Una religiosa della zona di Bouca, nel nord est del Paese ci racconta la quotidianità della sua missione che accoglie 369 famiglie sfollate per la guerra civile. Dietro la lotta tra fazioni si celano in realtà, interessi internazionali per fonti energetiche e materie prime

È quasi metà novembre e vi voglio aggiornare sulla nostra situazione. Qui alla missione sono accampate in tende di fortuna fatte con teli di plastica distribuiti dalla Croce Rossa Internazionale 369 famiglie senza casa con un totale di 1610 persone. Ci sono stati momenti in cui eravamo 2750 secondo i dati della Croce Rossa Centrafricana. Dopo un primo approccio alla situazione per conoscere i bisogni, la Croce Rossa ha distribuito fagioli, mais, olio e sale alle famiglie, e ancora coperte, stuoie, pentole, piatti, bicchieri, posate, bidoni, bacinelle a circa 800 famiglie: 400 musulmane e 400 cristiane.

São Paulo, Brasile: Raccolta fondi per le Filippine

I Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) di São Paulo, Brasile sono impegnati per raccogliere fondi per le vittime del supertifone che ha colpito le isole di Leyte, Panay e Samer nelle Filippine.

Come loro, ci sono tanti altri GMU sparsi nel mondo che stanno facendo delle attività per lo stesso fine.

Siamo generosi nel dare del nostro tempo per queste persone che soffrono.

70th Anniversary approaching

On 7^th December 1943, Chiara Lubich had only the sentiments of a beautiful young woman in love with God to whom she was giving her YES forever. That was all she wanted.

Could she ever have imagined that during the 88 years of her life, millions of people would follow her and address her simply as “Chiara”?

For sure, she didn’t imagine that she and her friends would reach 182 nations and open channels of ecumenical dialogue and that her spiritual family would welcome in the faithful of other religions and people without any formal faith. Quite the contrary: she never thought of starting a Movement.

In 1977, while going over her story, she stated: “The pen doesn’t know what it must write, the brush doesn’t know what it must paint, and the chisel doesn’t know what it must sculpt. When God takes a creature into his hands (…), that person doesn’t know what he or she should do. They’re just an instrument.”

She was a pioneer for her time: in a global society, she proposed themes and openings that pointed the way towards universal brotherhood. She respected life and traced out a way of holiness that can be practiced by anyone.

Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 4^th December – Eighth Evening of Hanukah 6pm: Candle-Lighting Ceremony in an Interfaith Spirit

Members of Kehilat Kol HaNeshama in cooperation with the Jerusalem Center for Jewish-Christian Relations and the Tag Meir Forum will be holding a festive Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony that will light up the city and Mount Zion in particular with pluralism tolerance.

At 4:30pm we will begin a walking tour from the Mamilla Mall and walk to Mt. Zion. The tour will include historical and topical explanations, including the race crimes that have occurred on Mt. Zion in recent months. The tour will end with a Candle-Lighting Ceremony at 6pm on Mount Zion.

Please dress warmly. Together we will light up Jerusalem!

Queste notizie provocano orrore e sgomento, ma puntano anche i riflettori sulle tante contraddizioni e sulle idee confuse che vertono intorno alla parola “immigrazione”.

“Don’t let your youthful enthusiasm be stolen!”

During evening prayer with college students of Rome on Nov. 30, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of remaining faithful to the truth in the face of modern ideologies.

“If you don’t let yourselves be conditioned by prevailing opinions, but remain faithful to Christian ethical and religious principles, you will find the courage even to go against the current,” he said.

“The fullness of the Christian life that God carries out in man, in fact, is always threatened by the temptation to succumb to the spirit of the world,” he cautioned.

“For this reason God gives us his aid by which we can preserve the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the new life in the Spirit that He has given us.”

“Dear young university students,” Pope Francis encouraged, “your willpower and your capabilities, united to the power of the Holy Spirit that lives in each one of you from the day of your baptism, permits you to be not spectators, but protagonists in contemporary events.”

He then acknowledged the importance of facing life’s many difficulties. “One can’t live without looking at the challenges, without responding to the challenges.”

But “God is more powerful than our weaknesses,” he stressed. “God’s faithfulness never disappoints.”

“There are several challenges that you university students are called to confront with inner strength and evangelical courage,” he continued.

«Le donne nella Chiesa devono avere pari dignità»

A chiederle se le dispiace di non poter essere un sacerdote, lei che è una delle donne più influenti della Chiesa, si fa una risata sommessa: «Guardi, conosco pastore evangeliche legate al movimento, amiche e donne eccezionali che fanno molto bene nelle loro chiese, però io non ho mai pensato che la possibilità di diventare sacerdote aumentasse la dignità della donna. Sarebbe solo un servizio in più. Perché il punto è un altro: come donne, quello cui dobbiamo tendere, mi sembra, è vedere riconosciuta la pari dignità, la pari opportunità nella Chiesa cattolica. Servizio e non servitù, come dice lo stesso Papa Francesco...». Maria Voce guida dal 2008 i Focolari, due milioni e mezzo di aderenti in 182 Paesi, l’unico movimento guidato per statuto da una donna. È succeduta alla fondatrice, Chiara Lubich, che la chiamava «Emmaus» ed è sepolta poco distante, nella piccola cappella del centro mondiale di Rocca di Papa, con la vetrata che guarda tra i pini la sua casa e, di fronte alla lapide, un mosaico a rappresentare Maria come Madre della Chiesa. Il 7 dicembre saranno passati 70 anni dalla «consacrazione a Dio» di Chiara. Una donna laica che anticipò diversi temi del Concilio. «La Chiesa come apertura, comunione, amore reciproco...».

Qual è oggi il ruolo delle donne nella Chiesa, e quanto sono ascoltate?

«Il ruolo è quello di ogni essere umano, uomo o donna, che appartiene alla Chiesa come corpo mistico di Cristo. Come venga considerato da altri, invece, è una cosa un po’ diversa. Mi pare che le donne non abbiano ancora molta voce in capitolo. Tante volte si riconoscono loro i valori di umiltà, docilità, flessibilità, però un po’ ci si approfitta di questo. Il Santo Padre, del resto, ha detto che gli fa pena vedere la donna in servitù, non la donna a servizio: il servizio è una parola chiave del suo pontificato, ma in quanto servizio d’amore. Non nel senso di servizio perché sei considerata inferiore e quindi sottomessa. In questo credo ci sia ancora da fare».

Il Papa ha detto che bisogna pensare una «teologia della donna». Che significa, per lei?

«Io non sono una teologa. Ma il Papa ha dato il titolo: “Maria è più grande degli apostoli”. È bello che lo dica, è molto forte. Però da questo deve venire fuori la complementarietà. La partecipazione anche al magistero, in un certo senso...».

Stoccolma: Festival culturale

Siamo alcune delle Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) della Svezia e della Finlandia.

In questi giorni ci siamo lanciati a costruire ponti in un “festival culturale”, tenuto in un villaggio vicino a Stoccolma dove abitano tanti immigrati. Il festival era promosso da membri della Chiesa luterana, della Chiesa cattolica e dell’Associazione dei musulmani. Siamo arrivate già dalla sera prima del “festival culturale” e suddivendoci in tre piccoli gruppetti ci siamo resi disponibili per la preparazione. Eravano in sette.

Eravamo in sette ad aiutare nel workshop e nel servire il cibo. Nel workshop ognuno poteva esprimere il proprio sogno decorando un pallina di polistirolo e parlare di ciò che aveva realizzato con gli altri. In questo modo abbiamo avuto dei colloqui profondi. Una signora che diceva che non aveva sogni, l’abbiamo aiutata a scoprire che anche lei aveva un suo sogno. Siamo state nella moschea e ci hanno regalato dei libri che spiegano la bellezza dell’islam. L’Imam ha recitato delle preghiere dal Corano, spiegando che sia i cristiani che i musulmani cercano di fare la volontà di Dio.

Accanto alla Chiesa svedese si svolgevano diversi concerti, anche delle danze africane (dove alcune di noi hanno anche danzato..!).

In tutto sono venute 500 persone. Era un esperienza di dialogo di vita, di sperimentare che il mondo unito è possibile tra cristiani e musulmani.

Il weekend prossimo avremmo un programma in Finlandia. Sabato una giornata per tutti i GMU e domenica ci incontreremo con tutte le pesone del Movimento dei Focolari.

Faith communities advocate climate justice at COP19

At the 19th Conference of Parties (COP19) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Warsaw, Poland, representatives of faith communities called for a just climate deal to be adopted by the UN in 2015. Many observers viewing the event from ethical and spiritual perspectives commented that COP19 concluded without fulfilling expectations of the victims of climate change.

The issue of the impact of climate justice on vulnerable communities was brought into focus during a joint event of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and CIDSE, an international alliance of Catholic development agencies, held alongside COP19 in Warsaw on 21 November.

The participants in the joint event echoed concerns raised by Naderev Yeb Saño, the Philippines’ representative at the UN climate change talks, who called the parties to deliver a meaningful outcome and started a “spiritual fast” that lasted for the two weeks of the negotiations. Held in a context of more than 5,000 casualties and the destruction caused recently by typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, Saño’s symbolic act of fasting was joined by faith communities in Poland and beyond.

MONTIGNOSO. Tutti nello stesso posto, lo stesso giorno e alla stessa ora per dire no alle slot machine, no alla “droga senza sostanza”. È lo “slotmob”, in altre parole un flash mob contro il vizio del gioco, promosso da “Giovani per un mondo unito” di Massa-Carrara, in collaborazione con la parrocchia San Giuseppe Artigiano del Cinquale per domenica 24 novembre alle 9.30 al bar Bonotti in via Aurelia, aderendo così a una mobilitazione nazionale rilanciata dal Movimento dei Focolari. Il posto non è stato scelto a caso. È proprio da lì, infatti, che, in zona, è stato mosso il primo passo verso una lotta a quella che sta diventando una vera e propria piaga sociale: il gioco d’azzardo patologico e compulsivo.

I Giovani per un Mondo Unito del Portogallo si impegnano a donare alla loro società una cultura di fraternità

Vogliamo darvi notizie del nostro primo Meeting dei Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU), che si è realizzato in Portogallo nei giorni 12 e 13 ottobre: davvero fantastico!!!

Questo Meeting è stato uno dei frutti dell’esperienza che stiamo facendo, qui nella nostra zona, dopo il Genfest, e che è partita dal fare un progetto per e con i giovani. Vi ricordate? Abbiamo definito una meta - Una Cittadinanza per la Fraternità - degli Obbiettivi e una Strategia, che includevano, dopo un anno del Genfest in cui si è cercato di mettere in moto le proposte dell’United World Project (UWP) a livello locale, la realizzazione di questo Meeting a livello nazionale (nella cittadella Arco Iris): un passo che ci ha proiettati insieme anche verso il 1º Maggio 2014.

“Less Inequalities, More Differences”

“Less Inequalities, More Differences” is a title that highlights the multiple richness of people as an expression of personal talents and avoids the mortification of uniformity which paradoxically increases inequality.  I would like to translate the title into an image: the sphere and the polyhedron (a solid in three dimensions with flat faces and straight edges). The sphere can represent uniformity, as a sort of globalization: it is smooth, without facets, equal to itself in all its parts. The polyhedron has a form similar to the sphere, but is made up of many faces. I like to imagine humanity as a polyhedron, in which the many forms, expressing themselves, constitute the elements that make up, in plurality, the one human family. And this is real globalization. The other globalization – that of the sphere – is a uniformity.

A second thought is addressed to young people and the elderly: the acknowledgement of difference accords value to people, unlike uniformity, which bears the risk of discarding them since it prevents their significance from being recognised. Noawadays, the young and the elderly are considered dispensable as they do not correspond to the productive logic of a functionalist vision of society, they do not respond to any useful criterion of investment. They are described as 'passive', they do not produce but rather in the market economy they are subjects of production. We must not forget, however, that the young and the elderly both bring great richness: they are both the future of a people.”

“Thank you for all that you are doing to help!

We are very well and we were spared from the typhoon Haiyan and so together with the Youth for a United World in Dumaguete, we are carrying out several initiatives to assist those affected by the typhoon.

We have launched this slogan: “I was spared from the typhoon. I want to give up, to give back!” A night to raise funds for the victims was a success were we did a link up with the Y4UW in Cebu who were repacking relief goods and the Y4UW in Manila who did their fundraising too. There is also a video from some Y4UW from other countries participated Giving Up something to Give Back to the Philippines!”

Give back what matters to you most: your time, your attention, your freedom, your YOUTH, and put it at the service of others.

We can only do so much for a number of people, but there is a way where we are able to love EVERYONE concretely: PRAYER. Even your daily problems, the most little acts of love, the simplest joys: offer them BACK to the victims.

FIESTA A CHIARA LUCE EN LA CIUDADELA EL DIAMANTE

México, 27 de octubre de 2013

El domingo 27 de Octubre en la ciudadela El Diamante, Acatzingo, Puebla, México, 850 personas (en su mayoría jóvenes) provenientes de diferentes puntos del país, se encontraron para celebrar la fiesta en honor a Chiara Luce Badano. Una joven nuestra y para el mundo que viviendo cada momento a la luz de la voluntad de Dios alcanzó ya la santidad, y que los chicos sabiendo su experiencia la han tomado como inspiración en su caminar cotidiano.

La fiesta, que desde el año pasado ha significado mucho para los jóvenes de México,  este año tenía particularmente dos nuevas: la primera fue que se le dio un lugar especial a Chiara Luce en la recién reestructurada capilla de la ciudadela, momento realmente especial, pues dentro de cada uno de los participantes se sentía este espíritu fuerte de querer llevar a Chiara Luce a las calles y no dejarla en aquella imagen dentro del templo. Por otro lado, la visita del responsable del centro internacional de los Jóvenes por un mundo unido, Andrew Camilleri, le dio un toque especial al encuentro, pues comentó algunas experiencias de chicos que “viven” Chiara Luce en sus diferentes países y ciudades, motivando a todos los asistentes a caminar de la mano con ella.

El evento fue un regalo para todos, pues se sentía la donación de los jóvenes que organizaron el programa, los chicos que bailaron, que cantaron, que presentaron los diferentes momentos. Era indudable que cada uno se había preparado más allá de lo sólo humano, donde se veía esta ofrenda a Dios por medio de sus actos concretos. Todos los asistentes estaban no sólo impactados de la calidad logística del evento, sino que se sentían impactados por este ambiente tan radical que se vivía.

Al inicio del programa se contó la historia del ideal de la unidad, seguida de cantos, experiencias y momentos para compartir. La sala se ha quedado en silencio, contemplando y al mismo tiempo sintiendo la alegría de seguir caminado, cuando algunos de los mismos jóvenes han contado sus experiencias en torno a la vivencia del ideal de la unidad, siguiendo el ejemplo de Chiara Luce. También Giancarlo, copresidente del movimiento de los focolares, se ha querido hacer presente, y por medio de un mensaje ha invitado a los jóvenes a no dejar a Chiara Luce en la capilla, sino que los ha motivado a llevarla a sus diferentes ciudades, donde la juventud es cada vez más presa del secularismo y el consumismo.

HONG KONG: CORAGGIO E SPERANZA PER LA PACE

Da Hong Kong ci scrivono dopo un’attività per i GMU della Siria:

“Ciao a tutti! Vi scriviamo per raccontarvi un’esperienza bella d’amore reciproco vissuta qui in questo ultimo mese.

Dopo aver saputo delle sofferenze che stanno vivendo i nostri Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) della Siria e di come vivono con coraggio e speranza per la pace, ci siamo chiesti come potevamo fare anche noi lo stesso con loro. Abbiamo saputo che alcuni di noi avevano realizzato delle spille sul Time Out per la pace alle ore 12, così abbiamo pensato di diffondere l’idea di questo appuntamento mondiale vendendo queste spille ad amici e parenti. Il ricavato sarebbe stato il nostro piccolo contributo concreto per i nostri fratelli e sorelle in Siria.

All’inizio, facendo un atto di coraggio, abbiamo ordinato 600 spille, ma l’amore chiama amore, e nel giro di 15 giorni abbiamo ricevuto tanti ordini e perciò abbiamo ordinato altre 600 spille. Vendendo 1,200 spille abbiamo ricavato 440 Euro circa.
Avevamo anche un profondo desiderio di coinvolgere i nostri amici in questo progetto della pace e di vivere con loro la regola d’oro, come stanno facendo i GMU in tutto il mondo in questo mese di ottobre. Per questo il 26 Ottobre abbiamo pensato di organizzare una giornata all’aperto per la pace. Eravamo in 43, e ci siamo divisi in 4 squadre e abbiamo consegnato a ciscuno un volantino con una mappa ed una frase detta da personaggi insigni sulla pace e sulla regola d’oro. Ciascuna squadra doveva camminare per un’ora, cercando nelle insegne, o sui cartelli, i caratteri cinesi della frase loro affidata per ricomporla. Era una marcia silenziosa e significativa per la pace. Li’ immersi fra la folla, cartelloni e pubblicità magari insignificanti, sono diventati materia prima per cucire le nostre frasi sulla pace.

The love that makes us brothers and sisters

In the message of Pope Paul VI for the World Day of Peace, there is a passage near the end addressed to “sons and daughters of the Catholic Church.” In it the Pope invites us to “bring to humanity a message of hope through a fraternity which is truly lived and through an honest and persevering effort for greater, true justice.”

I want to consider for a moment this request of the Pope to his sons and daughters to offer the world a lived fraternity, in order to see how we can put it into practice and offer humanity a message of hope. First of all, we can ask ourselves: is there among us Catholics a basis for creating a more heartfelt fraternity? And furthermore, is today’s world open to this? If we look at the Church and humanity, we’ll see how they are subject to two contrasting tensions.

The Church today, too, as in every age, walks along the way of the cross since it has the same destiny as its Founder. A flurry of new ideas seems to menace the roots of faith and morality, raising doubts about everyone and everything. An overall protest estranges some of the Church’s best sons and daughters, impoverishing her by the loss of even those chosen and sent in her name to announce the Gospel.

Nella mattina di venerdì 8 novembre nel loro ufficio situato vicino all’aeroporto di Tacloban è scattato l’allarme rosso: lui e le sue truppe erano stati appena informati dell’arrivo del super-tifone chiamato Haiyan-Yolanda. «Alle 6 di mattina di venerdì eravamo fuori dall’ufficio osservando il cielo. I venti portati da Yolanda erano già forti. Noi (le truppe dell’Air force a Tacloban) eravamo preparati alla possibilità di una missione di salvataggio, già giorni prima dell’arrivo previsto di Yolanda. Già prima delle 7 le piogge hanno cominciato a scendere copiose e ci siamo dovuti riparare.

Philippines climate negotiator, Yeb Sano, calls for real action from Warsaw Summit in wake of devastating super typhoon

The Philippines' Climate Change Commissioner broke down in tears at the start of United Nations climate change talks in Warsaw today, pledging to fast for the duration of the two-week summit unless a meaningful deal is agreed to tackle escalating climate change threats.

Speaking at the opening of the COP 19 summit this morning, Yeb Sano, the lead negotiator for the Philippines, directly linked the Haiyan super typhoon that ripped through his country over the weekend with worsening climate change.

"What my country is going through as a result of this extreme climate event is madness. The climate crisis is madness," he told delegates. "We can stop this madness. Right here in Warsaw."

The Haiyan super typhoon hit central Philippines on Friday night, with winds as high as 235mph, making it the most powerful storm ever recorded. The typhoon is estimated to have killed up to 10,000 people with fears mounting that the devastation caused upon buildings and key infrastructure means the death toll could yet rise further.

Sano called on governments to take "drastic action" at the climate talks in order to stop super typhoons become the norm for the global climate.

In a dramatic pledge, he departed from his prepared notes to declare that he would not eat until a meaningful deal had been reached by the summit.

"We refuse, as a nation, to accept a future where super typhoons like Haiyan become a fact of life," he said. "We refuse to accept that running away from storms, evacuating our families, suffering the devastation and misery, having to count our dead, become a way of life. We simply refuse to."

Con mucha alegría y con una convicción grande de vivir el ideal de la unidad los jóvenes pertenecientes al movimiento de los focolares de México se reunieron el pasado sábado 26 de Octubre en la ciudadela El Diamante en torno a la reflexión sobre su ser y su quehacer, es decir, quiénes son, qué hacen y cómo se proyectan en la realidad concreta de sus ciudades.

Desde algunas horas antes del evento arribaron más de 250 jóvenes con todas las energías puestas para vivir de modo radical la jornada; chicos provenientes de los más diversos puntos del país, desde quince de puntos diferentes.

Desde el inicio del encuentro la alegría desbordó: los cantos, las experiencias y la vivencia de familia fueron el distintivo de toda esta jornada.

Cabe mencionar que hace año y medio Giancarlo Faletti visitó México, quedando muy feliz por la vitalidad que muestra la juventud mexicana y, atendiendo a la invitación hecha por estos quiso enviar a Andrew Camilleri, responsable del centro internacional de los Jóvenes por un mundo unido, para que compartiera con los chicos la jornada.

The 9^th World Assembly of Religions for Peace will bring Religious leaders together to collaborate for peace

On November 20^th, the 9^th World Assembly of Religions for Peace will convene in Vienna, Austria, bringing together over 600 religious leaders, representing all historic faith traditions and every region of the world, to address rising hostility towards the “other” worldwide.

Assembly delegates come from the Religions for Peace network of ninety national inter-religious councils and groups, five regional councils, one world council and global networks of religious women and religious youth. Assembly delegates include Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Indigenous, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Shinto, and Zoroastrian religious leaders.

“Each of our diverse faith traditions calls for people of faith to ‘welcome the other’,” said Dr. William Vendley, Secretary General of Religions for Peace. “This Assembly is an opportunity for diverse religious communities to work together to confront rising social hostility toward the ‘other,’ which takes the form of intolerance, and too often violence.”

Since 1970, Religions for Peace World Assemblies have addressed common threats to Peace and advanced multi-religious cooperation. At the 9^th World Assembly, Religions for Peace will identify ways religious communities can “welcome the other” by advancing human dignity, shared well-being, and a more robust notion of citizenship.

L’anniversario dei 50 anni dalla morte di Dio Robert Schuman, uno dei “padri fondatori” dell’Europa Unita, assume particolare importanza nell’attuale necessità di riappropriarsi dell’identità europea. La Dichiarazione Schuman (9 maggio 1950) risulta ancora oggi un appello di formidabile attualità: «La pace mondiale non potrà essere salvaguardata se non con sforzi creativi, proporzionali ai pericoli che la minacciano. [...] L’Europa non potrà farsi in una sola volta, né sarà costruita tutta insieme; essa sorgerà da realizzazioni concrete che creino anzitutto una solidarietà di fatto».

PROFILO BIOGRAFICO

Lo statista Robert Schuman (1886-1963), apprezzato avvocato e ministro degli Esteri francese tra il 1948 e il 1952, è considerato uno dei padri fondatori dell’unità europea. Deportato in Germania nel 1940, riuscì a fuggire due anni dopo, unendosi alla resistenza francese. Quando, dopo la guerra, assunse la carica di ministro degli Esteri, non mostrò mai alcun risentimento. Le sofferenze inflitte dal nazismo lo avevano semmai convinto che l’unità dell’Europa poteva avere basi salde solo poggiandosi su una riconciliazione duratura con la Germania.

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

This agenda for life is concrete and the core of what matters. It would be enough on its own to create a different kind of society, one where people are more like brothers and sisters, more supportive. It was part of a broader project put before Christians in Asia Minor.

In these communities ‘peace’ had been reached between Jews and Gentiles, the two peoples representative of a humanity till then divided.

The unity given by Christ has to be constantly renewed and translated into practical social action wholly inspired by mutual love. This is the basis for suggesting how our relationships should be:

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

Kindness: wanting the good of others. It means ‘making ourselves one’ with them, approaching them being completely empty of ourselves, of our own interests, our own ideas, of the many preconceptions that cloud our vision, to take on ourselves their burdens, their needs, their sufferings, and to share in their joys.

It means entering into the hearts of the people we meet in order to understand their mindset, their culture, their traditions, so as to make them, in a certain sense, our own, and really understand what they need and be able to discern those values God has planted in the heart of every person. In a word: kindness means to live for whoever is near us.

SARDEGNA: GENERARE L'AMORE

Respiriamo ogni giorno e tocchiamo con mano la violenza dei conflitti, le conseguenze di calamità naturali, ma anche la generosità che suscitano nei cuori delle persone. Ed anche noi, Giovani per un Mondo Unito ci siamo chiesti: “ma là dove la nostra quotidianità sembra filare liscia come l’olio,  cosa possiamo fare e quale può essere il nostro contributo per migliorare la qualità della vita delle persone che abbiamo intorno”?

Tanti di noi sono impegnati nelle proprie parrocchie di appartenenza e nel sociale, ma ci siamo sentiti chiamati a rispondere sempre più concretamente all’invito di Papa Francesco di “andare verso le periferie esistenziali”.

Cagliari è per noi oggi un cantiere aperto, settimanalmente diamo la nostra disponibilità alla Caritas e più volte alla settimana siamo presenti per la catechesi e l’animazione delle S. Messe nel carcere di Cagliari.

Anche io, da circa un anno, do’ la mia disponibilità alla Caritas in una parrocchia di Cagliari, nel reparto indumenti/giocattoli e alimenti di prima necessità.

Uno dei nostri compiti è quello di smistare il vestiario che tante famiglie generose fanno arrivare: eliminando tutto ciò che ci appare vecchio, rovinato e quindi non presentabile; con tanto amore e rigore li sistemiamo negli appositi scaffali e poi la cosa più coinvolgente e forte viene vissuta proprio nel servire le persone bisognose.

La Caritas è una realtà molto delicata, perché si entra in contatto diretto con delle persone che presentano situazioni di vita non facili.

The boys and I decided to drop by the grocery after church this afternoon to buy the stuff we would be sending to Tacloban City tomorrow. Nearing our house, we saw five Tawi kids waiting for us at the gate. With a smile they greeted us and handed me a small paper bag and said 'Pakisama nyo pa po ito sa ipadadala nyo bukas sa mga binagyo. ("please include this among the things that you will send to the victim of typhoon") Nangalakal po kami para din sa kanila ("we gathered scrap along the streets and sold it for them")… Sana po makatulong. ("hope this can help too")' I opened the bag and saw a kilo of rice, 2 sardines and three ten peso coins..Ung trenta po pambili nila duon ng tinapay para hindi mayupi sa byahe.' (" the thirty pesos is for them to buy bread in tacloban so that it will not be flattened during the trip") I held the precious bag so tight & assured the boys that their donation will surely help kids in Tacloban. I know how hard they worked today just so they could share. It's not easy being chased by dogs & cops and be bullied by all sorts of 'tambays (streetboys)' in the streets of Rizal... Not easy to walk the entire day looking for scraps in every street garbage drums..but they braved the heat of the sun and all other challenges just to come up with what they think would be of help to others..I said to myself, nahihiya ako sa kanila..hindi ako naaawa, humahanga ako kasi hindi lahat kayang magbigay ng may kalakip na sakripisyo..(“I felt ashamed towards them, I don’t pity them, but I admire them because not everyone is capable of giving with sacrifice...) so often we give from our spare..but these kids gave out of the only things they've got... Reminds me of the poor widow who gave 2 pennies for the Lord... She gave her all for the Master and that made all the difference..

Typhoon Haiyan devastates Philippines

Over 10,000 dead and hundreds lost. As solidarity is set in motion around the world, news continues to arrive from Focolare members in the Asian islands.

“We’re in need of everything, because the city of Tacloban practically no longer exists.” This news arrived directly from the Focolare community in the Philippines during the dramatic hours following the passage of typhoon Haiyan and the destruction it caused on November 9, 2013 especially on the islands of Leyte and Samar. It was one of the worse typhoons in history: communication and electrical power were down in many regions and with the passage of time the death toll continues to rise.

Tacloban is the worst-hit city. It is the capital of Leyte Province, an island in the central southeast. 10,000 of its 200,000 inhabitants are thought to be dead, and the number continues to grow. As in many of the islands, there is a Focolare community also in this city. Many of the inhabited regions are unreachable: “We’re trying to make contact with the people from the other islands and bring supplies, however the communications are still not functioning,” wrote Carlo Gentile and Ding Dalisay from Cebu. “One doctor, Himmel, along with Rey and Ladyliz attempted to rech Tacloban through the port of Ormoc, on the island of Leyte, but that city was completely destroyed and the roads were unusable.”

On the evening of 10^th November, 2013, some Youth for a United World from Tacloban, who were in Cebu at the moment of the typhoon, went with a coast guard boat to see how their families were, and check out the local situation.” “Also other relatives of persons with whom we are in contact on the island of Panay, also located on the path of typhoon, had their homes destroyed or greatly damaged.”

The central region of the Philippines, with the large group of Visayas islands was most at risk both because of the frequency of tropical storms and the construction of dwellings. The devastating typhoon hit the poorest islands of this region, the ones that are most difficult to reach. Aware of the risk, the government evacuated over 600,000 people and collaborated in the construction of refuges. Archbishop of Cebu, Jose Palma, invited everyone to pray, to ask for God’s help. Thanks to all this it seems that human damage was minimal compared to other times, even though the number of deaths is going to rise.”

Many people have often asked when tragedy happens or innocent people die and suffer: "Where is God in this moment?"

Then I remember that once there was a Lutheran pastor and theologian. His name was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He was an anti-Nazi dissident who was eventually caught by the Gestapo. He wrote many beautiful writings on the role of Christianity in our secular world which have become greatly important in our secular world - but in one instance, a co-prisoner was incontrollable as they both witnessed a 6-year old child about to be hanged. This prisoner questioned, "But that boy is innocent - where is God in all of this???"

Bonhoeffer turned to him and said, "God is right here - and right there in that image of the boy being put to death."

I wanted to tell you about this little story - that our All Loving, Almighty God is certainly One who has the power to put an end to many of our problems, but mostly, this is the same God Who watches and continues to love us from where He is, even through the experience of Suffering and Pain. There is always a plan of His Love behind all of these.

Le stime parlano di oltre 10.000 morti e centinaia di dispersi. Mentre si attiva la solidarietà in tutto il mondo, le prime voci che ci giungono dai membri dei Focolari dell’arcipelago asiatico.

«C’è bisogno di tutto, perché la città di Tacloban praticamente non esiste più». È la notizia che ci arriva direttamente dalla comunità dei Focolari nelle Filippine in queste ore drammatiche dopo il passaggio del tifone Haiyan e la distruzione che ha portato lo scorso 9 novembre, in particolare nelle isole di Leyte e Samar. È uno dei più violenti tifoni della storia: comunicazioni ed elettricità sono interrotte in molte zone e con il passare delle ore il bilancio si aggrava.

Tacloban è la città più colpita. Capoluogo della provincia di Leyte, isola al centro sud ovest, su 200.000 abitanti, sono oltre 10.000 i morti stimati, e il numero sembra destinato a salire. In questa città, come in tante altre isole, è presente una comunità dei Focolari. Tanti centri abitati sono irraggiungibili: «Dalle altre isole stiamo cercando di metterci in contatto e di portare i soccorsi, ma le comunicazioni sono ancora difficili», scrivono Carlo Gentile e Ding Dalisay da Cebu. «Una focolarina medico, Himmel, insieme a Rey e Ladyliz hanno tentato di raggiungere Tacloban attraverso il porto di Ormoc, sempre sull’isola di Leyte, ma anche questa città è completamente distrutta e tutte le strade impraticabili».

Officials estimate up to 10,000 people have died in Tacloban city (Leyte Island, Philippines) and hundreds elsewhere. Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced. The typhoon flattened homes, schools and an airport. It has since made landfall in northern Vietnam, near the Chinese border, where it has weakened to a tropical storm.

Supplies

Four million people have been affected in the Philippines, and many are now struggling to survive without food, shelter or clean drinking water.

A huge international relief effort is under way, but rescue workers have struggled to reach some towns and villages cut off since the storm.

"There's an awful lot of casualties, a lot of people dead all over the place, a lot of destruction," Richard Gordon, head of the Philippine Red Cross, told the BBC. "It's absolute bedlam right now, but hopefully it will turn out better as more and more supplies get into the area." He said roads had now been cleared to allow relief workers to get to the hardest hit areas, but that they expected to find many more casualties. "It's only now that they were able to get in and we're beginning just to bring in the necessary food items... as well as water and other things that they need."
