il 24 novembre ci siamo dato l’appuntamento di andare in un ospedale dello Stato per fare le pulizie, un atto concreto che dimostra concretamente la nostra adesione al “United World Project”. Vi faremmo arrivare le notizie.
Nel mese di dicembre, abbiamo programmato di andare con gli adulti per fare una festa per i prigionieri.”

"War is a useless massacre"

“War is a useless massacre” once said Igino Giordani (Foco), Italian politician, writer and journalist, born September 24, 1894 at Tivoli, died at Rocca di Papa on April 18, 1980.
We presume you would appreciate seeing the Statement by Dr. Ron Kronish, the Secretary General of the Inter-religious Coordinating Council in Israel, on the recent violent conflict between Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza. This clear short statement points in the right direction.  
We remain in solidarity with all sincere religious believers in Palestine and Israel who yearn for a genuine and just peace.

“Dear friends,
As the war in the South of Israel and in Gaza rages, we are anxiously hoping that a ceasefire will be announced today or tomorrow, before more lives are lost on both sides and even more physical and psychological trauma sets in, causing further damage to both the Palestinian and the Israeli peoples. The sooner the violence stops the better - we need to return to dialogue and negotiation rather than use war as a form of conflict resolution.
We believe that the use of force cannot resolve our conflict. Negotiations for peace are the only way to bring about sustainable security for all peoples in the region.
In the meantime, we continue our peace-building work on the ground in Israel, bringing Jews, Christians and Muslims together in ongoing dialogue and educational programs for youth, women, religious leaders, and educators.  In the end, peace will ensure us more security than ongoing war and recurring violence.

Cuba: è nella "notte" che si vedono le "stelle"

Erano tempi di guerra e tutto crollava...  questa frase di Chiara Lubich ha accompagnato arditamente l’alba del 25 ottobre. La notte era stata di incertezze e paure, in mezzo alla penombra, i venti, l’acqua ed i rumori di quanto cadeva; nella mia casa non è crollato il tetto e non avevamo idea del dramma che allo stesso tempo stavano vivendo migliaia, centinaia di migliaia di famiglie nella città di Santiago di Cuba e in molti dei suoi villaggi più vicini.
Soltanto quando è incominciato ad albaggiare il giorno e a diminuire la pioggia e il vento, abbiamo affrontato la realtà; abbiamo visto prima di tutto i luoghi più vicini del vecinato o il lavoro, poi in tutta la città la furia con la quale il vento ci aveva spogliato della vita, tetti, case, edifici publici, templi, dell’ombra ed il verde degli alberi; la furia con la quale il vento della notte aveva messo in evidenza la precarietà e vulnerabilità di tanti.
Quanto lavoro e sforzo, quanto luoghi di materiale che Sandy ha portato via con sè, mi dicevo. Di quello non c’è immagine che si possa prendere e plasmare: nessuna si avvicina alla realtà. Alcuni piangono, altri sistemano; ci sono chi aiutano, altri si approfittano e cercano di lucrare con la perdita altrui; ci sono chi da una mano per pulire, raccattare, mettere a posto, altri rimangono nel lamento inutile o nell’attesa che altri facciano quello che tocca a loro.

Una striscia di esplosivo

Nuova crisi a Gaza: molteplici ne sono le ragioni, molteplici possono esserne le conseguenze, mentre la precarietà impera in tutti i Paesi della regione araba
Ci risiamo: l’annosa tensione tra Hamas e Israele si concentra su quella angusta bandella di terra sul Mediterraneo tristemente conosciuta come Striscia di Gaza. Riprendono contestualmente i bombardamenti a tappeto da parte israeliana – con uccisioni mirate di esponenti di spicco di Hamas, ma anche di tanti innocenti, “effetti collaterali” a cui non possiamo mai abituarci, pena la decadenza del nostro “tasso di umanità” –, così come ai lanci di missili più o meno artigianali dalla Striscia verso il sud d’Israele.
Perché questa recrudescenza? Innanzitutto perché le elezioni anticipate in Israele si avvicinano: certi partiti politici, sostanzialmente quelli al potere ma non solo, hanno tutto l’interesse a ripresentare alla propria opinione pubblica la necessità di combattere efficacemente il nemico pubblico n° 1, cioè Hamas. Un’operazione fattibile solo da chi ha di fatto la forza militare dalla propria parte. L’esercito e i servizi israeliani in questo contesto fanno pesare la loro forza.
C’è poi da considerare la grave incertezza che ormai da due anni attraversa tutti i Paesi arabi della regione, nessuno escluso. Sul Golan le scaramucce tra gli eserciti israeliano e siriano rischiano di degenerare, con l’incognita delle “provocazioni” attuate dai cosiddetti ribelli. In Giordania ed Egitto la “transizione araba” non ha trovato ancora una composizione definitiva, anche per l’inattesa crescita esponenziale dell’influenza dei salafiti nella vita politica e sociale, dopo che i Fratelli musulmani stanno conquistando il potere elettoralmente in diversi Paesi arabi, mentre in altri cresce comunque la loro influenza.

Tutti solidali coi clochard

Il Comune di Milano avvia la raccolta di indumenti pesanti da distribuire ai senza fissa dimora. Dal 2013, inoltre, sarà potenziato e reso gratuito il servizio docce
Coperte di lana, sacchi a pelo, cappotti e giacconi invernali. Il Comune insieme a dodici associazioni attive nel sostegno e nell'accoglienza dei clochard raccoglierà questo materiale con nove gazebo che verranno allestiti nel capoluogo lombardo, sabato prossimo 17 novembre, per poi distribuirlo ai senza tetto in previsione dell’inverno.
A questo proposito sempre il Comune di Milano invita a segnalare le persone in stato di bisogno e a contattare le due strutture comunali che si occupano del soccorso e della prima accoglienza di chi ha bisogno di un posto letto: il Centro aiuto stazione Centrale e la Casa dell'accoglienza (viale Ortles).
Con questa iniziativa dall'assessorato alle Politiche sociali si chiede ai milanesi di dare una mano a chi si trova in difficoltà, donando quello che non si usa più per darlo ai senzatetto e a chi ne avrà bisogno nei mesi invernali che ci aspettano.
Un’altra operazione, denominata "Operazione dignità", sarà attivata prossimamente sempre dal Comune di Milano attraverso l’Assessorato ai servizi sociali. Dalla prossima settimana e per il resto dell’inverno, gli uomini dell’assessorato faranno dei sopralluoghi notturni, e tra loro ci sarà lo stesso assessore Majorino. Perché, spiega quest'ultimo: «Dobbiamo uscire da una logica dell’accoglienza come emergenza e garantire sempre di più standard di qualità. Il diritto alla dignità deve riguardare tutti, anche chi vive per strada».
E in emergenza, appunto, lo scorso anno fu aperto il mezzanino della stazione Centrale: un rifugio per le notti più fredde. «Quest’anno abbiamo aumentato i posti letto fino a 2.500 e vorremmo garantire a tutti un riparo migliore». Si comincerà con il potenziare le docce, attualmente distribuite in tre diversi punti della città. Per utilizzarle, clochard e bisognosi pagano un euro. Dal 2013 saranno gratis e a chi si presenterà, verrà chiesto di compilare una scheda: un modo per cercare di creare un contatto con i servizi sociali. L’obiettivo è anche aumentare l’offerta creando una "rete" con le strutture del terzo settore: da solo, il Comune garantisce 2.500 docce al mese per un massimo di 30mila all’anno; si potrebbe arrivare a 5mila al giorno.

You Taught Me Forgiveness

At her father’s bedside, a Burundese member of the Focolare remembers the deeply Christian lessons he gave to her.
“I lost my Mother, my uncle and his wife at the beginning of the war in 1993. All three of them were murdered by some people from our own quarter, people whom we knew well. Then Father took our orphaned cousins to live with us. There were fourteen of us altogether and Father never showed any partiality towards any one.
In order to keep us together Father decided not to remarry. Being the oldest, I helped him out because the smaller children were feeling their mother’s absence. To my proposals that we seek justice against those who had killed our relatives, Father always helped us to forgive, explaining to us the significance of reconciliation.
He suggested to my brothers that they start a “club”, an association for young people that would promote peace and reconciliation. This club contributed to returning peace to people’s spirits in our Commune.

Emergenza Siria: un appello per i profughi

I profughi siriani sono ormai oltre 300.000. Si sono riversati in Turchia, Iraq, Giordania e Libano. Una situazione drammatica in bilico. Cosa possiamo fare.
Un milione e mezzo di siriani sono sfollati dalle zone più “calde” del Paese
Decidere di lasciare la propria terra, la propria casa, il lavoro, gli amici, è un fatto traumatico, quando non si ha altra scelta. Non si può prevedere se e quando si potrà ritornare e se si troverà ciò che si è lasciato. Un milione e mezzo di siriani sono sfollati dalle zone più “calde” del Paese verso regioni meno pericolose, mentre 311.000 – queste le ultime stime dell’ONU – si sono rifugiati nei Paesi confinanti: Turchia, Iraq, Giordania e Libano.
Non si intravvede ancora una possibile soluzione di questo conflitto che vede schierate su fronti opposti le forze governative e le forze di opposizione; anzi, si teme un’estensione della crisi a livello internazionale.

Cuba, dopo l’uragano Sandy

Prima ancora della costa orientale degli Stati Uniti, è stata colpita l’isola di Cuba con gravi danni. Giovani e ragazzi dei Focolari, insieme a tanti, impegnati negli aiuti.
Dopo il passaggio dell’uragano Sandy nella parte orientale dell’Isola ci scrivono da L’Avana: «La città di Santiago e altri paesi della regione circostante sono stati fortemente colpiti. Si prevedeva una ‘tormenta tropicale’, ma, in pochissime ore, si è convertita in un uragano di categoria 3. Le situazioni più gravi sono dovute alla distruzione delle abitazioni e delle coltivazioni».
Secondo fonti governative, da una prima valutazione risultano 15.392 le case distrutte totalmente, e 36.544 parzialmente, senza contare gli effetti sugli ospedali, scuole, chiese ed altre infrastrutture pubbliche. I danni provocati dall’uragano hanno compromesso una situazione abitativa in tanti casi già precaria.
La situazione è molto difficile: scarseggiano i viveri, i materiali per la ricostruzione. Dopo una settimana comincia a ripristinarsi la corrente elettrica.
La comunità dei Focolari, in particolare i giovani e i ragazzi, sono attivissimi nell’aiutare a sgombrare le strade, ad effettuare piccole riparazioni nei loro quartieri, a preparare le mense per i poveri nelle parrocchie.

USA: Genfest experiences

Letting go of my worry
As a high school senior, I am often stressed by the prospect of what I will do with the rest of my life. The questions of my future eat away at me constantly: what college will I go to? What will I study? What will my career be? These unanswered questions all place a lot of pressure on me.
However, at an international meeting for young people following Genfest, having met so many wonderful happy people who are living various vocations, I came to a profound understanding: no matter what I do, where I go, whatever happens in my life, as long as I live a life of service and love, I will be happy. So whether I work in a construction company, become a priest or own a multibillion-dollar company — if I live the spirituality of unity, it doesn’t matter. At the end of my life, I will be happy with how I’ve lived. And so this has allowed me to let go of my worry and just let God take me where he chooses.

Love knows no barriers
Among these experiences shared at the Genfest, one that was very profound for me was of a young person from Egypt. In the span of six years, he had been through so much suffering — first the death of his mum and then his sister, and shortly afterwards he himself was diagnosed with the same disease. I wanted to go and find him, to tell him “thank you” and that he wouldn’t have to suffer alone, that we would live this together. It was the end of the programme, and everyone was leaving to start the march for the flash mob, so it would have been a miracle to find him. God must have arranged it, however, because two minutes after exiting the stadium I saw him! We started talking and laughing, and he looked at me, and with this big, sincere smile said: “God loves us very much.” It was such a strong moment of God that I don’t have words to describe it. We promised each other that we would pray for one another. It was a lived “Let’s Bridge” experience because we probably will never see each other again, but the connection is there and we will continue to pray for the other.

Napoli: I Giovani per un Mondo Unito "invadono" Scampia

È il 1967: Chiara Lubich, fondatrice del Movimento dei Focolari, si rivolge ai giovani con queste parole “Giovani di tutto il mondo unitevi!”.  Una frase, la sua, che segnerà, nell’anno successivo, l’atto di nascita del Movimento Gen (Generazione nuova): la vecchia generazione lasciava il testimone alla nuova; è l’immagine di una cordata che insieme, ma attraverso esperienze diverse, vuole realizzare il testamento di Gesù, “Che tutti siano uno”.
Nel 1985 sarà il momento dei giovani per un mondo unito: il loro obiettivo è costruire la fraternità universale, attraverso iniziative concrete quali raccolte fondi per progetti di solidarietà e attività di valorizzazione del territorio. In tutto il mondo ci sono tantissimi giovani che vivono per questo ideale, ma hanno l’opportunità di incontrarsi tutti insieme? Chiara aveva pensato a tutto: il Genfest. La prima edizione si tenne nel 1973 a Loppiano (Toscana) con circa 8000 giovani. Soltanto due anni dopo ben 20000 giovani si ritrovarono al PalaEur di Roma alla presenza del papa Paolo VI che li salutò dicendo: «Nasce un mondo nuovo».

Scardinare la xenofobia coltivando la relazione

Cresce in Europa il sentimento di ostilità verso le minoranze. Come arginare questo fenomeno? Le proposte di un centro di ricerca tedesco
Cosa sta alle origini degli atteggiamenti xenofobi? E che si può fare contro la discriminazione? Fin dal 2002 l’università di Bielefeld, nella Renania Vestfalia, ha avviato una ricerca approfondita sul fenomeno della crescita dell’ostilità verso le minoranze che comincia a destare scalpore a livello internazionale. Gli scienziati indagano sui modelli di percezione adottati dalla maggioranza nei confronti delle persone di provenienza sociale, etnica e religiosa diversa. Le analisi empiriche mettono in evidenza alcuni risultati rilevanti: «La discriminazione costituisce un ostacolo decisivo all’integrazione. Chi, però, è costretto a vivere continuamente esperienze di emarginazione, non si sente parte integrante della società».

Egitto: Con i prigionieri eritrei

Questo Servizio è iniziato quando un gruppo di giovani della Chiesa Anglicana ci hanno chiesto di preparare 150 pasti, circa, per i prigionieri egiziani e stranieri. Abbiamo risposto di sì a questa richiesta e durante tutta la notte abbiamo preparato questi pasti per la mattina dopo. Mentre cucinavamo abbiamo saputo che tanti dei prigionieri sono dell’Eritrea.
Lì per lì, siamo rimasti molto colpiti da questo fatto ed abbiamo deciso di visitare i prigionieri con questo gruppo della Chiesa Anglicana. Entrando nella prigione, siamo rimasti molto colpiti da quello che abbiamo visto. È stata un’esperienza fortissima.
Perciò, abbiamo deciso di visitare questi prigionieri eritrei regolarmente. Durante la visita, cerchiamo di capire insieme le loro esigenze e, per quanto possibile, cercare di sodisfare le loro richieste nella visita seguente. In loro abbiamo visto l’ammalato, lo straniero, il bisognoso, il nudo... Abbiamo capito anche il valore della libertà.

USA: Hurricane Sandy Aftermath - “LET’S GIVE!”

The Y4UW from New York wrote us the following email:

“We want to give you some news after the Hurricane Sandy. 
Many states in the east coast were hit and the amount of damage is huge and still difficult to calculate. Communications have been cut off in the areas most affected and only now we are being able to get in touch with many of our people in the communities. They are all well but many still without electricity, phone connections and gasoline. The public transportation is also not fully running which makes it even harder to move around and go to help. We know of two families that lost their houses with all their belongings. The local communities are close to them doing all that they can: cooking meals, giving them a warm place to sleep, pumping out the water, washing clothes, etc.
In these last few days the cities, especially New York are organizing different help initiatives and asking for volunteers. Some of the youth together with the gen are helping now one of our families and are looking into opportunities to collaborate with the city and the Archdioceses in initiatives such as: giving blood, distributing food and clothing, etc.  There is a slogan that our youth start using among them: Let's give!
All this is still at the first stages and we will keep you informed as we receive more news. Meanwhile we count on all your unity and prayers so that this big suffering of our people can be an opportunity to build unity and the united world.”

A feast with Chiara Luce

29th October: commemoration of Chiara Luce. In intense moment for remembering her and seek to follow her example
In Sassello, the town where Chiara Luce was born, from 27th to 28th October a large number of young people met together to celebrate her feast day. The title chosen for the weekend was: ‘I have everything’. In four stages the young people went around the town and listened to many things from people who had witnessed the life of Chiara Luce. They felt as if they were having a truly personal rendezvous with her. Meeting Chiara Luce’s parents, Ruggero and Maria Teresa Badano was a powerful moment. They spoke of many details from Chiara Luce’s life right up to the last period of her life when she began her intense journey towards heaven. Immediately after that there was a time of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, where readings from some things written by Chiara Luce were interspersed between pauses for thought, and then a visit to the cemetery, to ‘get together’ with Chiara Luce in a moment’s intimate conversation. Chiara Luce’s young people, however, with find it easy to go from moments of profound reflection to moments of joyful recreation, all lived with the same intensity and a spirit aiming at the highest values, as was seen at the party at the end of the day run by a young DJ.

Un weekend speciale a "colloquio" con Chiara Luce

A Sassello, il paese natale della Beata Chiara Luce, non è un weekend come gli altri. È qui infatti che il 27-28 ottobre i giovani si sono dati appuntamento, nonostante le previsioni atmosferiche non certo incoraggianti, per festeggiare la Beata ligure. 

Dopo una mattinata di preparativi sotto un cielo grigio e piovoso, quando ormai manca poco all'inizio, uno sguardo all'insù e la sorpresa: è invece un cielo rasserenato quello che accoglie i giovani partecipanti al weekend che apre le celebrazioni in concomitanza con la festa liturgica della Beata Chiara Luce Badano che anche attraverso queste cose sembra voler continuare a "giocare" con noi, quasi a non volerci lasciare adagiare sulle nostre certezze di programma.

 

Parte la musica e la Chiesa della Trinità di Sassello incomincia a riempirsi di giovani, riconoscibili dalle bandane gialle su cui è stampato il titolo scelto per il weekend: "Io ho tutto". 

 

Incomincia così un pomeriggio itinerante "a tu per tu" con Chiara Luce, un percorso a tappe alla scoperta di un'amica che ha vissuto i nostri stessi sogni, le nostre stesse sfide, le nostre gioie e le nostre difficoltà. Una ragazza come noi che ora è Beata, modello per tanti in tutto il mondo. 

 Ci accompagnano in questo percorso quanti hanno incrociato la sua strada durante la sua vita: Daniela, Silvia e Simona, che ci raccontano la Chiara Luce compagna di scuola e amica di tutti i giorni; Franz, che ci aiuta ad entrare nella realtà di quel Dio di cui Chiara Luce si era innamorata, Gesù, nel momento dell’Abbandono; e poi Aldina, che racconta della scelta di Dio, nelle piccole e grandi cose, della giovane sassellese. 

E come ultima tappa uno dei momenti più attesi: l'incontro con Maria Teresa e Ruggero, genitori di Chiara Luce. Cala il silenzio e l'ascolto si fa sempre più attento: attraverso alcune domande riviviamo con loro  l'ultimo tratto della vita di Chiara Luce, il suo "volo" verso il Cielo.

Tutte tappe per tanti dei presenti forse già conosciute, ma che ogni volta parlano al cuore in modo diverso. 

Un momento di profondo raccoglimento

Un lungo applauso che fatica a interrompersi e che ricorda per certi versi quello interminabile dell'Aula Paolo VI nel giorno della Beatificazione. Come allora, è forte l'impressione dietro a questo gesto della volontà dei presenti di prendere dalle loro mani quella fiaccola che tanto Chiara Luce desiderava consegnare proprio ai giovani.

Segue l’adorazione eucaristica intervallata da alcuni stralci degli scritti di Chiara Luce, e poi ci spostiamo silenziosamente verso il cimitero a "trovarla". Il colpo d'occhio è suggestivo: nel cielo il giorno sta lasciando spazio alla notte illuminata dalla luce della luna piena e il buio sembra preservare il momento intenso di dialogo personale di ciascuno con lei, che neanche la pioggia che incomincia a scendere riesce ad interrompere.

Festa per Chiara Luce in Messico

Chiara Luce e l'esempio della sua vita hanno ormai irreversibilmente varcato i confini del mondo. Lo testimoniano la presenza a Sassello di giovani di 33 paesi diversi, ma anche quelli del Messico con cui ci colleghiamo durante la sera, che proprio negli stessi giorni sono insieme per approfondire l’Ideale dell'unità che ha animato la vita e le scelte della beata. 

I giovani di Chiara Luce sono così: passano da momenti di profonda riflessione ad altri di ricreazione con la stessa intensità, con l’anima ‘puntata in alto’, come testimonia la festa animata da un giovane dj della Diocesi di Aqui che chiude la giornata.

Alla S. Messa domenicale sono più di 700 le persone che affollano la chiesa parrocchiale. Don Mirco Crivellari, parroco di Sassello, invita i giovani ad avere il coraggio di togliersi di dosso tutte quelle "coperte" della vita che non permettono una piena fiducia in Dio e di prendere esempio da Chiara Luce, che un giorno aveva incoraggiato la mamma: “fidati di Dio e hai fatto tutto”. E il primo modo per concretizzarlo è un piccolo post-it su cui ognuno lascia il suo pensiero o la sua preghiera alla giovane Beata.

Lo spettacolo Passi di Luce

Nel pomeriggio il piccolo teatro della parrocchia non può contenere tutti i presenti e così lo spettacolo della compagnia teatrale "Passi di Luce" di Castelfiorentino (FI) deve essere rappresentato per due volte di seguito. Ore intense che ci fanno ripercorre ancora una volta la vita della giovane Beata attraverso gli occhi di un gruppo di giovani di Firenze in pellegrinaggio a Sassello.

Nella stanzetta di Chiara Luce con papà Ruggero

Durante tutta la giornata è un continuo via vai verso la casa di Chiara Luce. Papà Ruggero fa gli onori di casa spiegando ogni oggetto, ogni angolo della cameretta dove Chiara Luce ha vissuto gli ultimi due anni, facendo fare ai presenti un’esperienza reale e che non sa di ricordo di qualcosa vissuto 20 e più anni fa.

In un silenzio commovente, un gruppo dopo l’altro entra ed esce da quella stanzetta. Per voce di tanti, "tutto parla ancora di lei, della sua normalità" e la sua presenza si sente più viva che mai.

Maria Teresa racconta ad un gruppo di quando il parroco di allora andando a far visita a Chiara Luce, disse di aver intuito, guardando il volto luminoso della ragazza, come doveva essere stato il volto di Gesù nella trasfigurazione. 

I giovani sono rapiti dalle sue parole e uno di loro rivolgendosi a Maria Teresa le dice: "Io invece, penso di poter dire che ho visto il volto di Chiara Luce nel tuo".

A conclusione del weekend di festeggiamenti, lunedì 29 ottobre, per la ricorrenza liturgica della Beata, è stata celebrata a Sassello la Messa Solenne presieduta dal Vescovo di Acqui Terme, mons. Micchiardi e concelebrata anche da Giancarlo Faletti, co-presidente del Movimento dei Focolari. Per l'occasione sono arrivate in pellegrinaggio da varie parti di Italia tante altre persone che hanno nuovamente riempito la chiesa della Trinità di Sassello.

Sono stati tre giorni davvero speciali, dal sapore di Paradiso.

The courage to speak

‘I am a sales assistant in a clothes shop. It is a job that I like, because it gives me the possibility to build relationships with our customers. One woman, in particular, often comes to the shop and buys clothes for her daughter in Australia. Before purchasing them, she asks me to try them on because she says that I look like her daughter. She shares with me a lot about her, even confidential things.
‘One day I saw her coming, but as I looked at her face, I immediately realized that something was different. She looked sad and exhausted. In fact, she had come to talk to me. She had found out that her daughter in Australia was in a relationship with a man who is much older than her. Both she and her husband wanted their daughter to return home, however, a few days earlier her daughter had phoned them up telling them that she was pregnant and wanted to get an abortion. The woman was confused, angry and full of harsh feelings. All the same, she thought that getting rid of the child was the only possible solution. Basically, she hoped that sooner or later her daughter would come back home.
Up till that moment, I had always tried to fit in with her and what she wanted – after all she was the customer. But in that moment I felt very strongly that I had to say what I really thought. I also wanted to help her in some practical way, and not just sharing her burden. I asked her for her daughter’s phone number. I decided to try calling her up and talk to her. I prayed that I might find the right words. To my surprise she was happy to speak with me! She told me that she wanted to have an abortion but she hoped she would die as well. The sorrow for having incurred so much suffering on her parents was too burdensome especially after all they had done for her. However, amidst all that sorrow, I sensed a tiny light of hope, as well as, a sincere sorrow for having made her parents suffer. Therefore, I spoke to her mother, explaining that her daughter was sorry and wanted to start again.
‘After that I actually met the daughter and her boyfriend. They did not have an abortion, and in fact they wanted to get married so as to give the baby a family. The future grandparents were very grateful for my support.’

Anch’io posso essere santo?

Chi raggiunge il paradiso? Chi è chiamato alla santità? Riusciremo a far germogliare e crescere il “seme divino” che è presente in ognuno di noi? Una riflessione
Dicono che Giovanni Paolo II abbia inflazionato i santi. Pio XII ne aveva proclamati 33, Giovanni XXIII 10, Paolo VI 64, lui addirittura  482, più 1.341 beati! Ne ha fatti troppi? O troppo pochi? Ma quanti sono i santi? Il curato d’Ars usava ripetere: “Nel nostro cimitero riposano molti santi” e chissà quanti altri riposano nei cimiteri di tutto il mondo.
La canonizzazione – l’onore degli altari, come si diceva una volta – raggiunge soltanto poche migliaia di persone, il paradiso, come leggiamo nel libro dell’Apocalisse, lo raggiunge “una moltitudine immensa, che nessuno può contare, di ogni nazione, razza, popolo e lingua”. Per lo più sono persone che hanno vissuto le beatitudini evangeliche con semplicità e spesso nel nascondimento, senza alcuna notorietà.
Alcuni noti, altri meno noti… Noti e ignoti a chi? A noi. Ma chissà come Dio vede le cose. Quando mi trovo in mezzo alle folle, quando viaggio in metro, quando sono in una chiesa gremita, guardo le persone sconosciute e anonime e penso che ognuna di loro non è tale davanti a Dio, ma a lui conosciutissima e da lui amata e pensata; egli ne ha premura. Ci ha voluti uno per uno e gli siamo preziosi e cari come unici. Ognuno di noi – ognuno dei miliardi e miliardi di essere umani che sono passati, che sono e che passeranno – è una parola che il Padre ha pronunciato nel generare il Figlio suo e gli siamo figli: tutti un unico figlio nel suo unico Figlio. È  proprio questa la santità, diventare Gesù.

Cultivating virtues and relationships: the key to happiness

Professor Luigino Bruni visits the United States
On a beautiful autumn week, New York welcomed Dr. Luigino Bruni, to launch his new book ‘The Wound and the Blessing: Economics, Relationships and Happiness’, and to engage in dynamic discussion with scholars at Marist College and Fordham University. On October 17, a bustling mix of 100 students, faculty and community enthusiasts packed the room at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY to hear Bruni discuss the important tenets of his book.  Among the concepts most spotlighted in his talk were that of ‘relational goods’: the idea of our relationships and community bonds as tangible economic ‘goods’ to be measured and considered, much like we do with the production of goods and services. Hence, shared life experiences are of incredible importance for our happiness, argued Bruni. I was struck by the simplicity yet power of this shift in thinking about the creation and consumption of goods, when if done together, can contribute to a state of ‘being happy’; far more sustainable than ‘feeling’ happy.
The audience seemed taken with Bruni’s emphasis on cultivating one’s inner life and virtues to ensure that the intentions underlying our economic decisions always stem from good motivations.  Namely, what matters to our happiness is that pure intrinsic motivations drive our decisions and actions. Dr. Robert Manning, who joined Bruni as a speaker, seemed to agree. Dr. Manning, a well-acclaimed author and expert on consumer finance, presented a compelling argument that we must remain attentive to nurturing ourselves ‘in relation to the whole of society’. It reminds me of the African philosophy of ‘Ubuntu’: ‘I am because of what or who we are’.

L’amore rimane

Sto attraversando un momento buio per la morte di uno zio a cui ero molto legata: era per me come un angelo custode. Mi manca molto e mi domando spesso: dopo la morte finisce tutto? che senso ha allora la vita. Perché ci vengono strappate le  persone a cui vogliamo bene?  Voglio credere che il legame-dialogo tra me e mio zio continui ma come faccio per sentirlo? Ho bisogno di speranza...

Nei momenti di buio verrebbe voglia di chiudersi, ed è bellissimo avere il coraggio di donare anche ciò che ci fa soffrire, di rompere il muro di oscurità. Grazie!

Ricordo quando anni fa è morto fra le mie braccia, per un’emorragia cerebrale,  un mio grandissimo amico, Tony. Ci conoscevamo fin da ragazzi e ci trovavamo a Loppiano facendo lo stesso cammino. Io credevo alla vita eterna, ma la partenza di una persona così vicina ma ha fatto vacillare.  Per mesi nelle lunghe passeggiate sotto le stelle ho cercato una risposta e ho provato a ritrovare sensazioni familiari che non c'erano più...  Ma più forte affiorava in me la convinzione provata nell'attimo in cui Tony non respirava più: è in paradiso! 

Avevamo sempre cercato di vivere tra noi l’essere dono reciproco e anche quel giorno, che non sapevamo sarebbe stato l'ultimo in terra, era così: dare un bicchiere d'acqua, un sorriso, chiamare il dottore...  E’ questo amore che è rimasto più forte della morte e che continua a legarci. Così può essere con tuo zio e con chiunque raggiungerà prima di te il cielo. Se era per te come un angelo, molto più lo potrà essere ora che non è legato allo spazio e potrà esserti sempre vicino. Questo lo sperimento vivissimo con Tony e altri amici lassù: possiamo parlarci sempre e sento il loro aiuto più che mai.  C'è bisogno però di esercitare dei sensi diversi da quelli a cui siamo abituati, gli stessi che ci fanno credere in Dio o in altri valori anche se non li vediamo.  Esercitati a parlare con lo zio... e lo scoprirai vivo più che mai.  E poi, visto che solo l'amore resta, cerca di amare più che puoi chiunque ti sarà accanto.

"A united world on the lips of everyone"

A permanent worldwide monitoring body that has fraternity as its focus. Youth for a United World working in all fields to build a world that is one
Launched during the Genfest in Budapest at the end of this summer, the object of the United World Project is ambitious: taking up the task that Chiara Lubich entrusted to the Youth for a United World (Y4UW), it seeks to promote a culture of universal brotherhood, so that ‘a united world will be on the lips of everyone’, as Chiara put it.
Subdivided into three parts (United World Watch, United World Workshop and United World Network), the project aims at involving the largest number of people possible, asking them to be personally committed to living in fraternity, to the point of involving even large international organizations.
United World Watch is setting up a permanent international monitoring body for universal fraternity. To this end Y4UW is striving to develop the widest possible range of ‘fragments of fraternity’ initiatives throughout the world, studying the principle of universal fraternity in all its forms through research and forums, collecting data on and monitoring fraternal actions by individuals, groups and peoples.
United World Workshop is a way for young people to commit themselves to practical action following up on what UNESCO calls good practice. Through a multitude of activities all over the planet they are committed to working concretely for universal fraternity. Furthermore, by means of the NGO New Humanity, they have asked the UN to give international recognition to ‘United World Week’ promoted by them in many countries since 1996.
United World Network recognizes that to build a united world it is not enough to involve international institutions. By means of an online petition (aiming to have 500,000 signatures to give the UN by May 2013) Y4UW propose to young people, adults and children to take up the commitment of to live out the Golden Rule: ‘Treat others as you would have them treat you’ and to contribute to United World Watch, being constantly on the lookout for signs of fraternity that call the world to unity.

A key moment for the project will be in May 2013 in Jerusalem when, a year on from the Genfest, signing up to the ‘Network’ will concluded and, with world participation, the ‘Watch’ will be launched officially.
The project shows particular concern for the theme of fraternity in that sensitive situation which is the Middle East. But it will also contain ‘Sharing with Africa’, a proposal of mutual exchange from the African Y4UW to all humanity, to rediscover the traditional ideal of Ubuntu (“I am because we are” the vision of unity at the basis of African societies).
In this way the United World Project becomes the container for many of the activities of Y4UW.

Un osservatorio mondiale permanente che ha come focus la fraternità

I Giovani per un Mondo Unito al lavoro con attività di ogni genere per la costruzione di un mondo unito
Lanciato durante il Genfest di Budapest alla fine di questa estate, l’obiettivo che lo United World Project (UWP) si pone è ambizioso: riprendendo il compito che Chiara Lubich ha affidato ai Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU), intende promuovere la cultura della fraternità universale, affinché “il mondo unito sia sulla bocca di tutti”, come lei diceva.
Suddiviso in tre parti (United World Watch, United World Workshop e United World Network), il progetto mira a coinvolgere più persone possibili, chiedendo d’impegnarsi in prima persona a vivere per la fraternità, fino a coinvolgere anche i grandi organismi internazionali.
United World Watch. E cioè, dare vita ad un Osservatorio internazionale e permanente sulla fraternità universale. Per questo, i GMU si impegnano a sviluppare con le iniziative più varie “frammenti di fraternità” in tutto il mondo, ad approfondire il principio della fraternità universale nelle sue varie declinazioni mediante studi e forum e a raccogliere e monitorare azioni fraterne di singoli, gruppi e popoli.
United World Workshop. I giovani si impegnano inoltre a dar seguito all’attuazione di quelle che l’UNESCO chiama “buone pratiche”: attraverso le molteplici attività che li vede impegnati in tutto il pianeta proseguiranno a lavorare concretamente alla realizzazione della fraternità universale. Inoltre, attraverso l’ONG New Humanity, propongono alle Nazione Unite il riconoscimento a livello internazionale della “Settimana Mondo Unito” che promuovono in tanti paesi dal 1996.
United World Network. Per arrivare al mondo unito, non basta il coinvolgimento delle istituzioni internazionali. Attraverso una raccolta di firme (obiettivo, consegnare all’ONU 500.000 firme entro maggio 2013) i GMU propongono a giovani, adulti e ragazzi, d’impegnarsi a vivere la regola d’oro “fai agli altri quello che vorresti fosse fatto a te” e a contribuire al “Watch”, rimanendo “sentinelle” attente ai “segni di fraternità” che chiamano il mondo all’unità.

Momento centrale del progetto sarà nel maggio 2013 a Gerusalemme quando, a conclusione dell’anno del Genfest, si chiuderà la raccolta di adesioni al “Network” e si lancerà ufficialmente il “Watch”, l’Osservatorio, in collegamento con tutto il mondo.
Il progetto mostra una grande attenzione al tema della fraternità in quel “delicato cantiere” che è attualmente il Medio Oriente; ma in esso si inserisce anche “Sharing with Africa”, una proposta di reciprocità rivolta dai GMU africani a tutta l’umanità per riscoprire ed attuare l’ideale tradizionale dell’Ubuntu  (“io sono perché noi siamo” - la visione di unità alla base delle società africane).
United World Project diventerà così un grande contenitore dove confluiranno tante attività dei Giovani per un Mondo Unito.

Lebanon: 2,200 youth raise E. 25,000 for bomb-damaged apartments' victims

Yesterday the Concert was really great, we witnessed that peace could be built even though we are surrounded by so many tensions.
We were about 2,200 youth!
The host of the concert host was a Youth for a United World (Y4UW). He presented to everyone who are the Y4UW and what is our goal.
A white bracelet was distributed to everyone, just like the orange one we received during the Genfest. A knot was tied in the middle of the string as a sign of unity and commitment to building peace. Everyone agreed on that by shouting the word “unity”. Some youth have also signed the “United World Project” petition.
It was an open air concert and we received a lot of unexpected help! For example, the sound system was for free, a restaurant offered us sandwiches to sell to the young participants, a juice company offered us 500 juice bottles for free, and many people gave us donations...
In all, we were able to raise 25,000€ and with this money we will help in restructuring of the bomb-damaged apartments. We are organizing the restoration with a Lebanese NGO which has a long experience in this field. In 2006, we had already worked with this same NGO in rebuilding some houses in Southern Lebanon following the war that took place during that period.
Many Youth for a United World are so enthusiastic to continue what we stared in the concert.

Lebanon: A true comittment to peace building

Last Friday (19 October 2012) a bomb exploded in Beirut, a police General was assassinated  and about 40 appartments were destroyed ... Many people are homeless and their houses need to be rebuilt.
Jack, a Youth for a United World who was in the "Genfest 2012 - Let's bridge," had an idea of making a fundraising concert to help the people who have lost their houses.
The idea began in a "what's up" conversation and then it began to evolve. Jack is also president of the Music Club in his university; after chatting with some Youth for a United World and other friends from the Music club, they came up with this decision.

"The concert is really a huge one. More than 2,000 youth confirmed their participation to the concert via facebook. Each day we are going on TV to talk about the concert , too many radios are asking for interviews, many journals wrote about it. We are organising this event in a collaboration of other Lebanese NGOs.
We feel it is something very big, bigger than what we can handle but we are counting on Someone to whom everything is possible. In fact, the concert itself is a sort of miracle because right now there are too many political divisions in Lebanon and these divisions seem to got even bigger after the explosion. Many youth are disappointed with what the politicians are saying on the media.
Therefore, this concert aims at giving light in this moment of darkness. It is a message of hope, of peace and of unity among the Lebanese. With this concert, we want to witness that our ideal of a United World is possible and we want to show that Lebanese Youth can be united...
The dress code will be white as a sign of peace, we'll distribute a white wrist just like the ones distributed during the Genfest as a sign of comittment to peace building .
Too many Youth for a United World are so enthusiastic for the concert, we feel that what started in the Genfest is continuing after it.

Tre giorni di festa a Sassello per Chiara

Ormai da due anni, dalla beatificazione della giovane Chiara Luce Badano, il 29 ottobre, a Sassello – in provincia di Savona, ma nella vicina Diocesi di Acqui Terme – si celebra la sua festa liturgica. Anche quest’anno la chiesa della Santissima Trinità di Sassello vedrà riuniti tanti pellegrini per la Santa Messa delle ore 16 celebrata dal vescovo di Acqui Pier Giorgio Micchiardi. Quest’anno però ci sarà qualcosa di più: per iniziativa del giovane parroco don Mirco Crivellari, Sassello si prepara a interrompere la sua consueta quiete per accogliere giovani di tutta Italia per un weekend di “festa” in concomitanza di tale ricorrenza, una sorta di triduo di preparazione, concepito però nello stile di Chiara.
Un gruppo di giovani della diocesi di Acqui e del Movimento dei Focolari sta lavorando per costruire “Io ho tutto”, un programma che sperano possa portare a Sassello tanti ragazzi e giovani desiderosi di un incontro “a tu per tu” con Chiara Luce. Una due giorni che li vedrà coinvolti in un variegato programma accompagnati dai testimoni e dai genitori della beata, Maria Teresa e Ruggero Badano. Sarà presente anche la compagnia teatrale Passi di Luce, di Firenze, che presenterà nella cittadina ligure l’omonimo spettacolo.

The Work that Saves

There are 25 million unemployed in Europe, a number that is destined to grow in all probability in the next few years, unless something unexpected happens which is as yet undreamed. We should stop and reflect more on these flesh and blood numbers which can tell us many things and which could propel us into action to change things for the better. By not stopping on the surface of the phenomenon and getting to the bottom of these numbers, we would realize soon enough that the principal cost of an economic crisis is always the human one, especially in a deep, epochal one as is happening today. But the principle obstacle we meet with, is the lack of budgeting indexes or a currency able to measure it, to compensate for it, or often, even to see it. It doesn’t enter in the GDP, but it could be partially revealed only by observing real lives of people and the world of work.
The main components of this human cost, invisible but real, are two, both of which increase in times of crisis: Unemployment in the strictest sense, and the suffering born of having to do the wrong jobs in order to survive. About the first component, that is, unemployment costs, we know enough, but we don’t know everything and we don’t say everything: for example, the damage done in having an increasing number of young people out of work is hardly mentioned.  When this happens, it’s the young people who lose the most for lack of income, and for not being able to invest during their best and most creative years; but the business world also loses much because, in lacking young people among its work force, it cannot truly innovate, it doesn’t have enough enthusiasm, gratuity, need of future and hope.

Facebook, il “continente” dei giovani

Sono un miliardo gli utenti che nel mondo si collegano al social network inventato da Mark Zuckerberg: una sorta di grande continente “abitato” soprattutto da ventenni.
“Segno di una ricerca autentica di incontro personale con l’altro...”
Il 14 settembre scorso Facebook ha raggiunto quota un miliardo di utenti, che si collegano almeno una volta al mese. S’impone una nuova geografia: nel mappamondo virtuale costituito da Internet – che vive ormai strettamente interconnesso al mappamondo fisico – Facebook assume le dimensioni d’un vero e proprio continente.
Anzi, per numero d’abitanti sarebbe il secondo continente al mondo, secondo solo all’Asia. Un continente giovane, con l’età media sui 22 anni. E un continente in grande espansione. Nell’America del Nord quasi la metà della popolazione ha un profilo Facebook, l’Oceania sta a ruota, poi segue il Sud America, quindi l’Europa con circa il 30 per cento degli abitanti, Asia e Africa sono i fanalini di coda.
L’Italia è all’undicesimo posto della classifica delle nazioni col maggior numero di utenti (con quasi 22 milioni e mezzo di “amici”), al primo posto gli Usa. L’ideatore di Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, ha 28 anni, e un patrimonio stimato di più di 10 miliardi di dollari. Sul suo Facebook si fa di tutto: ci si scambia idee su come coltivare i pomodori, si fa politica, ci si fidanza e ci si separa, si fanno rivoluzioni, perché grande è stato il ruolo dei social network nella Primavera araba.

Cagliari: Note di Luce

Un ricco nel Regno dei cieli? Difficile, ma non impossibile

"I francescani non erano nemici della ricchezza in sé, erano anzi alleati dei mercanti. Credevano infatti che la ricchezza che viene fatta circolare, che diventa ricchezza produttiva, è un mezzo per combattere la povertà non-scelta". Luigino Bruni, ecomomista docente all'università di Milano-Bicocca, torna sulle parole di Benedetto XVI all'Angelus di domenica 14 ottobre. Il Papa, commentando il vangelo di Marco, ha ricordato che è difficile, ma non impossibile, per un ricco entrare nel Regno dei cieli e che molti nella Storia della Chiesa hanno usato i propri beni in modo evangelico.

"Senza una ricchezza 'condivisa' e usata 'produttivamente' per creare opportunità per gli altri - spiega Bruni - non si esce da nessuna forma di indigenza. Come i francescani anche noi dobbiamo condannare la ricchezza bloccata, rinchiusa nei forzieri, rispetto a quella che circola e crea produttività".
"Resta valida però - aggiunge Bruni - l'affermazione di Gesù che se il ricco non trova queste forme di condivisione e non fa dei suoi beni dei 'ponti', difficilmente entra nel Regno dei Cieli. La prima forma di 'povertà' del ricco che non sa condividere è l'incapacità di vedere l'importanza del Regno di Dio. Ma se la vede, si accorge che c'è un uso più bello dei beni quando vengono condivisi". "Le parole del Papa - conclude l'economista - sono di grande attualità: perché oggi, per superare la crisi, bisogna promuovere la ricchezza 'sociale', rimettere al centro della produzione il lavoro, tassare le rendite e non l'impresa. Solo così possiamo aiutare chi è povero".

Everything will never go back to normal

My name is Anjelo Noah Ordono.

Everything will never go back to normal, as what I keep telling myself few days before going back to Manila from Genfest and Y4UW Forum. Indeed, I am so much thankful for being part of the Focolare world now and I can feel that my life has changed pertaining to my new attitude, new outlook and new perspectives. I've become more aggressive on thinking, planning and doing things that are meaningful to the people around me, from starting to wash plates to help my mom ease her tasks up to the extent of giving much more contribution to community-based projects on my current job. Who I was on the day we left for Hungary and Italy is far different now from who I am today. Anyhow, I made a chart upon arriving on what I want to do with my life for the next 4 months.

Precisely, I will commit myself further to the Focolare world as much as God wants me to do so, because in here I believe my life and existence will be more meaningful especially that the people here have the same perspectives, so I want to live with them. 72 hours without compromise

What’s the core idea behind “72 hours without compromise”?
The scope of this activity is to bring young people together in groups of 15 to 30 to perform charity work during a period of 72 hours.
At the beginning of the action, the participants will be divided into groups and given the task which they have to fulfil. The task will be a surprise for most of them (the participants can develop their own projects too). These tasks can imply social and ecological issues such as: renovating social services, organizing an interreligious festivity in a parish, performing a theatre play together with inhabitants of an old-people’s home, taking part in ecological actions such as forest cleaning, liquidate garbage heaps etc.
The aim of the action is to get to know the life environment of other groups of people on the margins of society. Prejudices can be eliminated by living and working together and by raising attention to their societal problems, participants can be motivated to contribute to a more inclusive society.
Another aim is to evoke young people’s sensitivity for social problems and demonstrate to them, that acting in solidarity does change people’s lives. The participants can learn not to close their eyes to social problems and thus become active citizens, participating in society up to a political level.
