Summer School Internazionale 2013

Dal 25 al 29 agosto 2013 a Tonadico di Primiero (Trento): “Per una cultura del dialogo tra le civiltà. Le risorse delle scienze umane davanti ai conflitti”

Parlare di “civiltà” al plurale significa accettare in maniera convinta e profonda la presenza dell’altro e conferirgli la stessa dignità che si attribuisce a noi stessi. Pensare e praticare il dialogo significa considerare questa pluralità come una ricchezza e stimare la diversità come la possibilità di aprire l’uno all’altro aspetti sconosciuti del bene e della verità. Il mutuo riconoscimento e rispetto, il dialogo, l’arricchimento reciproco, sono dunque la norma. In questa prospettiva, invece, i conflitti vanno considerati come ostacolo da superare, o come eccezione o patologia. Ma le scienze umane si costituiscono secondo questa prospettiva? Oppure hanno scambiato i ruoli della norma e della sua violazione, così che è il conflitto ad apparire come “normale” mentre la pace viene resa secondaria? E con quali conseguenze sulla capacità delle scienze stesse di comprendere i conflitti, di gestirli attraverso regole, di sanarli? Forse un profondo ripensamento delle scienze umane, nelle loro fondamenta e metodologie, nei loro obiettivi, si rende oggi necessario.

By living the Golden Rule (“Do to others what you would like them to do to you; do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you”in the Focolare community of Acquaviva delle Fonti in southern Italy, people share the family spirit with others who are living far from their homes and loved ones.

They come from the most varied backgrounds, lands and cultures: Albania, Ukraine, Georgia, Morocco, Senegal, Romania, Nigeria and Belarus. Like many of their fellow countrymen and women they are leaving behind dramatic situations, as well as their loved ones in the hope of finding work and a better future for their lives.

They have landed in Acquaviva delle Fonti, a town of the Bari province which, like other southern Italian towns, has become the destination or crossing point for many who are dreaming of a better life. The Focolare community here has for some time felt summoned by their presence: “We had it in our hearts,” they write, “to see to it that these many foreigners/immigrants would feel welcomed in our city.” Personal relationships were established, bonds of friendship that overcame barriers and mistrust. “Three years ago,” they say, “we decided to organize a festival that we could all share during the Christmas season, so they could breathe in a bit of family atmosphere instead of the loneliness and marginalization that many unfortunately experience.” Our friendship became deeper and deeper. And now the Christmas festival has become an annual tradition. In what we call the ‘the people’s festival’ our friends now feel free enough to extend the invitation to other foreign friends, and we are more than happy to welcome them.”

WYD is fast approaching

A very intense programme with the over two million youths who are expected to attend, World Youth Day is also the first big event for Pope Francis.

“This is an invitation to be with the Pope as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus.” “We willingly and joyfully respond to this invitation.” Wherever the Church is, that is where we must be. The WYD broadens your horizons. It changes you and helps you grow in the faith. And so we are strengthened in our daily difficulties: at school, at work, at home and so on. The WYD leaves a permanent mark in the hearts of all the youths who’ve ever attended one, and we are certain that the same will happen here as well.” The speakers are Maria and Leandro, two young people from the Focolare in Rio de Janeiro. They are on location and actively involved in the preparations of this grand world event, but they express a commitment that involves the Focolare in various ways around the world.

What awaits the pilgrims who will be there on July 22-28? There are five main events planned for this pilgrimage:

• July 23: The World Youth Day Opening Mass in Copacabana.
• July 25: Welcoming Ceremony with the Pope on the shores of Copacabana, first encounter between Pope Francis and the millions of young people from five continents.
• July 26: Way of the Cross in Copacabanapresided by the Pope in the main park. The fourteen stations will retrace the path of Jesus with readings based on the great problems of today’s youth.
• July 27: Prayer Vigil with the Pope at the Fidei di Guaratiba Campus. Among the fifty artistic groups that will animate this prayer vigil, there will also be the Gen Rosso international band that will present its musical “Streetlight” involving two-hundred youths from the Fazenda da Esperanca and other communities. Gen Rosso has been on tour in Brazil since May 2013: seven cities and more than a thousand youths have been involved on stage, in the presentation of the show to another ten thousand spectators.
• July 28: The closing Mass at ten o’clock, celebrated by Pope Francis, marking the end of the World Youth Day and announcing the location of the next WYD.

One-Day Event – involving 65 young people with 15 promoters

Description:

Youth for a United World (Y4UW) group celebrated the United World Week 2013 by organizing "عالماشي- 2" as one of their social/environmental activities. Around 65 youth participated in the event that took place in different districts of Amman. The event included different phases, each participant tried to spread his/her desire to commit and make Amman a brighter and more colourful city! Our activities included: painting pavements, cleaning streets, distributing paper bags for cars’ garbage and distributing environmental brochures to the pedestrians, thanks to Greater Amman Municipality who have been a great support. The United World Project was launched at the end of the event where each participant planted a flower bush as his/her commitment to build a UNITED WORLD.

Results:

Not only is Amman cleaner with less trash and more colours, but also it has influenced the local community some of whom also decided to help us out. Furthermore, many participants have committed themselves to live the Golden Rule which says “Do to others what you would like them do to you” by signing the petition of the United World Project.

Evaluation:

This activity has been a boost to the participants’ enthusiasm to work even more for our local community especially after seeing all the positive reaction from the community and the media.

Da Nord a Sud il cantiere legalità interpella i giovani

L’appuntamento è a Caserta dal 29 luglio al 2 agosto. Arriveranno dalla Lombardia, dalla Campania e dalla Sicilia, ma anche dal Lazio e dal Trentino i Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) dei Focolari per un originale meeting voluto da loro stessi, che ha per titolo: “Legalità.Protagonisti della nostra terra”. Filo conduttore del meeting la diffusione nei territori di appartenenza di una cultura  che faccia terra bruciata intorno alla criminalità.

Giovanni è uno studente universitario di Milano che sarà a Caserta quest’estate, con tanti altri giovani della Lombardia. A lui abbiamo domandato cosa li ha spinti a realizzare questo originale progetto che lega Nord e Sud dell’Italia.

«Di mafie si parla spesso, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, e si comincia a parlarne anche nel Nord Italia. Di fronte a questo, se guardiamo con uno sguardo sincero la realtà intorno a noi, non possiamo restare indifferenti. Sapevamo in partenza di non poter cambiare un intero Paese da soli, ma abbiamo scelto di raccogliere una sfida: mostrare, nel nostro piccolo, che un’alternativa è possibile, e di farlo vedere lavorando – insieme e in parallelo, in tre regioni diverse toccate da questo fenomeno Sicilia, Campania, Lombardia – sullo stesso tema, quello della legalità. Abbiamo sensibilità e problemi diversi, ma a partire dalla base ideale che ci unisce, possiamo provare a rendere più unito, e più giusto, il nostro Paese».

I Giovani per un Mondo Unito si presentano

Siamo il Movimento “Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU)” fondato da Chiara Lubich nel 1985 e che fa parte del Movimento dei Focolari. La nostra età varia tra 17 e 30 e veniamo da diversi percorsi di vita. In realtà, la nostra caratteristica principale è l’universalità. Siamo giovani provenienti da tutto il mondo e apparteniamo a diversi gruppi etnici, nazionalità e culture. Molti di noi professano differenti fedi, mentre alcuni di noi non hanno un credo religioso; ma siamo tutti protagonisti appassionati della fraternità universale.

Questa corrente culturale penetra pian piano nel mondo giovanile, chiamato ad affrontare le numerose sfide che porta la provisorietà, il relativismo, l’individualismo, specie in occidente.

È un vuoto nel cuore di tanti giovani, che chiama un pieno, suscita una ricerca; quella di spendere la vita per qualcosa di grande: concorrere a realizzare un mondo unito.

Ed è proprio nella sfida quotidiana che i giovani cristiani hanno occasione di consolidare la scelta di Gesù come modello e del Vangelo come codice di vita.

I giovani appartenenti alle diverse religioni, accogliendo il Progetto del Mondo Unito, trovano uno stimolo continuo a rispecchiarsi con fedeltà nelle loro dottrine, come per esempio nella regola d’oro che invita a fare agli altri quanto vorremmo fosse fatto a noi.

I giovani di altre convinzioni condividono con entusiasmo ogni iniziativa concreta a favore del prossimo, esprimendo così i valori più alti dell’uomo.

Il forte spirito che ci anima suscita anche svariate azioni a livello locale e mondiale. Ne citiamo brevemente solo alcune.

Interventi tempestivi cercando di assistere vittime di terremoti, alluvioni, carestie, guerre... In questi ultimi mesi, per esempio, ci siamo impegnati per i bambini malnutriti in Costa d’Avorio e in Uganda, per gli alluvionati in Nigeria, Thailandia, Filippine, Italia e nell’aiuto alle nostre famiglie in Siria.

Impegno nel locale con micro realizzazioni di tutti i generi per costruire la fraternità nella    propria città, quartiere, scuola, università...

C’è un fermento di iniziative di fraternità  in tutti i 5 Continenti: opere a favore di bambini di strada, senzatetto, anziani abbandonati, persone con handicap, carcerati, immigrati… secondo le necessità più urgenti del posto.

Dal 1996 si realizza annualmente la Settimana Mondo Unito: è una proposta dei giovani alle città, alle istituzioni, a tutti per promuovere l’unità e la pace ad ogni livello. Giorni in cui si concentrano le più varie iniziative per incidere sull’opinione pubblica dei nostri Paesi, e testimoniare insieme che costruire un mondo unito è possibile. Un collegamento internet unisce contemporaneamente circa 4.000 punti del globo.

Genfest 2012: Nel settembre scorso, circa 12.000 giovani provenienti da 104 paesi ci siamo radunati a Budapest, Ungheria per festeggiare il 10° Genfest in collegamento con mezzo milione di persone attraverso i social network. Il titolo della manifestazione: “Let’s Bridge”, ossia, costruire ponti con tutti ed il risultato rimasto stampato nel cuore di tutti è che il mondo unito è veramente possibile!

Coscienti che non faremo il mondo unito da soli ma insieme a tutti gli uomini di buona volontà, collaboriamo con tutti coloro che s’impegnano per lo stesso obiettivo.

Homosexuality and adolescence

When I was around 12-13 years old I had a homosexual experience. Today I am 23, and a year ago, I got engaged to a girl I met in the parish. I believe that she is the right person for me. We have already started planning our wedding. Every now and then, however, I remember that experience as an adolescent, and I suffer, scared that I might be conditioned by my past experience. (GS)

Just the other day I happened to catch an interview on television of a group of elementary school boys (10–12 years old), who were on their way to becoming internet sensations due to their YouTube video showing their awesome and acrobatic dance moves. What surprised me what that these elementary school boys were openly homosexual, presenting themselves on T.V. in full make-up, spontaneous and proud of what they had achieved as a group especially as it brought honour to their school.

Adolescence is a delicate period in life where one is no longer a small child, and also, not yet an adult. At that stage one’s sexual identity is still being formed, and as yet, not well defined.

For this reason, a person may think that he is a homosexual (particularly when one has had such an experience as an adolescent).

What to wear?

“I didn’t want to fall into the cycle of consumerism”

While preparing for my brother’s wedding, I was having a hard time figuring out what to wear. My sister-in-law’s family is well-off and was used to expensive weddings. Ours is a very simple family, and we’re not used to spending that much money on fancy clothes. Since I studied in another city, during the weeks before the wedding, my mom would call me and tell me about the stress she and my sisters were going through trying to find nice but inexpensive dresses. She was also worried about my dress, since I was planning to go home just a few days before
the wedding.

I was a little worried, too. On one hand, I really wanted to dress well that day to make my brother and sister-in-law’s special day a celebration. On the other hand, I didn’t want to fall into the cycle of consumerism, spending a lot of money on a dress I would only use once!

With some of my friends who also try to live the Gospel, we decided to trust Jesus, who spoke of the beautiful lilies of the field that receive everything from God. He also said, “if you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (Jn 15:7). For me this meant to stay in the present, doing whatever I was doing (working, studying, cooking) with the zeal of doing it for God, without worrying about the outfit. Some of my friends lent me some dresses to try, but when I arrived home, none of them seemed to be appropriate for the occasion.

A couple of days before the wedding, I still didn’t know what to wear. I didn’t want to go shopping right away: God had promised to listen to our requests, and I was sure he was going to answer. I just had to trust him. I decided to ask a friend of mine, even if her clothes do not always fit me. To my surprise, the dress she gave me was exactly my size. It was beautiful, and since she had used it for a wedding, she also had the shoes and accessories that matched it! It was a great witness for my family of how God does take care of us, just like the lilies of the field. We just have to love and let him work!

Riconoscere e combattere l’invidia

C’è una nota che accomuna molte forme di malessere non inevitabile che affliggono la nostra società: l’urgenza di rieducare le nostre passioni e i nostri sentimenti. Una passione da rieducare presto è l’invidia, tra le più devastanti in ogni cultura, molto pericolosa nei tempi di crisi. Le culture del passato, a differenza della nostra, conoscevano i disastri prodotti dall’invidia non curata e gestita, e così avevano sviluppato un’etica idonea ad orientarla al bene o quanto meno ad arginarla.

La regola d’oro – ‘fai agli altri ciò che vorresti fosse fatto a te’ – può anche essere letta come una cura preventiva dell’invidia. Non a caso è posta dalla Bibbia al centro della prima fraternità-fratricidio di Caino. La nostra civiltà, però, fa molta fatica a capire l’invidia. La confonde con un’idea errata di competizione (battere gli altri), la quale viene addirittura presentata come l’unica strada per orientare al bene comune la natura invidiosa della persona.

Non la vediamo dietro alle crescenti invocazioni della meritocrazia, cioè del merito nostro e del demerito (o “fortuna”) degli altri. Non la riconosciamo dietro denunce e querele, e così non facciamo regole per bloccare sul nascere troppi processi evidentemente ‘invidiosi’, che assorbono immense energie morali ed economiche di cittadini e tribunali. Non la smascheriamo nella corsa al “consumo posizionale”, che ci fa indebitare per raggiungere i livelli di consumo di colleghi e vicini e di casa, un’invidia sociale che la pubblicità tende ad amplificare e il mercato a sfruttare per vendere le sue merci, aumentando il Pil e l’infelicità – eliminare la componente ‘invidiosa’ del Pil sarebbe un primo passaggio verso una misurazione del benessere reale di un Paese.

Building an Interfaith Community- Summer Course 2013

This course is designed to enable participants to encounter each other in mutual respect, to learn together, and to challenge and overcome stereotypes. While fully respecting and affirming each particular faith identity, the overall question to be explored is: What can we, as people of faith, do to respond and to overcome, the pressing challenges of our time as violence and conflict and build together mutually accountable societies based on respect and cooperation?

The course is open to young people between 18-35 years, with a maximum of 30 people to be accepted on the course. Participants should be well grounded in their own faiths and be positioned to influence the thinking of members of their wider faith communities after completion of the summer course. The structure of the programme will include spiritual exposure and sharing reflection on sacred scriptures as well as lectures and workshops on thematic issues.

The cost of the course is CHF 3,300 including course tuition, board and lodging. Scholarships are available to assist participants to attend the course. The Ecumenical Institute is sensitive to special food requirements and will offer spaces for prayer according to the needs of each of the participating faith communities

“Grazie mille di tutte le belle notizie che ci fate arrivare!

Vorremmo presentarvi un ‘frammento di fraternità’ per lo UNITED WORLDPROJECT. Si tratta di un’attività che facciamo presso una casa di riposo.

Siamo andati avanti, incontrandoci quasi ogni mese, ed è stata sempre una bellissima occasione per andare in profondità nei rapporti e fare qualcosa di concreto insieme.

Una cosa che ci ha dato tanta gioia è stata sapere che alcuni di noi, nel proprio tempo libero, sono andati a visitare gli anziani e addirittura uno di loro, dopo aver finito lo studio, ha invitato una delle signore ad una cena in un ristorante!

Nell’offrire ogni cosa per la pace in tutto il mondo!

Cleaning up in Amman

“We hope you are doing very well :)

We are very glad to tell you that our last event, “3al Mashi 2” has been a gift from God to all the youth. Several media channels: a national radio channel, a national TV channel and a national paper have covered this event. It was a boost to all the youth in finding a positive reflection on our united efforts for our community. Once again we realized that we are truly successful only when we work as one, with honesty and responsibility towards each other. Teens for unity have also been of great help and they have given us even more hope and energy :). We summed up our event with the United World Project (UWP) and collected some signatures. One of the participants wrote the following: 

“The most challenging part was to clean certain poor areas of Amman where we have never been before. In these parts of the city, there are a usually many uneducated children who do not usually allow others to enter.

While we were cleaning, there were many people on the road and they watched us as we worked. At first I was a bit afraid as I was not sure on how they would react. Surprisingly, we were joyfully welcomed and many came to thank us while we were working.

They were amazed by the fact that young adults like us were willing to give up our time to clean the streets. The thing we enjoyed most was seeing how proud the usual street workers were. They were not used to have someone assist them, and because there were so many of us, it showed how much we cared, something that a lot of residents and workers did not expect.”

We thank you very much for the mutual love that unites as even if we are so far from one another and gives us the energy and willingness to build a United World.

Al PalaVignola di Caserta dal 29 al 2 agosto saranno i giovani provenienti da ogni parte dell’Italia che vogliono essere protagonisti di un cambiamento della Penisola, i promotori e attori di questo meeting che coinvolgerà associazioni, imprenditori locali e cittadini . Per disinnescare la spirale della sfiducia simbolo di un territorio e oggi anche di un Paese, per rendersi responsabili e attivi di un cambiamento forte.

Nel programma di “Legalità. Protagonisti della nostra terra” molti workshop sulle tematiche dell’accoglienza, dell’ambiente e del lavoro, per dare risalto a quei comportamenti eticamente corretti che esigono una cultura delle legalità. Ci sarà spazio allora per il dialogo e il confronto, il lavoro manuale nelle terre e presso le aziende confiscate alla camorra, la pulizia di parchi e luoghi pubblici, ma anche ad attività in centri di accoglienza a persone che vivono diverse forme di disagio sociale.

Promotori dell’evento il Movimento internazionale “Giovani per un Mondo Unito” dei Focolari, Libera, Legambiente, FareAmbiente, Comitato don Peppe Diana, Fondazione “le quattro stelle”, Snc Libero Pensiero. Collaborano all’organizzazione l’“Associazione Mondo Unito Giovani di Puglia, Molise, Campania e Basilicata” e l’ Associazione “Focus Focolari”, con  l’attiva partecipazione dell’Amministrazione comunale della città di Caserta.
