The young people in Boston want to show the world that fear is not the answer. A walk to ‘finish’ the marathon on Friday 19th April will be a sign of hope.

Joanna: “I was so anxious
to know if my friends
were ok.”

Two days after the bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, the city remains traumatized, partly paralyzed. The inhabitants, though shaken and shattered by the violence, want to stand up against the sense of fear: “We’re the ones todecide when to finish the marathon,” says Joanna, a 19 year-old college student in Boston. An event has been organized for Friday evening – to walk the last five miles of the marathon, which is where the police forced them to stop. The walk will be a sign of hope to show the world that there’s more good than bad in the city of Boston.

Joanna was cheering for several friends who were running in the marathon; she was standing about five miles away from the finish line. “All of a sudden, there was chaos; there were cops everywhere telling the people that the race was over.” Joanna was scared; nobody knew what happened, more-so because the cell phones were not working. There was talk that there had been two explosions, then she overheard two policemen speaking about a bomb attack. “I started to realize that my friends were right there in the middle of it all, and I was so anxious to know if they were ok”. Feeling helpless, Joanna took refuge in a cafe’ when one of her friends who had participated in the marathon walked in the door. “I bought him something to eat; I listened to him”. By doing these simple acts of love, Joanna realized that we can’t remain paralyzed with fear.

She found out that all her friends were fine, though one girl was very close to the bombings. “Unfortunately, a lot of families and other students cannot say the same,” says Joanna, “I’m praying for them.” Every evening, Joanna goes to Mass at 10 pm, and she invited all her friends to go with her. To her surprise, they all turned up. Mass there was normally attended by just a handful of people, but this time the Church was full.  They weren’t all Christian, but everybody felt the need to pray.

More than 12,000 people have already signed up for the Friday walk. Though the sad, strange atmosphere still lingers and continues to be a suffering, Joanna is sure of one thing: “We have to show the world that love is stronger. We have to believe more than ever before in a united world, and to do our little part.”

The Jerusalem event is a follow-up to the Genfest 2012, in Budapest, where 12,000 young people from all over the world gathered.

Why Jerusalem?

«What we really want –wrote The Youth for a United World – is to witness everywhere universal brotherhood, and immediately we thought of Jerusalem, a city of contrasts and divisions, and at the same time the cradle of a millenary culture, a weave of peoples and religions, called since its foundation to fulfil a project of peace».

The year of the Genfest was inaugurated on the 1^st May 2012 with the motto “Let’s Bridge”. It was a year of dedicated to building bridges everywhere, in every corner of the globe.

This year, the 1st May 2013 in Jerusalem aims to be an important step in history, a significant moment in the realization of the worldwide project launched at the Genfest 2012:  the

“United World Project” (www.unitedworldproject.org).

What’s the goal of this trip?

To build bridges of peace and reciprocity, by practising the "Golden Rule" (Do unto others what you want them to do to you... Do not do unto others what you do not want them to do to you).

Dates:  Arrival in Jerusalem on the 24^th April and departure on the 2^nd of May

Cultural and artistic events, workshop with the international bands “Gen Verde” and “Gen Rosso”.

1^st May: top event within the interreligious and academic sphere, with a worldwide transmission.

Launching of the United World Project in Zambia

“Well, I am here today, representing the Youth for a United World (Y4UW), a branch of the Focolare Movement.

What I am about to tell you is something really interesting! I hope that all of you will get this great idea! Or at least, become curious about it. It is something that has emerged from the youth but it is open to everyone else! It is the “United World Project”.

Last year I was in Europe, and I attended an international meeting in Budapest – Hungary. It was the Genfest 2012, a youth meeting like this DYD (Diocesan Youth Day), we were youth coming from all over the world. We were more than 12,000 present in Budapest and connected to more than half a million youth through the social networks. The theme of the Genfest was “Let’s Bridge”. The aim was to build “bridges of fraternity” between different peoples, different cultures, different ages…

And it was there, in the Genfest that this new project was launched. Since then, we are working very hard on this project.

Building bridges in Chicago

Spring 2013: Feeding and clothing the homeless at the Ephraim Bahar Cultural Centre

We gathered at 2525 West 71st street, at the Ephraim Bahar Cultural Center, on Chicago’s south side. From 7am to 9am, the Youth for a United World and members of Mosque Cares (adults and youth) worked together to pack 150 lunches, ‘survival kits’ (toiletries), and sort men/women’s clothing to distribute to homeless Chicago residents. At 9am we departed in 5 vehicles and visited Pacific Garden Mission (Chicago’s largest overnight shelter) and Chicago Department of Human Services at 10 S. Kedzie to meet those seeking emergency shelter and interim housing. One vehicle also visited a women’s shelter on the city’s west side. The afternoon was fruitful, not only because we reached several dozens of homeless Chicagoans, but because our focus was on building relationships. New relationships began with those that gave and those that received, but also among us that came together to serve the poor. Many thank you’s, smiles, and handshakes were exchanged with our new brothers and sisters - a reciprocation of the basic needs like food, clothing, water, and personal hygiene products. In the end, it clearly wasn’t a charity project, but the cultivation of joy, community and growth of the human family. Join us again this summer!

Chasing the melting ice

Is it worth it to live 17 days and nights in a tent in the Arctic’s freezing climate in western Greenland, fighting bone-chilling wind gusts, eating canned food and staring at a shiny white glacier, from dawn until dusk just waiting for it to calve? For Jeff Orlowski, director of the documentary Chasing Ice, the answer is a resounding yes. The vigil was worth it. Jeff and his co-cameraman were ready with cameras poised when a huge piece of the Ilulissat glacier, similar in size to the lower tip of Manhattan with ice higher than its skyscrapers — broke off and floated into the ocean. The photographers filmed the largest calving of a glacier so far. “It was an amazing, miraculous, horrible event,” says Orlowski. For five years, he accompanied photographer James Balog on the Extreme Ice Survey project. What started as a student project for YouTube videos and promotional material, ended up as a documentary that won an award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. The final song “Before My Time,” sung by Scarlett Johansson, was an Academy nominee for best original song at the Oscars this year.

Chasing Ice causes the same reaction in the audience: Amazing! Miraculous! Horrible! It documents the melting of 18 glaciers in Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, Canada and the Rocky Mountains over a five-year period, from 2007 to 2012. James Balog, a Colorado-based photographer and environmentalist, had the ambitious idea of installing cameras that would shoot pictures every half hour as long as it was daylight to document the changes over the years as part of the Extreme Ice Survey sponsored by National Geographic and other entities. He encountered a lot of difficulties — some cameras didn’t work in the cold or were destroyed by storm gusts. New techniques had to be improvised, not to mention struggling with a knee injury. In spite of the obstacles he held on to his idea of giving visual proof of the change in the glacier system which in turn would be an indicator of the change in the global climate, considered no longer a normal fluctuation, but a man-made deviation that may be irreversible.

Uruguay: Creare una corrente nuova

Riunione GMU-UN con María Paz Echeverriarza: responsabile del settore Educazione dell’Unesco per Argentina, Uruguay e Paraguay

Il 25 marzo, una piccola delegazione del movimento Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) dell’Uruguay accompagnata da alcuni adulti nel settore dell’educazione, è stata ricevuta da María Paz Echeverriarza, la responsabile per l’area Educazione della Rappresentanza dell’Unesco presso i governi dell’Argentina, dell’Uruguay e del Paraguay.

María Paz è etnologa ed ha una vasta formazione tratta dai suoi studi e dal suo lavoro negli USA, in Argentina e in altri paesi della regione. 

Ci ha ricevuti in una luminosa sala riunioni che si affaccia sul Río de la Plata nel Palazzo Mercosur, dove ha sede l’Unesco. 

Prima di cominciare ha voluto che ognuno si presentasse. Poi lo ha fatto lei, dopodichè ha spiegato a grandi linee il lavoro dell’Unesco come Agenzia delle Nazioni Unite e anche i suoi rapporti con l’Uruguay e il Paraguay.

Le attuali priorità Unesco sono l’equità di genere (tra i sessi) e l’Africa. A livello regionale: il miglioramento del livello dei docenti, la disuguaglianza nella distribuzione dei redditi e delle opportunità, elemento che ci ha consigliato di includere nel UWP. Noi abbiamo ringraziato del consiglio e le abbiamo raccontato ciò che il Movimento dei Focolari fa già in questo senso, soprattutto attraverso la rete creata attorno alla nostra opera sociale Nueva Vida, da dove sono partiti con successo piccole aziende, sono nati giovani che ora partecipano attivamente in GMU (nel contesto di un quartiere stigmatizzato e da dove gli abitanti non escono mai), e anche attraverso il mondo dell’Educazione di Umanità Nuova e l’Economia di Comunione. 

Riguardo alla priorità Africa, abbiamo raccontato di come l’Africa rientra nel UWP in modo attivo e come attore che ha da dire e dare molto, anziché ricevere. Ne è stata colpita.

Bambini, ragazzi, giovani si interrogano sull’educazione oggi e con lo psicologo Ezio Aceti affrontano le tematiche familiari più spinose

Nei giorni scorsi si sono svolti a Milazzo, nei pressi di Messina, due importanti incontri promossi da “Famiglie Nuove” e “Giovani per un mondo unito”, con Ezio Aceti, psicologo esperto in tematiche familiari e giovanili. Dinanzi ad un attentissimo e consistente gruppo di giovani, ha sviluppato un tema scottante e per certi versi inafferrabile, quello della conquista delle libertà. Lo ha esposto evidenziando diverse sfumature, da quelle personali e interiori, a quelle che riguardano il rapporto uomo-donna, sino all’impegno nel sociale.

I giovani sono rimasti conquistati e in particolare è rimasto ben chiaro il messaggio per cui nulla è irrecuperabile perché “è sempre possibile l’amore”. E cosa c’entra l’amore con le libertà? «Sembra paradossale rispetto a quanto ci viene detto dal mondo intorno a noi» ha affermato Aceti, «ma la vera libertà sta nell’entrare nella pelle dell’altro, nelle sue situazioni, nella condizione che vive quando lo incontro. Solo così sono libero, libero innanzitutto da me stesso». Ciò non esclude ovviamente la necessità di riservare a sé spazi di solitudine, di silenzio, di rapporto con Dio. Da Dio infatti riceviamo sin dalla nascita quei cromosomi che ci ‘impongono’ di vivere per gli altri.

Successivamente, nella bella cornice naturale di Capo Milazzo, presso la Fondazione Barone Lucifiero, Aceti ha condotto un incontro dibattito sul tema dell’educazione oggi, rivolto a genitori ed educatori. Un folto pubblico, circa 120 persone, composto essenzialmente da genitori e docenti, ha partecipato all’evento rimanendo molto colpito dall’intervento di Aceti.

Uno spazio accademico dedicato al principio di fraternità

A conclusione del Seminario internazionale: “La fraternità come principio relazionale giuridico e politico”, organizzato a Loppiano dal 11 al 13 marzo scorso dal Dipartimento di Studi politici dello IUS, in collaborazione con la RUEF, una rete universitaria che si è sviluppata negli ultimi anni praticamente in tutti i Paesi dell'America Latina.

“L’interesse accademico per il tema della fraternità – così Antonio Maria Baggio, coordinatore del Dipartimento di Studi politici –, intesa non come relazione parentale o come legame interno ad una comunità, ma come principio di pensiero e di azione nello spazio pubblico, negli ultimi anni è cresciuto molto a livello internazionale.

Non si tratta di una scoperta recente: ha una lunga storia, la fraternità, ed è una storia plurale, poiché appartiene alle civiltà sorte in tutti i continenti ed ha lasciato tracce importanti, ma fino a pochi anni fa mancava la consapevolezza di questa presenza: non si comprendeva appieno il suo ruolo storico, sociale e culturale.

La situazione è andata modificandosi per vari fattori. Tra questi, anche l’interesse che sta raccogliendo in ambito accademico con la pubblicazione di lavori di rilievo e lo svolgimento di congressi scientifici. Il caso italiano è emblematico: nel Digesto delle discipline giuridiche, è entrata la voce “fraternità” che prima non c’era. Cambiamenti analoghi si stanno producendo anche in altri Paesi.”

Perché dunque occuparsi di fraternità? Anzitutto, c’è una profonda crisi della politica che interpella sia chi studia sia chi fa politica, ed evidenzia una grave incapacità di realizzare i grandi principi che troviamo in tutte le costituzioni democratiche: il principio di libertà e il principio di uguaglianza. Attraverso un processo di ripensamento storico si va chiarendo se questa incapacità della forma democratica non dipenda dalla necessità di riconoscere alla fraternità la funzione di principio regolatore tra i due cardini del progetto politico della modernità”.

How to win with the slowest player in the hockey league

When I was named one of six captains for my hockey league in my second year with them, it came as a huge surprise for me. I was inexperienced in being a captain. So I asked a good friend of mine to share the task with me, thinking he could organize the team’s defense while I took the offense. This move came as a shock to him, and when he later asked me why I chose him, I said it was because I trusted him. He told me that he had never been more motivated playing in a recreational league.

During the draft, when captains have to select players for their teams, a word came to my mind: unity. I wanted to make the chemistry and cohesiveness among my teammates the most important aspect for this team. When the team was set, we didn’t have the best players in the league or the best goalie. We even had the slowest player in the league — a 70-year-old. However, I was pretty sure our team mentality was so strong that we could make each other better.

"These past few weeks have been a strong experience of mutual love among us Youth for a United World. As you may already know, a mother of one of us was suffering from leukaemia and she passed away in the midst of our preparations for our last event, the movie for the Syrian Children. Before she left, she asked one of us to take care of the youth, and that is why we have worked together to fulfil her will. The success of the event was not only that we have built new bridges with the Syrian Children or that they were very happy but it was our strong experience of unity. Many new youth have participated, youth who have surprised us with their will to build this united world. Some of them, without even explaining the United World Project, signed right away solely for their belief in the united world.
