In Assisi, Pope Francis answers to a questions on work an mission

Danilo Zampolini (Spoleto-Norcia) and David Girolami (Foligno) asks a question regarding work:

The general economic crisis of these last years has also caused situations of hardship and poverty in Umbria (Italy). The future appears uncertain and menacing. The risk is also to lose hope, together with economic security. How should a young Christian look at the future? What path should we choose to build a society worthy of God and worthy of man?

It’s lovely to be here together with you and to hear your words which encourage us and warm our heart. The Year of Faith, which will end in a few weeks, proposed to all believers again the urgency of the proclamation of the Good News. We also want to take part in this exciting adventure. But how? What can our contribution be? What must we do?

Pope Francis: “Here at Assisi there is no need for words! Francis is here, Clare is here, they speak! Their charism continues to speak to so many young people in the whole world: young men and young women who leave everything to follow Jesus on the way of the Gospel.

So, Gospel. I would like to take up the word “Gospel” to answer the other two questions that you asked me, the second and the fourth. One is about the social commitment, in this period of crisis that menaces hope; and the other is about evangelization, taking Jesus’ proclamation to others. You asked me: what can we do? What can be our contribution?

Here at Assisi, here close to the Porciuncula, I seem to hear Saint Francis’ voice that repeats: “Gospel, Gospel!” He says it also to me, in fact, first to me: Pope Francis, be the servant of the Gospel! If I don’t succeed in being a servant of the Gospel, my life isn’t worth anything!

But the Gospel, dear friends, is not just about religion, it’s about man, the whole man, it’s about the world, society, human civilization. The Gospel is God’s message of salvation for humanity. However, when we say “message of salvation,” it’s not a way of saying things, they are not simple words or empty words of which there are so many today! Humanity is truly in need of being saved! We see it every day when we glance through the newspaper, or listen to the news on television; but we also see it around us, in persons, in situations; and we see it in ourselves! Every one of us is in need of salvation! We can’t do it alone! We are in need of salvation! Salvation from what? From evil, evil operates, it does its work. But evil isn’t invincible and the Christian is not resigned in face of evil. And you, young people, do you want to be resigned in face of evil, of injustices, of difficulties? Do you or don’t you? [The young people answered: No!] Ah, good. This pleases me! Our secret is that God is greater than evil: this is true! God is greater than evil. God is infinite love, limitless mercy. And this Love has defeated evil at the root in the Death and Resurrection of Christ. This is the Gospel, the Good News; God’s love has conquered! Christ died on the cross for our sins and he rose. We can fight against evil and conquer it with Him every day. Do we believe this or not? [Yes! The young people answered]. But this “yes” must be in our lives! If I believe that Jesus has conquered evil and saves me, I must follow Jesus, I must follow Jesus’ way my whole life.

Indonesia: Youth Camp 2013

Da Yogyakarta in Indonesia Joy, Monika, Patrick, Gustavo, Paul a nome di tutti i Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) ci scrivono:

“Durante l’ultimo weekend di settembre abbiamo fatto un campeggio con i giovani a Yogyakarta. Eravamo una quarantina di persone, di cui 4 di altre chiese e 5 musulmani. 

Il motto del weekend era l’arte di amare (amare tutti, amare per primo, amare come se, amare il nemico, amare con i fatti). 

Dopo aver introdotto l’arte d’amare, la sera c’era un fuoco all’aperto con canti, danze in un clima di tanta gioia. 

Il giorno seguente abbiamo meditato un pensiero spirituale che invita tutti a portare la pace e l’amore a chi ci sta attorno. In seguito c’era un’attività per portare l’amore concreto alla gente del quartiere che è piuttosto povero.

Un gruppo dei GMU ha animato giochi per bambini che non volevano più andare a casa ed alcuni di loro si sono fermati fino alla fine del campeggio con noi. Altri gruppi sono andati dai contadini che allevano mucche o pesci per sistemare un può l’ambiente e in una moschea per pulirla insieme.

Così i giovani si rimboccavano le maniche facendo i lavori che servivano lì. 

E’ stato anche un’occasione per stabilire rapporti con la gente che abbiamo incontrato ed abbiamo spiegato a loro lo scopo di questo campeggio: quello di testimoniare che siamo un’unica famiglia pur appartenendo a vari religioni, tribù ecc... In cambio, la gente che ci accoglieva ci offriva un tè e qualche spuntino.

Abbiamo concluso con il Time-Out e un momento di scambio di testomonianze.

Assisi: A Response to a question on Marriage

Nicola and Chiara Volpi (Perugia-Citta della Pieve) asked the following question:

“We live in a society where well-being is at the centre, to amuse oneself and think of oneself. To live matrimony as young Christians is complex; to open oneself to life is a challenge and a frequent fear. As a young couple we feel the joy of living our marriage, but we experience the daily effort and challenges. How can the Church help us, how can our pastors support us, what steps are we also called to take?”

Pope Francis: “I’m happy that the first question was that of a young couple – a beautiful witness! Two young people who have chosen, who decided, with joy and courage to form a family. Yes, because it is in fact true that you need courage to form a family! Courage is needed! And your question, young spouses, is linked to that of vocation. What is matrimony? It is a true and proper vocation, as are the priesthood and the religious life. Two Christians who marry have recognized in their history of love the call of the Lord, the vocation of two, male and female, to become only one flesh, only one life. And the Sacrament of Matrimony envelops this love with the grace of God, it roots it in God Himself. With this gift, with the certainty of this call, one can begin with certainty, there is no fear of anything, everything can be faced together!

Polonia: I giovani in vacanza nella Mariapoli Fiore

L’anno scorso, dopo il rilancio dei giovani con il Genfest, era nato il desiderio di trascorrere insieme una settimana di vacanze. Tante sono state le idee, i tentativi di un programma e finalmente il nostro progetto si è realizzato dal 18 al 25 di agosto scorso sotto forma di un campo estivo per i giovani.

Vi ha partecipato una trentina di giovani che ci conoscono da un po’ di tempo e quelli che venivano in contatto con noi per la prima volta. Ci è voluto un atto di fiducia per credere che ce l’avremmo fatta ma dopo poco tempo ci siamo resi conto di quanto erano belli e ricchi i rapporti fra tutti.

Ogni mattina si cominciava con un momento di spiritualità: la Parola di vita scelta per la giornata e le esperienze di Parola vissuta del giorno precedente. Poi divisi nei gruppi ci si imboccava le maniche, accogliendo i bambini e ragazzi del retroterra per i quali ogni giorno si faceva un programma di 4 ore, aiutando nei diversi lavori della cittadella, uscendo fuori a trovare le persone che si sentono sole, e anche a raccogliere i rifiuti nel paese. Era il momento di vivere in modo concreto per gli altri!

Nel pomeriggio ci si ritrovava tutti insieme per i workshop o incontri tematici: sulla liturgia, sul posto dell’uomo nell’universo, sullo specifico dell’essere uomo o donna e sui rapporti fra di essi, sulla comunicazione, sulla sofferenza... Non era mancato spazio per dei giochi, lo sport ed anche per una cena nelle diverse case della cittadella – un’occasione speciale per conoscere meglio gli abitanti stabili!

Un momento importante è stata senza dubbio una veglia notturna davanti al Santissimo Sacramento fatta a turni: un colloquio intimo con Gesù per affidargli le gioie, preoccupazioni ed i propositi.

Abbiamo voluto concludere la settimana trascorsa insieme con una serata di festa con tutti gli abitanti della cittadella ed altri che erano venuti in contatto con noi durante il campo estivo. La gioia e l’entusiasmo di quei giorni ci hanno fatto programmare subito alcune attività per l’anno prossimo: nell’attesa di rivederci ci siamo promessi di vivere la Parola nel nostro quotidiano perché quella esperienza possa continuare anche nelle nostre città!

Un giovane che non ci conosceva ed è stato per lui il primo contatto con il Movimento, dopo ha scritto su face book: “Focolari, cioè il fuoco. Veramente esso c’era. Si sentiva unità la quale ci manca spesso. Come bello toccare il Vangelo e vedere che in un gruppo di una trentina di persone quest’unità è possibile. Guardano le nostre foto dei giorni trascorsi insieme tornano tanti ricordi, sicuramente ci incontreremo presto!”.

E un altro eco: “Maria Ti ringrazio per aver sperimentato l’unità e l’amore reciproco tra di noi”.

Il dato emerge dal Rapporto Giovani, l’indagine curata dall’Istituto Toniolo

Zenit.org - La lingua, i gesti, a volte le parabole. Sarà forse il nome scelto, ma San Francesco ha oggi, nel ruolo di grande comunicatore, un erede di tutto rispetto. Ovviamente, Papa Bergoglio. Certo, oggi, si usa Twitter, ma l’accostamento è davvero significativo. Lo dicono con chiarezza i dati del Rapporto Giovani, l’indagine curata dall’Istituto Toniolo, in collaborazione con l’Ipsos e la Fondazione Cariplo.

La ricerca raccoglie informazioni dettagliate sui valori, i desideri, le aspettative, sui progetti di vita dei giovani e sulla loro realizzazione. L’obiettivo è quello di fornire le basi di una conoscenza solida dei cambiamenti in corso e del loro impatto sulla vita delle persone, utile anche per intervenire con strumenti adeguati per migliorarla. I dati sono stati ottenuti da un ampio campione, rappresentativo su scala italiana, di 9000 giovani tra i 18 e i 29 anni.

In aggiunta ai risultati dell’indagine principale (in sintesi riportati su www.rapportogiovani.it), a giugno 2013 è stato sottoposto a un campione di 928 giovani rappresentativo a livello nazionale, un questionario di approfondimento su temi di attualità e sull’atteggiamento verso il nuovo Papa e le aspettative riguardo al suo pontificato.

I dati rivelano che, nel giorno in cui si celebra il Patrono d’Italia, che le similitudini con Papa Francesco sono davvero tante.

A partire come detto dalla comunicazione e dal linguaggio usato dal Pontefice. L’83,6 % sostiene che le parole scelte sono adatte al mondo contemporaneo, capaci cioè di raggiungere il cuore delle persone. Ma le similitudini non finiscono qui.

A SHOUT FOR PEACE

In response to the Pope’s call for peace and after a fruitful meeting with Emmaus, Giancarlo and several countries of the Middle East, an idea came across our minds, to dedicate an evening for Peace. Each country started to prepare their own program in their own country yet in unity with each other thanks to the social media which has helped us to connect together.

Jordan:

After the Pope’s call for peace, we launch a week, through our Facebook page, dedicating it for peace, starting 7^th September and concluding it with an evening inviting our friends! We shared the idea with the Youth of the Middle East, some of whom happened to be here in Jordan to attend a meeting with Emmaus and Giancarlo. We decided that all of us, each in their own country to do something for Peace on the same day and then to meet over a conference call and pray all together for PEACE.

We were around 35 Youth for a United World both Muslims and Christians; we started with a linkup with Brazil-Fortaleza, who wanted to assure us that they too are praying for peace as they we were meeting with youth from other Catholic movements. Afterwards, we called up Iraq; it was a great opportunity to assure each other that we are always united and we all work for the same goal. During our evening, we saw a power point of quotes and meditations from the Bible, Prophet Mohammad, Chiara Lubich, Igino Giordani, Mother Teresa and others. We concluded our evening with a prayer for Syria and the Middle East through a linkup with Lebanon, Holy Land and Algeria. Such a great moment: a living proof that the unity between us is growing despite the echoes of conflicts in our areas.

Holy Land:

The fruits of our meeting in Amman are great and the unity built with the Youth from the other Middle East zones is great as well. After less than two weeks from our meeting, a new idea is launched… to have an evening prayer vigil for peace with the Y4UW. During the evening we decided to have a conference call, to assure unity between us and to show the youth that they are not alone in the world living this way.

In our area, Aboud where Father Yousef is present, we had a linkup. On the first day, just like we planned, we had our prayer vigil and were connected with Lebanon, Jordan and three different areas in Algeria. On the next morning, we had a lecture entitled “To put God in the first place”. After the lecture we spent some quality time together, walking in the Lemon Valley, BBQ, socializing and experiencing mutual love.

Per una cultura di accoglienza

I Giovani per un Mondo Unito si danno da fare per diffondere e testimoniare una cultura di accoglienza. Maria Voce, presidente dei Focolari ha detto: «La strage a Lampedusa interpella il mondo e coinvolge tutti noi»

«Il sentimento di indignazione espresso da papa Francesco davanti all’orrore della strage che si è consumata oggi sulla costa di Lampedusa raccoglie anche il sentire profondo del Movimento dei Focolari», continua Maria Voce.

Una tale immane tragedia «esige una profonda presa di coscienza sulle cause profonde delle immigrazioni e sulle ingiustizie sociali, politiche ed economiche che ne stanno alla base».

«La politica nazionale, europea e internazionale deve assicurare a tutti gli uomini che vivono sul pianeta la possibilità di una vita sicura e dignitosa in nome della comune umanità, che oltrepassa ogni frontiera e va al di là degli stessi ordinamenti giuridici quando essi ledono i diritti fondamentali delle persone».

Simili stragi «spingono ancora di più singoli e gruppi a costruire capillarmente una cultura dell’accoglienza che apra gli occhi sulle quotidiane necessità degli altri». Questo l’impegno che si assumono gli aderenti dei Focolari e in particolare quanti già lavorano nei centri di accoglienza e di assistenza in molte città del Paese.

Refugee emergency: embracing immigrants

The refugee emergency calls upon the conscience and sets in motion a network of solidarity involving local institutions. Experiences from northern Italy

– “Let us pray for hearts capable of embracing refugees.” These words were spoken by Pope Francis on 8^th July, 2013 during a pastoral visit to Lampedusa where he was deeply touched by the never-ending exodus of refugees fleeing from hunger, fear, war and every form of distress in their homelands.

The story of Cristina, Elena and Maria Norena begins with an Italian language course. The three of them are members of the Focolare Movement, who felt called to be more personally involved in helping people in need. “It was in May 2011,” Elena explains, “the boats were coming at an unrelenting pace. Some 25,000 people were coming in from war-torn Libya. Two hundred immigrants came to our province in Trento. Most of them were young men between the ages of 18 and 30.” Maria Norena continues: “I also saw the lack of relationship and social life. These men told us of their solitude and they were suffering because they couldn’t speak Italian. Right away the others in our group offered their support and we began this project.”

The experience spread quickly and even some public institutions became involved. Cristina says: “We wanted to secure a future for these young men. With the help of many people we began to advertise in the local newspapers especially that of the diocese, trying to give a voice to these voiceless men. The bishop of Trent appealed to the Christian community to show concern for the young men who are our brothers and sisters.”

Meanwhile, the provincial administration decided to lengthen the project by granting two years of assistance to each immigrant from the date of arrival. At the end of the two-year period, the young men have to leave their temporary lodgings.

MARIAPOLI LIA: FESTA DEI GIOVANI 2013

“Sabato 28 tutto é pronto per accogliere i 600 giovani provenienti dai posti più lontani dall’Argentina e dai paesi limitrofi (Uruguay e Paraguay). Commincia la mattina con pioggia, e tutto il programma all’aperto deve essere cambiato, ma il sole che brilla dentro di ognuno aiuta a dare subito il salto.

Nel pomeriggio non piove e si fa visita  alla Mariapoli Lia. Alcuni di noi raccontiamo la nostra experienza di lavoro e come cerchiamo di vivere l’amore reciproco nel quotidiano in questo ambiente.

Alle 18 abbiamo la Messa seguita da 5 workshop che coinvolgono quasi tutti i partecipanti. Dopo cena un concerto che si chiude con musica e ballo fino alle 2 del mattino. Tutto si è svolto in un clima di festa.

La domenica, la grande sala è gremita da altri 400 giovani arrivati dalle città vicine: un totale di 1010!!! Con il tema: “Sei capace di grandi cose. Rompiamo gli schemi!” presentiamo il circo della società.

Attraverso diversi personaggi: una bambola, una maga, un arlecchino, un domatore ed un giocoliere, mostriamo gli schemi che vogliamo rompere. Prima di tutto: l’individualismo. Ma anche l’opportunismo al quale rispondiamo con la fraternità; la violenza col perdono e la pace; il consumismo con la cultura del dare e l’economia di comunione;  il senso profondo della formazione accademica e l’educazione col servizio e come ultimo la problematica ambientale e come risposta la presa di conscienza ecologica. Attraverso coreografie, scenette, il complesso musicale e testimonianze abbiamo tessuto il programma in sala con un ascolto profondo da parte dei partecipanti, che si alternavano con silenzi, risate, ritmi e applausi.

Poi, al centro del programma, la Messa ben curata per indicare il valore che ha l’incontro con Gesù. E per chi non partecipa ai sacramenti, un momento di riflessione con la proposta di vivere la regola d’oro.

Nel pomeriggio abbiamo animato altri 5 workshop e attraverso giocchi e riflessioni, abbiamo cercato di dare risposte alle problematiche esposte in mattinata.

Tutti noi, giovani ed adulti, impegnati in prima fila ad organizzare “La Festa”, ci siamo sentiti più che mai una famiglia ed era tangibile lo sforzo di vivere l’amore reciproco. Un trionfo di unitá tra le due generazioni.

Siamo molto felici dei frutti che ci continuano ad arrivare ed esprimono che tanti giovani si sono impegnati a “rompere schemi” per costruire una società nuova."

ATT - ARMS TRADE TREADY

Humanitarian curbs on deadly weapons boost new UN treaty, sharpen old debates

World leaders at the United Nations (UN) last week backed two steps in relation to the Arms Trade Treaty, promoted by churches, to make people safer through new laws to control deadly weapons.

The biggest event came as the United States, the world largest exporter of arms, signed the new Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) during a high-level phase of the UN General Assembly, 24 to 26 September. Twenty-six other countries signed as well. Churches had lobbied seven of the new signatories, including Zambia, the USA, South Africa, Sierra Leone, the Philippines and Ghana.

A UN majority of 112 world governments has now signed the Arms Trade Treaty in just four months.

The World Council of Churches and member churches have campaigned for the ATT for the past three years to block sales of arms which risk being used to commit atrocities and violations of human rights and humanitarian law. The next step is for 50 states to ratify the treaty and bring it into effect.

Humanitarian concerns were also prominent at a special high-level UN meeting. This gathering, devoted to nuclear disarmament, met on 26 September. Scores of countries, including all the nations of Africa and Southeast Asia, focused on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. Government and civil society speakers called for an outright ban on nuclear weapons, criticizing the current inertia in disarmament led by nuclear-armed states and echoing a core position in ecumenical advocacy.

“Weapons that have been outlawed increasingly become seen as illegitimate,” a representative of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons told the meeting. Several states pointed to the widespread condemnation of the use of chemical weapons in Syria, which are banned on humanitarian grounds, and noted that nuclear weapons are widely condemned but not banned.

Summer in Ottmaring (-:

Quest’anno siamo stati 3 ragazzi (Nicholas da Bologna, Elia da Bolzano, Andrej da Bratislava) e due ragazze di Milano e di Roma. La giornata cominciava con la lettura del vangelo del giorno. Poi un piccolo scambio e un’idea come vivere questa parola nella giornata. Fino a mezzogiorno lavori (in una farmcia, in un’azienda, nella manutenzione). Nel pomeriggio 2 ore di “tedesco” e tempo libero. Nelle serate varie attività, dalla visita da membri della cittadella, a serate tematici (sull’unità e sul dolore, sull’ecumenismo e sulla ormai storica divisione politica della Germania). Le finesettimane abbiamo fatto delle gite a Monaco, ad Augsburg, nelle montagne ed abbiamo anche visitato la cosiddetta comunità giovanile “Youth with a mission” che hanno un centro vicino ad Ottmaring.

Un culmine delle tre settimane erano i tre giorni di ferie per bambini nei quali i nostri giovani facevano da accompagnatori e da grandi amici amati!

Un’osservazione interessante di quest’anno: nonostante un programma molto interessante sotto il punto culturale e spirituale e nonostante la testimonianza di vita di parecchi persone dell’Opera; ciò che ha impressionato e inciso di più era la vita normale di ogni giorno in un clima di grande benevolenza reciproca e normalità. Le sfide della convivenza prese bene e il trattamento riuscito con la diversità ha provocato una felicità e una pace interiore sublime nei giovani.

Alcuni giorni dopo il rientro a casa un ragazzo ha scritto che è difficile per lui mantener questa “pace di Ottmaring” ma che vuole provarcela.

Intanto la nostra attività con i profughi ad Augsburg va avanti. Vi teniamo aggiornati.

Finishing the race out of love

“Tri for Tommy” brings endurance sports to a higher level

I have been involved in endurance racing for many years. For any of you who have done endurance racing, it is gruelling and requires will and determination to finish.

As with any sport you see all kinds of athletes with every motivation: personal goals and selfless goals to improve the lives of others. My first experience with triathlons taught me a valuable lesson about being motivated by love for others.

My younger brother, Tommy, has Down syndrome and loved to compete on the swim team when he was in high school. He was coached by a good friend of mine named Jimmie.

Jimmie was training for the Louisville Ironman, a long-distance triathlon, and, inspired by his relationship with Tommy, decided he wanted to race in honour of my brother. To be concrete in action, he initiated a fundraiser called “Tri for Tommy” and raised several thousand dollars for a local Down syndrome support organization.

Not only did Jimmie battle a painful injury to his knee, but he completed the agonizing 15 hour race and crossed the finish line hand in hand with Tommy. The joy on both Jimmie’s and Tommy’s faces was incredible to witness.

Le Nazioni Unite, che l’hanno istituita nel 2007, intendono celebrare in questo modo l’anniversario della nascita di M.K. Gandhi.

Vogliamo rilanciare questa Giornata in Italia, come appuntamento comune di iniziative e mobilitazione diffuse sul teritorio per promuovere la cultura e la pratica della nonviolenza, con particolare attenzione al decisivo tema del disarmo.

Per noi la Giornata del 2 ottobre assume il valore di affermazione di un nuovo orientamento politico, di rifiuto della guerra come condizione preliminare per una nuova società, ispirata all’insegnamento di Gandhi: “O l’umanità distruggerà gli armamenti, o gli armamenti distruggeranno l’umanità”.

Something really worth living for!

On 4^th March 1989, a Youth for a United World addressed the following question to Chiara Lubich, foundress of the Focolare Movement.:

Chiara, could you explain to us the course of action that the Youth for a United World should take. What do you expect from us?

Chiara answers: “What do I expect from you? I expect very much: I expect you to be new people - one must live our spirituality wholeheartedly, not half way. I expect you to be new people – it’s necessary to love. I expect you to form new people in the world, to build “local action cells” in your environments, which place Christ in the midst and bring his light into the structures so as to change the structures of the world. I expect you to build works that bear witness to the world that a united world is possible.

Look at Loppiano. There are many races, colours, young people and they are all united. Saint Augustine would say, “Si isti et illi, cur non ego?”; “If they have done it, why can't I?”. If Loppiano was able to do it, if O'Higgins was able to do it, if Fontem was able to do it, if these small towns can do it, if the Genfestcan do it, why can't I? Why can't the entire world be united?

The Pope said to a group of young people in one of the genfests, that great ideas, those that seem to be utopic, are the ones that make history (Genfest, Saint Peter's Square, May 18, 1980). Well, we must always be convinced of this idea of a united world and create public opinion.

Then you ask, “What should we do?” First of all, live (this Ideal), then bring about these works, and when people have seen, “come and see”, then you can speak, but not before, because they won’t understand you. They will tell you that it's not possible.

On the other hand, my dear friends, to live for something mediocre, to live kneeling or sitting before a television set for hours and hours; to live just to listen to music, to live for a trip with friends, is too little for a young person who has only one life. One should live for something great. God is proposing something great. It’s up to you to accept it. Ciao!”

Idea!!! Invitiamo il Gen Verde?

“Ciao a tutti,

Vi racconto come è nata quest’iniziativa. Con alcuni ragazzi siamo iscritti al tavolo per la pace della provincia di Bologna in veste di Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) ed abbiamo sentito l’esigenza di fare qualcosa anche noi. Infatti, sentendo che tutte le associazioni e movimenti iscritti realizzavano iniziative, ci siamo posti questa domanda: “Perchè non fare qualcosa per i giovani che vivono nei nostri Appennini? Proprio in questa porzione di territorio di montagna dove vivono la mia famiglia ed una volontaria come membri del movimento.

E’ nata così l’idea di chiamare il Gen Verde!!

Ci siamo fatti poi carico della cosa noi giovani appoggiata da alcuni adulti e abbiamo iniziato a collaborare a 360°!!

Infatti abbiamo voluto portare avanti più “filoni” paralleli:

Uno più religioso: cioè coinvolgendo tutti i cori delle 10 parrocchie del territorio a partecipare a un Choral Workshop, si trattava cioè di fare laboratori col Gen Verde per poi animare la messa conclusiva della settimana (6 Ottobre 2013). subito è stata accolta con gioia e ogni venerdì, da metà agosto, ci siamo trovati per fare un momento di preghiera assieme e poi provare i canti assieme. La prima settimana di ottobre ci saranno i 3 laboratori e, come detto, la messa.

Un secondo più laico; infatti abbiamo preso contatto coi due poli scolastici della zona e riusciremo a portare il Gen Verde a portare la loro testimonianza a scuola!! Sarà bellissimo e incontreranno circa 1000 ragazzi. Inoltre come lancio della settimana, il martedì, ci sarà un incontro con i politici locali, presidi, insegnanti, giornalisti e aperto al pubblico in cui lanceremo il progetto e noi giovani spiegheremo il perchè di tale progetto e presenteremo il gen verde.

Tutto si unirà il 5 Ottobre 2013 dove a Lizzano in Belvedere ci sarà il concerto del gruppo.

Post Genfest in Centro America

Si sono  realizzati  incontri post  Genfest a Guatemala, a Honduras (in diverse città: Tegucigalpa, Comayagua, Puerto Cortés, ad El Salvador (in diverse città) Usulután, San Miguel, Nueva Concepciòn, Santa Anna e San Salvador. Con l’aiuto della comunità abbiamo organizzato il programma, presentando e raccogliendo in cartaceo ed online le firme per lo United World Project. Era bello vedere come tutti siamo partiti con il proposito di costruire ponti di fraternità ovunque.

Il tema del post-Genfest “Let’s bridge” riusuonava fortemente. Comunichiamo uno dei tanti frutti  raccolti: per esempio a Comayagua (Honduras) all’incontro era presente una comunità religiosa al completo con la sua madre superiora. Le suore erano così contente che dopo l’incontro la Madre Superiora ci ha invitati a parlare dell’unità alla sua comunità. Tra l’altro ci diceva: “Sicuramente ci aiuterà a migliorare i rapporti tra noi”. Adesso i contatti continuano.

Slot Mob, a Milano “premiano” i bar senza slot

Dopo il successo di Biella, lo Slot Mob arriva anche a Milano. In centinaia, questa mattina, si sono dati appuntamento in viale Jenner per premiare il Bar Persefone, tra i primi della città a scegliere di non avere slot machine nei suoi locali. “Una perdita netta di 2000-2500 euro al mese” spiega il titolare “ma è più importante non dare modo ai clienti di rovinarsi una vita col gioco d'azzardo”. Per l’occasione l’Accademia Giochi Dimenticati, ha portato in strada il divertimento di una volta, dai birilli al tiro alla fune, mentre l’organizzazione ha allestito un torneo di biliardino “per stimolare la socializzazione, dato uno dei tanti problemi derivanti dalle slot machine è l’isolamento”. “Speriamo di organizzare almeno 100 slot mob in tutta Italia” si augura Gabriele Mandolesi, coordinatore dello Slot Mob “la cosa bella è che i titolari di locali che rinunciano alle slot sono moltissimi, ma rimangono nell’ombra. Humans ‘dominant cause’ of global warming

A landmark report from IPCC (Intergovernmental panel on climate change) says scientists are 95% certain that humans are the “dominant cause” of global warming since the 1950s.

The report by the UN’s climate panel details the physical evidence behind climate change. On the ground, in the air, in the oceans, global warming is “unequivocal”, it explained. It adds that a pause in warming over the past 15 years is too short to reflect long-term trends.The panel warns that continued emissions of greenhouse gases will cause further warming and changes in all aspects of the climate system. To contain these changes will require “substantial and sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions”.

After a week of intense negotiations in the Swedish capital, the summary for policymakers on the physical science of global warming has finally been released.

The first part of an IPCC trilogy, due over the next 12 months, this dense, 36-page document is considered the most comprehensive statement on our understanding of the mechanics of a warming planet.

It states baldly that, since the 1950s, many of the observed changes in the climate system are “unprecedented over decades to millennia”.

Nobel per la Pace Arias aderisce a UNITED WORLD PROJECT

A Roma, il 21 settembre, i Giovani per un Mondo Unito incontrano Óscar Arias Sánchez, Nobel per la pace 1987 ed ex presidente del Costa Rica. La sua adesione allo United WorldProject.

L’impegno comune per la pace. Ecco cosa ha fatto scattare immediata l’intesa tra la delegazione dei Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) e il Nobel per la Pace 1987 Óscar Arias Sánchez, già presidente del Costa Rica. Arias si trovava a Roma per una conferenza della Comunità di Sant’Egidio sul Trattato internazionale sul commercio delle armi adottato dall’Assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite e per l’udienza con Papa Francesco.

Obiettivo dell’incontro era trovare forme di collaborazione con la “Fondazione Arias per la pace e sviluppo umano”, giacché anche i GMU lavorano per la pace e la fraternità. I giovani presenti, di varie nazionalità, hanno quindi tracciato la storia di questo lavoro per la pace, partendo dalla consegna delle 350 mila firme raccolte durante la guerra fredda alle Ambasciate dell’USSR e Stati Uniti a Ginevra (novembre 1985), il lancio del Time-Out da Chiara Lubich (settembre 1990) durante la crisi del Golfo Persico, il premio Unesco per l’Educazione alla pace, ricevuto da Chiara Lubich (dicembre 1996), l’annuale appuntamento della Settimana Mondo Unito, il Genfest di Budapest del 2013, nel quale è stato lanciato lo United World Project (Progetto Mondo Unito) e il recente viaggio di Maria Voce ad Amman, in Giordania, per incontrare le comunità dei Focolari in Medio Oriente, con il successivo concerto per la pace tenuto dai GMU di paesi in conflitto.

“Se cercate un film in cui non esplodono bombe ma emozioni, non si infligge dolore ma si guarisce, e se volete assistere a una storia americana popolata da gente semplice, dai volti bellissimi, che prende decisioni complesse in nome della tolleranza, correte a vedere Mi chiamano Radio” (Francesco Alò, Il Messaggero 14/05/2004). Si tratta della vera storia di James Kennedy, ragazzo nero handicappato mentale, detto “Radio” per la sua mania di collezionare apparecchi radio. L’allenatore della locale squadra di football americano si interessa al ragazzo semplicemente perchè “gli sembra giusto”, integrandolo alla vita della squadra secondo le sue capacità limitate. Non mancano pregiudizi e cattiverie, sia da parte di giovani che di adulti, che considerano la presenza di Radio un “disturbo”, un’anomalia. Coach Jones (l’allenatore), con perseveranza e sfidando i pregiudizi, riuscirà a scuotere i benpensanti della piccola cittadina del sud per aiutarli a superare le loro paure. Anzi arriverà a far capire che “è molto più quello che riceviamo da una persona così, che quello che diamo”.

Un film eccellente per dialogare su pregiudizi, esclusione e sul delicato equilibrio che ciascuno deve trovare tra vita pubblica e impegni famigliari.

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Arias adheres to United World Project

On 21^st September, 2013 in Rome, Italy, Youth for a United World meet 1987 Nobel Peace Prize recipient and ex-President of Costa Rica, Óscar Arias Sánchez who adheres to the United World Project

A shared commitment to peace:  This triggered an immediate understanding between the delegation from the Youth for a United World (Y4UW) and the Nobel 1987 Peace Prize laureate and ex-President of Costa Rica. Arias had been visiting Rome to attend a Community of St. Egidio conference on the United Nation’s Arms Trade Treat (ATT), and an audience with Pope Francis.

The purpose of the meeting was to find ways of collaboration with the Arias Foundation for peace and human development, since the Y4UW already work for peace and brotherhood. The young people who were present at the meeting from several nations recounted the history of their efforts for peace, beginning from the 350 thousand signatures they collected during the Cold War and  handed over to embassies of the USSR and the United States in Geneva, Switzerland (November 1985). They went on to present the Time Out launched by Chiara Lubich in September 1990 during the Persian Gulf Crisis; the UNESCO Award for Educating towards Peace; the 2013 Genfest in Budapest, Hungary where the United World Project was launched; the annual United World Week and the recent meeting between Maria Voce and the Focolare communities of the Middle East that was held in Amman, Jordan, and followed by the concert for peace held by Y4UW from regions where there is conflict.

The Nobel laureate presented to the young people what the Arias Foundation for peace and human development has achieved from its beginnings, its current challenges and future dreams. For example, since there are so many war museums, why not build a Peace Museum? Moreover, Sanchez proposed collaborating with the recently approved UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) that is aimed at putting an end to the marketing of small arms which, in his opinion, are the cause of most of the fatalities that take place worldwide.

A Light that comes from life

How the charism of unity enlightens many fields of human endeavour today, five years after Chiara Lubich’s departure

“From the beginning, Chiara Lubich had an extraordinary understanding of culture. She enjoyed, for example, the discoveries of scientists, and there was even a time when she felt closer to them than to those of us around her,” recalls Anna Maria Zanzucchi, one of Chiara’s early collaborators in the New Families Movement.

The Focolare founder had a deep concern for all cultures, all disciplines, “even if she could not study them because God was calling her to other responsibilities.” Perhaps this is why she was able to distinguish the universality of true culture, finding a touch of wisdom in everything, “because, for her, culture was part of the experience of God.” As a young woman, Chiara Lubich was a passionate student who enjoyed studying the thoughts of the great philosophers. World War II, however, interrupted her studies.

She eventually continued them once again, but the growth of the newly born Focolare community in Trent made her realize that she had to abandon her studies once and for all and dedicate herself to the emerging movement. She always remembered that day when she actually put away her beloved books in the attic. But God led her, and those who are part of the Focolare, to learn something of his infinite wisdom not only in matters concerning theology, but also in other realms.

She wrote in a letter of 1946: “You see, I am a soul passing through this world. I have seen many beautiful and good things and I have always been attracted only by them. One day … I saw a light. It appeared to me as more beautiful than the other beautiful things, and I followed it. I realized it was the Truth.”

Chiara Luce, a tre anni dalla beatificazione

Il 25 settembre del 2010 veniva proclamata beata la giovane Chiara Luce Badano. Da allora, l’esempio della sua vita si diffonde con una forza straordinaria, specie fra i giovani.

Sono passati tre anni da quel 25 settembre del 2010 in cui Chiara Luce Badano è stata proclamata beata nel Santuario Divino Amore di Roma.

Sembra ieri, tanto sono vividi i ricordi di quello straordinario evento che pareva la realizzazione della lettera scritta da Chiara Luce ai suoi amici: «Sono uscita dalla vostra vita in un attimo. Oh, come avrei voluto fermare quel treno in corsa che m’allontanava sempre più! (…) Ma ora mi sento avvolta in uno splendido disegno che a poco a poco mi si svela».

Vorremmo ricordare la realizzazione dello “splendido disegno” che Chiara Luce ha realizzato in vita, con alcune parole dei genitori Maria Teresa e Ruggero, tratte dal libro di Franz Coriasco In viaggio con i Badano.

«Avete mai pensato, nei suoi ultimi mesi, di avere a che fare con una santa?».

Maria Teresa: «No, non ci abbiamo mai pensato, neanche lontanamente. Si viveva in una continua “straordinaria normalità”, anche se ormai Chiara aveva perso l’uso delle gambe ed era costretta a letto. C’era una grazia, evidentemente, che magari sul momento non avevamo neanche il tempo di realizzare pienamente, ma che vivevamo ogni giorno. Che è continuata anche dopo, e continua adesso. Era, se così possiamo dire, la “specialità” di Chiara: non essersi fatta santa fra atroci sofferenze (che pure ci sono state), ma essersi fatta santa nella gioia di amare Dio».

Ruggero: «Insomma, ripensando al periodo della malattia di Chiara non possiamo non ripetere ogni volta che davvero sono stati i due anni della nostra vita più benedetti da Dio».
