Senza fraternità è impossibile costruire una società giusta e una pace solida e duratura. E’ quanto sottolinea Papa Francesco nel suo primo Messaggio per la Giornata Mondiale della Pace, pubblicato oggi. Tema del documento è “Fraternità, fondamento e via per la pace”. Il Papa leva, anche, un appello vibrante affinché quanti seminano violenza e morte rinuncino alla via delle armi e una denuncia contro la corruzione e il crimine organizzato. “Rinunciate alla via della armi e andate incontro all’altro con il dialogo, il perdono e la riconciliazione per ricostruire la giustizia, la fiducia e la speranza intorno a voi”. E’ il pressante appello che, nel suo primo Messaggio per la Giornata della pace, il Papa rivolge a “quanti con le armi seminano violenza e morte”. E aggiunge: “Riscoprite in colui che oggi considerate solo un nemico da abbattere il vostro fratello e fermate la mano!”. Dal Pontefice, che auspica dunque una “conversione dei cuori”, anche un forte appello per il “disarmo da parte di tutti, a cominciare dal disarmo nucleare e chimico”. Anche perché, rileva con amarezza, “finché ci sarà una così grande quantità di armamenti in circolazione”, “si potranno sempre trovare nuovi pretesti per avviare le ostilità”.

New York Youth for a united World (Y4UW) (November 8, 2013)

The Y4UW of New York, in collaboration with the youth of “Muslims Giving Back”, an organization that reaches out to those in need in the city of New York, organized a movie night to watch “The Pursuit of Happiness”.

The admission ticket? A coat to warm a homeless in this big city during the winter. The high moment of the evening was when one of our Muslim friends told his experience of being a homeless himself while in school.

It is wonderful to know that at least some of the most needed in NYC will feel warmer this winter.

Pro Infirmis «Because who is perfect?»

Since 2^nd December 2013, disabled mannequins have elicited astonished looks from passers-by on Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse. Between the perfect mannequins, there will be figures with scoliosis or brittle bone disease modelling the latest fashions. One will have shortened limbs; the other a malformed spine. The campaign has been devised for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by Pro Infirmis, an organisation for the disabled. Entitled “Because who is perfect? Get closer.”, it is designed to provoke reflection on the acceptance of people with disabilities. Director Alain Gsponer has captured the campaign as a short film.

Córdoba, nel cuore della protesta, un segnale di pace

I Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) di Córdoba (Argentina), escono nelle strade per aiutare a ristabilire l’ordine e sciogliere la tensione, dopo i gravi incidenti di ordine sociale iniziati con lo sciopero della polizia.

Córdoba, una città con 1,2 milioni di abitanti, nel cuore dell’Argentina. La polizia provinciale protesta chiedendo un aumento di salario, fino al punto di scioperare, ritirandosi nelle proprie caserme e lasciando le strade senza vigilanza. Due persone sono morte e oltre mille locali commerciali, case private e perfino il deposito della Caritas sono stati presi d’assalto tra il 3 e il 4 dicembre, da parte di gruppi di delinquenti organizzati. Coprifuoco forzato per gli abitanti, rimasti chiusi nelle proprie abitazioni, negli uffici pubblici, nelle scuole e nelle università, con i mezzi pubblici fermi.

Per ristabilire la calma è stata importante l’azione di mediazione svolta dal Comipaz (comitato interreligioso), attraverso gli interventi del vescovo ausiliare Pedro Javier Torres, del Rabbino Marcelo Polakoff e di autorità e rappresentanti di diverse confessioni religiose.

A mezzogiorno del 4 si è arrivati ad un accordo tra le parti, in seguito al quale la polizia, poco a poco, ha ripreso il controllo della città.

Appena è stato reso pubblico questo accordo, ha preso il via l’azione dei Giovani per un mondo unito, così come ci racconta Ana María Martínez: «Stavamo assistendo con timore ai saccheggi, chiusi nelle nostre case. Ma non potevamo restare passivi di fronte a quello che stava succedendo nella nostra Córdoba. Avevamo un grande desiderio di dimostrare alla società che qualcosa di buono può uscire anche da tanta rabbia, pazzia e corruzione strutturale».

«Attraverso le reti sociali ci siamo dati appuntamento in una piazza della città. Alle 16,00 sono arrivati i primi giovani ed in breve eravamo già in 30. Era presente anche un canale televisivo ed alcuni giornalisti. Con il passare delle ore, si sono aggiunti altri gruppi di giovani avvisati con tutti i mezzi possibili. Alla fine eravamo più di 100, più le numerose persone che hanno preso con noi l’iniziativa di pulire nei propri palazzi o nelle strade vicine».

God’s sense of humour

When I started my first job after college, it was at a Catholic organization, and when I first arrived there I thought that everyone who worked there would be “nice.” But I soon realized that even in a religious organization, there are all kinds of people with all kinds of attitudes. I understood that loving would have to start from me.

Since the organization had been going through some restructuring, people were being laid off and departments re-organized. This caused tension, fear and suspense, and created strange dynamic even in my own team. It seemed that some colleagues were trying to make me look bad in front of my supervisors. I stopped looking forward to going to work. And in order to avoid the gossip and negativity, I decided to stay out of the way and just focus on doing my job the best I could.

One day when I went to Mass during my lunch break, I had arrived late. The moment I entered the church, the priest was reading the Gospel that said: “If you say you love me but don’t love your brother, you are a liar.”

Going back to the office, I knew what I had to do. It was so hard to smile at my colleague and ask how she was — it hurt my pride, but I made it.

Now I try to keeping going ahead doing this, and every time I fall, that reading comes to mind and helps me start again. God knows how to talk to us, and he really has a sense of humor!

Blessed Chiara Luce Badano has an impact on youth all over the world

Three years after Chiara Luce Badano was declared blessed by the Catholic Church, young (and not so young!) people all over the world have taken up her torch. They are spreading her story and following her courageous “yes” to trust in God’s love and his will in their lives.

She was chosen as an intercessor at the World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this summer. “A saint dressed in jeans” was the title of a musical at the WYD dedicated to sharing her life with the young people there.

Chiara Luce grew up an only child in Sassello, Italy. At 17, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive and painful form of bone cancer. Yet she trusted God’s plan, saying “If you want it, Jesus, I want it too.” 

October 29 is her feast day. Here is what some young people from around the world wrote us about her impact on their lives.

Today I get to love

If I could, I would tell every stranger I see about Chiara Luce. The truth is that her life is so beautiful that if more young people knew about her, there would be a revolution.

I’ve always been healthy and strong. I even played basketball in college. When I developed the initial painful symptoms to an illness related to multiple sclerosis, it was the first time in my life that something was stronger than I was.  The tests at the hospital were also very painful, and I was scared because they would have to be repeated.

That’s when I first read Chiara Luce’s story. I found a best friend in her, someone whom pain couldn’t conquer. And I started to invite her into my day. For example, if there was some act of love I didn’t want to do for someone, I would think that Chiara Luce would have done it, and then everything became easier.

A rainbow of hope

Dr. Suarez, a volunteer doctor in Tacloban posted on social media: “Every day there is a reason to be hopeful amid the bad news. I felt it and I know we have a lot to be hopeful about.” He posted the photo of a rainbow which he had taken as he climbed up on top of a structure on the morning of November 15, 2013 in Tacloban City, seven days after typhoon Haiyan hit Tacloban. It was a beautiful sign of hope for the Tacloban people who were so weary about the slow relief operations and the common sight of desperation in the city. The whole world seemed to be present in this part of the planet as relief volunteers and aid from the United Nations, from America, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, from other Asian nations, and even from China came pouring in. The Philippine Military and police became very much present in the region to restore order and ensure the speedy distribution of relief goods. The love and support of the international community were just overwhelming. The gospel prophecy “When I am lifted from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself (Jn 12:32),” seemed being fulfilled right here in Tacloban, and in Central Philippines.

Il governo si rimette in moto, gli aiuti internazionali arrivano numerosi, giungono notizie di semplici, grandi iniziative dei membri del Movimento dei Focolari. Le parole del vescovo Villegas infondono coraggio nei sopravvissuti al tifone Haiyan: le Filippine, finalmente, si rialzano in piedi

«Ogni giorno, nonostante tutte le cattive notizie, c’è una ragione per riacquistare la speranza». Queste le parole che ha scritto Greg Suarez, un medico volontario, quando ha pubblicato la foto dell’arcobaleno. L’ha scattata quando stava salendo in cima a una struttura a Tacloban, sette giorni dopo che il tifone Haiyan colpisse la città.

È stato un bellissimo segno di speranza per la gente della città, così stanca delle lente operazioni di soccorso e delle scene di disperazione nelle strade. Ma c’è anche un’altra ragione per sperare che pian piano le persone riusciranno a rimettersi in piedi. Lo scorso giovedì i media internazionali – fra cui la BBC e la CNN – hanno criticato il presidente delle Filippine Aquino per la disorganizzazione delle operazioni di soccorso. Forse questo ha fatto ridestare il presidente che si è rimesso in piedi ed è riuscito a organizzare il suo gabinetto dopo 7 giorni. Continuando a mostrare cosa sta accadendo a Tacloban e nelle altre aree delle province di Leyte e Samar il ruolo che i media stanno giocando continua a essere cruciale.

We are the “Youth for a United World (Y4UW) Movement” founded by Chiara Lubich in 1985 (born in Trent on 22^nd January, 1920 – and died in Rocca di Papa 14^th March, 2008). The Y4UW Movement is part of the wide ranging Focolare Movement.

70 years have passed since 7^th December 1943, when Chiara Lubich said her “YES” to God and triggered this new reality, at first within the Catholic Church, and later on spread to all humanity.

We cherish our deepest gratitude towards her and we wish to remember her through one of her meditations: “THE ATTRACTION OF MODERN TIMES”

This is the great attraction
of modern times;
to penetrate to the highest contemplation
while mingling with everyone,
one person alongside others.

I would say even more:
to lose oneself in the crowd
in order to fill it with the divine,
like a piece of bread

Ha conosciuto la lotta armata e la prigione, ha scelto il perdono, la non violenza, la riconciliazione e la verità chiedendo alla politica di rendere possibile l’impossibile: cambiare la storia culturale di un Paese e diventare un simbolo per il mondo senza usare armi

Ieri sera 5 dicembre è morto Nelson Mandela. Grazie per la sua vita, arrivata alla sua conclusione, sazia di giorni, secondo la parola delle  Scritture. Madiba, come lo chiamavano tutti con grande affetto, è finalmente entrato nella terra del santo riposo ed è entrato con pace e dignità.

Ha vissuto tutta la sua vita al servizio del suo popolo e del suo paese. Ha passato quasi trent’anni nelle prigioni del governo sudafricano che aveva fatto dell’apartheid, il suo programma. Ha conosciuto la lotta armata, ma poi ha capito che altre erano le armi con cui avrebbe vinto la grande battaglia di civiltà del suo popolo: il rifiuto dell’odio, la forza del perdono, la verità delle vittime, la conversione dei carnefici, la riconciliazione come grande sfida per il presente e il futuro del suo Paese.

70° anniversario del Movimento dei Focolari

Il 7 dicembre 1943 Chiara Lubich aveva solo i sentimenti di una bella ragazza innamorata di Dio, cui diceva il suo SI’ per sempre. Ciò le bastava.

Quanto avrebbe visto e vissuto negli 88 anni della sua vita non poteva immaginarlo: che milioni di persone l’avrebbero seguita, chiamandola semplicemente “Chiara”…

Di certo non pensava che con i suoi amici sarebbe arrivata in 182 nazioni, che avrebbe fondato un Movimento, aprendo canali di dialogo ecumenico, con le grandi religioni e con persone di convinzioni non religiose.

Nel 1977 lei stessa affermava: “La penna non sa quello che dovrà scrivere. Il pennello non sa quello che dovrà dipingere. Lo scalpello non sa ciò che dovrà scolpire. Così, quando Dio prende in mano una sua creatura (…) la persona non sa quello che dovrà fare. È uno strumento”.

Ha precorso i tempi, Chiara: nella società mondializzata, ha indicato la via della fraternità universale, ha amato la vita, ha tracciato una via di santità per tutti.

Chiara Lubich (Trento 22/01/1920 – Rocca di Papa 14/03/2008) è all’origine del Movimento dei Focolari.

Una religiosa della zona di Bouca, nel nord est del Paese ci racconta la quotidianità della sua missione che accoglie 369 famiglie sfollate per la guerra civile. Dietro la lotta tra fazioni si celano in realtà, interessi internazionali per fonti energetiche e materie prime

È quasi metà novembre e vi voglio aggiornare sulla nostra situazione. Qui alla missione sono accampate in tende di fortuna fatte con teli di plastica distribuiti dalla Croce Rossa Internazionale 369 famiglie senza casa con un totale di 1610 persone. Ci sono stati momenti in cui eravamo 2750 secondo i dati della Croce Rossa Centrafricana. Dopo un primo approccio alla situazione per conoscere i bisogni, la Croce Rossa ha distribuito fagioli, mais, olio e sale alle famiglie, e ancora coperte, stuoie, pentole, piatti, bicchieri, posate, bidoni, bacinelle a circa 800 famiglie: 400 musulmane e 400 cristiane.

São Paulo, Brasile: Raccolta fondi per le Filippine

I Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) di São Paulo, Brasile sono impegnati per raccogliere fondi per le vittime del supertifone che ha colpito le isole di Leyte, Panay e Samer nelle Filippine.

Come loro, ci sono tanti altri GMU sparsi nel mondo che stanno facendo delle attività per lo stesso fine.

Siamo generosi nel dare del nostro tempo per queste persone che soffrono.

70th Anniversary approaching

On 7^th December 1943, Chiara Lubich had only the sentiments of a beautiful young woman in love with God to whom she was giving her YES forever. That was all she wanted.

Could she ever have imagined that during the 88 years of her life, millions of people would follow her and address her simply as “Chiara”?

For sure, she didn’t imagine that she and her friends would reach 182 nations and open channels of ecumenical dialogue and that her spiritual family would welcome in the faithful of other religions and people without any formal faith. Quite the contrary: she never thought of starting a Movement.

In 1977, while going over her story, she stated: “The pen doesn’t know what it must write, the brush doesn’t know what it must paint, and the chisel doesn’t know what it must sculpt. When God takes a creature into his hands (…), that person doesn’t know what he or she should do. They’re just an instrument.”

She was a pioneer for her time: in a global society, she proposed themes and openings that pointed the way towards universal brotherhood. She respected life and traced out a way of holiness that can be practiced by anyone.

Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 4^th December – Eighth Evening of Hanukah 6pm: Candle-Lighting Ceremony in an Interfaith Spirit

Members of Kehilat Kol HaNeshama in cooperation with the Jerusalem Center for Jewish-Christian Relations and the Tag Meir Forum will be holding a festive Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony that will light up the city and Mount Zion in particular with pluralism tolerance.

At 4:30pm we will begin a walking tour from the Mamilla Mall and walk to Mt. Zion. The tour will include historical and topical explanations, including the race crimes that have occurred on Mt. Zion in recent months. The tour will end with a Candle-Lighting Ceremony at 6pm on Mount Zion.

Please dress warmly. Together we will light up Jerusalem!

Where will we meet for the Tour? Café Aroma in the Mamilla Mall.

Where will we meet for the Candle-Lighting Ceremony? At the tip of Gan Habonim, the southwest corner of the wall (the intersection of Etzioni Brigade, Mount Zion, and Ma'ale Benny)
