We were able to give out 1,250 Noche Buena packages

The Noche Buena project started out as a simple programme to give out Christmas packages to just 100 families in the community of one Bukas Palad social center. When I started it with a single post on my Facebook account, asking my friends for support, little did I know that it would evolve to something as amazing as what it had become.

I started to collect pledges from individuals to sponsor a Noche Buena for one family as early as September. The response I received was enormous such that I decided to share what I would collect to other Bukas Palad centres as well. When the super typhoon Haiyan struck the Visayan region, we felt that it is them in that region that needs to remember what it truly means to celebrate Christmas. We were amazed at how the original recipients of the Noche Buena packages willingly let go of their share in order to give them to the families in Leyte as to give them hope in the coming of Christ. And so we began our journey of preparation for the Visayan leg of the Noche Buena project.

We decided to visit seven places in Visayas (Tacloban, Palo, Ormoc, Bantayan Island, Sigma, Antique and Kalibo). One of the heartwarming experiences we had was when we learned that in Palo, there were 600 families who have lost everything and would really need the Noche Buena packs. The original allotment for them with the amount of money we had was just 300 packages. But with great trust in the providence of God and the generosity of the Filipino spirit, we said our yes, and we will give 600 packages to this area. And immediately, the money needed for this additional 300 Noche Buena packs arrived. We were also amazed at the response of people to donate toys for the children of Visayas, especially with the stories of the willingness of children to give their most loved toys for the Visayan children who have lost everything.

«Vivere insieme per qualcosa che possa rafforzare il bene nel mondo ci unisce e ci dà la forza, e ci spinge ad andare avanti verso il mondo unito». Sono parole di Igor dei Giovani per un Mondo Unito del Nordest del Brasile.

Ma cos’è “Desafio” (Sfida)?

«“Desafio” è una tre giorni – spiega Igor – di incontro, festa e condivisione delle tante iniziative che i Giovani per un Mondo Unito della nostra regione (che coinvolge sette stati brasiliani) portiamo avanti nelle nostre città. Ogni anno, siamo circa 350 giovani che ci diamo appuntamento nella cittadella “Santa Maria”, in Igarassu (Stato di Pernambuco). Il programma si svolge con temi d’interesse e di approfondimento, la condivisione delle iniziative svolte nelle varie città, vari workshop e dei forum specifici. Molto costruttivi sono i momenti dedicati a conoscere alcune opere sociali portate avanti dai Focolari e l’aiuto concreto che possiamo svolgere in quei giorni, come un nostro segno di amore concreto verso le persone del posto».

The experience of a young woman who was inspired to save her country, by giving rise to a youth movement in favour of civil rights and duties.

“It’s not easy to describe what we’re going through in North Kivu, Congo, due to the terrible situation of conflict that has been unsettling my country for years. Our history has been filled with so much suffering that is still not overcome.

Since childhood, I belonged to a community of people who were genuinely living the Gospel. When I entered university I found myself in a different world. I saw people reaching to the point of killing one another because of tribal and ethnic differences. Corruption, fraud, revenge and many other evils were the daily fabric of life.

When I graduated, I found work in a non-governmental agency that was working for the rights of Congolese women and particularly for women who had suffered violence and had their consciences enslaved. As I travelled all around the country I was met with the misery of so many people, even though Congo is very rich in natural resources.

A tribute to our friend Tom O’Gorman

Tom was taken from us unexpectedly in the early hours of Sunday morning. He had posted a new profile picture of himself on Facebook. He did not know that he would meet his Lord so soon, or that the circumstances of his death would prove so brutal and senseless. But such is the way it was, and we are left mourning a good and faithful friend, who witnessed to the values he believed in: faith in God, the Gospel, Truth and universal brotherhood.

Tom came in touch with the Focolare about fifteen years ago and its spirituality based on love of neighbour, became a touchstone in his life. A man of ideas, he liked to debate politics, arts, music and media also allowing the Gospel to imbue his personality and life. He was a real ‘people person’ always available to others with his wit, optimism, insight and creativity. You couldn’t ask for better company

Many tributes have been written to Tom: as a Catholic journalist, from Sarah McDonald from CatholicIreland.net; as a member of the Pro Life Campaign from its chairman Joe McCarroll; and as a fine researcher with the Iona Institute from David Quinn.

In the community of the Focolare, we are grateful to Tom for his great support and enthusiasm for the youth branches of the movement, in particular Youth for a United World (Y4UW). For years Tom worked with young people enjoying the many challenges and obstacles that went along with this. He was practical and expected the most of them.

He had the ability to blend with younger people. He would happily sit and chat away with them for hours. He found common ground – sports or movies, a game of UNO. Then he would begin a discussion on the deeper questions that many young people have inside, but perhaps do not get a chance to talk about.

He was generous with his time, willing to deepen personal relationships with cinema trips and cups of coffee, even though he drank neither tea nor coffee. His wide circle of friends loved his impressions. At a concert at a Focolare event some years ago when Tom was MC, he managed to keep up his famous Yoda from Star Wars impression for the entire show.

sappiamo che molti seguono con attenzione l’evolversi della situazione in RCA. Ancora negli ultimi giorni ci sono stati scontri in alcuni quartieri di Bangui, è una situazione prevedibile visto che il disarmo non è semplice e persistono zone di influenza, o possiamo dire d’occupazione dei combattenti ‘Anti-Balaka’ che si contrappongono ai ‘Seleka’.

Ma è anche vero che il centro città e le strade principali della capitale sono sorvegliate dalle truppe francesi, questo ha permesso una piccola ripresa delle attività e della circolazione.

Papa Francesco, un comunicatore nato

Ho preso quasi uno shock quando un omaccione tatuato, un ‘mangiapreti’, che vendeva biscotti in un mercato della Val d’Aosta, alla notizia che avevo finito le ferie e rientravo a Roma, mi ha detto: “Saluta Francesco!” con un tono come se il Papa fosse il suo amico più caro.

Un’altra sorpresa è stata la notizia che Vanity Fair, rivista non certo di Chiesa ma di star, gossip e moda, aveva eletto papa Francesco “uomo dell’anno”, dedicandogli la copertina del numero del 10 luglio 2013 e scrivendo: «I suoi primi cento giorni lo hanno già messo in testa alla classifica dei leader mondiali che fanno la storia. Ma la rivoluzione continua»[1] .

Papa Francesco si è presentato con umiltà fin dal suo primo incontro con la gente, si è inchinato ed ha chiesto preghiere. Una novità di stile che ha subito destato l’interesse dei media.

Today, we need the cultural courage to stand up against the suffering caused by an individual view which is produced by an obsolete anthropology and an economic ideology of a single dimension

“...(T)he crisis have given many and such denials of what appear strictly to be scientific estimates, advanced by economists. It is no wonder that any layman could believe to be authorized to proclaim the bankruptcy of the political economy... To the voices, some calumny, not a mitigating factor is lacking. In fact, many economists have sinned of immodesty”. These are the words of political scientist Robert Michels, author of the first book entitled “Economics and Happiness” (1917). He said this in 1933, but it seems to be written today.

Immodesty, or superiority, is not the sole prerogative of economic science, since it is a well-known universal anthropological tone. At certain times, however, the community of economists has been affected by a particularly stubborn and widespread form of immodesty. Faced with obvious deficiencies and errors of their discipline, instead of giving in to the force of facts and getting into a crisis, and instead of humbly revising ancient facts and dogmas, they stubbornly returned all criticism to the sender. The present is one of those times, and there is an increasingly strong need for a major overhaul of many dogmas and axioms of economic theory and practice.

Hunger Games - La ragazza di fuoco [2013 - 146']

Ecco un film quasi inevitabile: tra effetto moda e proposta di modelli comportamentali per adolescenti, i nostri teens si stanno precipitando per confermare un grande  successo, con centinaia di milioni di $ di incassi.

Se qualche genitore (tra i rari che ancora si interessano ai film che vedono i figli) è rimasto scioccato da certi aspetti della storia, i figli sono conquistati da un racconto avvincente e - bisogna riconoscerlo - da un prodotto di eccellente qualità.

"La Ragazza di Fuoco" è il secondo capitolo di Hunger Games (vedi), con un cast sempre eccellente, e una realizzazione ancora più riuscita della prima. 

Il regista Francis Lawrence – che ha sostituito Gary Ross nonostante il bel successo del primo film – sottolinea l'aspetto politico del film, facendo della protagonista Katniss una speranza per i popoli oppressi.  Le spirali del potere, la condizione dei ghettizzati, la semplificazione dei rapporti tra buoni e cattivi : Hollywood non si smente, evitando con cura un'analisi troppo approfondita o complessa, pur non cedendo mai alla banalità.

BUILDING FRATERNITY THROUGH EQUALITY

(...) I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Nobel Committee for elevating us to the status of a Nobel Peace Prize winner. (…) It will not be presumptuous of us if we also add, among our predecessors, the name of another outstanding Nobel Peace Prize winner, the late Rev Martin Luther King Jr. He, too, grappled with and died in the effort to make a contribution to the just solution of the same great issues which we have had to face as South Africans. (…)

We stand here today as nothing more than a representative of the millions of people across the globe, the anti-apartheid movement, the governments and organisations that joined with us in fight, not to fight against South Africa as a country or any of its peoples, but to oppose an inhuman system (the apartheid) and sue for a speedy end to the apartheid crime against humanity. (…) Because of their courage and persistence for many years, we can, today, even set the dates when all humanity will join together to celebrate one of the outstanding human victories of our century.

When that moment comes, we shall, together, rejoice in a common victory over racism, apartheid and white minority rule. Nel periodo natalizio la città è particolarmente bella: luci e decorazioni accompagnano chi passeggia per le strade del centro. Ma la mia sete di Natale non era appagata... Una testimonianza

Bangkok è una città bella, interessante, variegata e gentile, dove ti puoi trovare bene subito per l’accoglienza che la gente riserva a tutti, sorattutto agli stranieri. Sei in difficoltà? Chiedi aiuto a chi passa e stai sicuro che una mano ti verrà data. Ai “thai” piacciono gli stranieri, è sempre stato così. Sono thai, cioè liberi. Vuoi conquistare i loro cuori? Amali.

In questo periodo “freddo” (si arriva anche a 18 gradi) si sta bene. In giro si notano tante decorazioni: renne, babbi Natale a non finire, slitte, regali, orsetti appesi agli alberi, neve artificiale e... solo questo? No. Le chiese cristiane sono presenti e di tante denominazioni: il Natale è sentito anche come festa religiosa e sempre di più la gente sa di cosa si tratta. Ci sono gruppetti di studenti che cantano canzoni e raccolgono fondi per le vittime dell’inondazione nelle Filippine, per esempio: tra pochi giorni ne ospiterò uno a casa. È un piacere vedere questi giovani spendere tempo ed energie per altri che ne hanno bisogno. Qualche settimana fa sono stato chiamato nella baraccopoli più grande della città, non lontana da casa, per parlare del Natale ai bimbi di un centro di aiuto. È stata un’occasione unica poter stare con i più poveri e vivere insieme un momento di gioia e di dono reciproco. Perché il Natale è anche questo.

Blessed Chiara Luce Badano has an impact on youth all over the world

Three years after Chiara Luce Badano was declared blessed by the Catholic Church, young (and not so young!) people all over the world have taken up her torch. They are spreading her story and following her courageous “yes” to trust in God’s love and his will in their lives.

She was chosen as an intercessor at the World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this summer. “A saint dressed in jeans” was the title of a musical at the WYD dedicated to sharing her life with the young people there.

Chiara Luce grew up an only child in Sassello, Italy. At 17, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive and painful form of bone cancer. Yet she trusted God’s plan, saying “If you want it, Jesus, I want it too.” 

October 29 is her feast day. Here is what some young people from around the world wrote us about her impact on their lives.

A call to everyone

When I think of Chiara Luce Badano, the phrase, “A life lived to the full” always comes to my mind. Through her experience I have understood that the significance of our lives is not measured in how long we live or how many things we have accomplished or experienced, rather in how we lived it. She has given me the courage to embrace wholeheartedly the reality of each present moment, and to live it to the full.

Three years ago, the young people of the Focolare in the Midwest U.S. decided to have a program on the life of Chiara Luce Badano. Since many knew that I enjoy writing songs, my youth coordinator at the time, Margaret, asked me if I could write a song for it.

Facebook non tira più tra i giovani?

Facebook non è più di moda tra i giovani. Pare che alcuni si sentano addirittura “imbarazzati” all’idea di essere accostati al social network più popolare al mondo. È quello che emerge da un articolo dell’antropologo inglese Daniel Miller, pubblicato sulla rivista The Conversation e recentemente riportato su Wired, il quale ha condotto uno studio sugli adolescenti inglesi di età compresa tra i 16 e i 18 anni. La ragione di questo imbarazzo? È presto detto:

“Semplicemente non puoi essere giovane e libero se sai che i tuoi genitori possono avere accesso ad ogni tua indiscrezione”, argomenta Miller. “I giovani tengono allo stile e allo status che hanno in relazione ai loro coetanei, e Facebook semplicemente non è più considerato figo”.

“One of the difficulties that families find when moving to US is the education system and bureaucracy.

Especially when it is time to apply to College…

Also for some of the Y4UW that moved to near Washington, DC with their families, this is a challenge.

When they shared this struggle, another couple who also lives for a united world, had an idea: since they went through the whole process with their own children and are so familiar with the whole process, why not offer their help?

So one evening, they gather with two other families: one from Egypt and another one from Korea and went through the whole process and answer to all their questions.

It was an amazing evening! Everyone participated in the discussion, young and adults, and there was such a big sense of peace and serenity among all and more clarity in which steps to take next.

It was an experience of being part of a larger “family”, even in such a different country! They now decided to keep in touch in the future and keep helping each other.”

FRATERNITA’ NELL’UGUAGLIANZA - VINCERE OGNI DISCRIMINAZIONE

Ad un mese dalla morte di Nelson Mandela, vogliamo ricordare questo grande uomo attraverso dei stralci del suo discorso quando ha ricevuto il Premio Nobel per la Pace nel 1993

“(...) Estendo il mio sentito ringraziamento al Comitato per il Nobel per averci insignito del premio nobel per la pace. (…) Non voglio essere presuntuoso se aggiungo anche, tra i nostri predecessori, il nome di un altro eccezionale vincitore, il defunto reverendo Martin Luther King Jr. Anche lui lottò e morì per dare un contributo alla soluzione delle stesse grandi questioni che noi abbiamo dovuto affrontare come cittadini del Sud Africa. (…)

Siamo qui oggi come semplici rappresentanti di milioni di persone in tutto il mondo, il movimento anti-apartheid, i governi e le organizzazioni che hanno lottato con noi, non per combattere contro il Sud Africa come paese o contro uno dei suoi popoli, ma per opporsi al sistema inumano (dell’apartheid) e impegnarsi per una veloce fine dei crimini contro l’umanità causati dall’apartheid. (…) Grazie al loro coraggio e alla loro perseveranza negli anni, noi oggi possiamo anche fissare le date dei giorni in cui l’umanità si riunirà per festeggiare una delle eccezionali vittiorie umane del nostro secolo.

Suspended Coffees

“We enter a little coffeehouse with a friend of mine and give our order. While we’re approaching our table two people come in and they go to the counter: ‘Five coffees, please. Two of them for us and three suspended.’ They pay for their order, take the two and leave.

I ask my friend: “What are those ‘suspended’ coffees?” My friend: “Wait for it and you will see.” Some more people enter. Two girls ask for one coffee each, pay and go. The next order was for seven coffees and it was made by three lawyers - three for them and four ‘suspended’. While I still wonder what’s the deal with those ‘suspended’ coffees I enjoy the sunny weather and the beautiful view towards the square in front of the café.

Suddenly a man dressed in shabby clothes who looks like a beggar comes in through the door and kindly asks ‘Do you have any suspended coffee?’ It’s simple - people pay in advance for a coffee meant for someone who cannot afford a warm beverage.

The tradition with the suspended coffees started in Naples, but it has spread all over the world and in some places you can order not only a suspended coffee, but also a sandwich or a whole meal. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have such cafés or even grocery stores in every town where the less fortunate will find hope and support? If you own a business why don’t you offer it to your clients… I am sure many of them will like it.

Natale sulla strada, a Santiago del Cile

La testimonianza dei Giovani per un Mondo Unito, in un lavoro a squadra con la comunità dei Focolari sul posto, per una condivisione profonda con chi più soffre.

«Anche qui oggi è nato Gesù, in questa piazza della periferia di Santiago. Come ogni anno celebriamo il Natale insieme ai nostri amici che abitano sulla strada o magari non hanno nessuno con cui fare festa. È bello vedere giovani, adulti e bambini che condividono insieme e si siedono alla stessa tavola senza guardare alle differenze.

Questa volta erano tanti i migranti, soprattutto arrivati dal Perù in cerca di lavoro, e con molti bambini, ma la situazione qui per loro non è rosea. Altri arrivano dalle regioni del Cile colpite dal terremoto del 2010 e ancora aspettano una casa. Altri hanno appena iniziato questo “percorso” in strada e sono scoraggiati: Nelson, ad esempio, è uscito da casa da 3 mesi, sua moglie non vuole più saperne perché lui beve; a tavola si parla, lui racconta di essere molto triste e di avere nostalgia della sua famiglia. Loreto lo invita a tornare a credere, è Natale! E gli offre aiuto.

L’indomani Nelson va alla “casetta Primi tempi” [un appartamentino dove abitano insieme alcuni dei giovani del Movimento dei Focolari, per fare un’esperienza alla luce del Vangelo, sull’esempio di Chiara Lubich e le prime focolarine, ndr]. Lì può lavarsi, farsi la barba, riceve in dono un pantalone e una bella camicia da uno dei giovani, e poi, con uno di noi, va a casa della moglie. La gioia della bambina alla vista del papà è incontenibile. Spieghiamo la situazione alla moglie, la quale dopo un po’ accetta di ricominciare e rimangono tutto il pomeriggio insieme. La sera, accompagniamo Nelson al “Hogar de Cristo”. Lì le condizioni sono precise: 0 alcol, e lui ci sta. Ora sarà un lavoro ad equipe, dobbiamo aiutarci, ma il Bambino ha portato questo dono e molti altri, che ci spingono ad essere quelle braccia del Suo Amore perché arrivi dappertutto.

Non c’é dubbio che il mondo unito è possibile, si tratta solo di mettercela tutta e scoprire insieme come fare per realizzarlo».

Durante questo periodo natalizio abbiamo dedicato questi giorni stupendi ad accogliere l’un l’altro e costruire la pace con tutti. Il 23 dicembre, noi Giovani per un Mondo Unito abbiamo festeggiato Natale a Betlemme con dei bambini malati assistiti dal Centro per tumori Basma.

I Giovani per un Mondo Unito (GMU) di Sant’Anastasia, insieme all’Associazione “LUCINCITTA’”, ti invitano a partecipare per festeggiare insieme la notte più lunga dell’anno...

Negli ultimi anni, grazie all’aiuto di tanti amici e amiche che hanno partecipato alle feste, abbiamo contribuito:

• al Progetto Latte, portato avanti presso l’ospedale Mary Health of Africa di Fontem , allo scopo di prevenire la trasmissione del virus dell’HIV da madri sieropositive ai figli mediante l’acquisto di latte artificiale in sostituzione del latte materno, sostenendo 6 quote per complessivi € 3.000,00;
• nell’ambito del Progetto “Fraternità per l’Africa” ad una borsa di studio di € 2.000,00 per permettere ad un/una giovane dell’Africa sub-sahariana di seguire un corso in una scuola tecnica o un corso professionale;
• l’acquisto di uno scanner per lo Zia Angelina Health Center di Namugongo (Uganda) con circa € 1.800,00.

Inoltre, grazie all’aiuto di tutti, abbiamo dato vita al Centro Luce, centro giovanile permanente dove sperimentare che la fraternità universale è davvero una realtà!

Abound in love for one another

“May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all.” (1 Thes. 3:12)

This is an expression St. Paul uses frequently. He wishes for special graces for his communities and, at the same time, prays to the Lord for them (see Eph 3:18, Phil 1:9).

Here he asks that the Thessalonians be granted the grace of an ever-more abundant mutual love. This is not meant to appear as a veiled reprimand, as if mutual love were not already a reality in their community. Rather, it is a reminder of a law that exists in the very nature of love, that is, its constant growth.

“May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all.”

Love is the very centre of Christian life. If it does not grow, the whole life of a Christian suffers the consequences by becoming weak and eventually dying out.

It is not enough to have understood in a moment of light what the commandment on love of neighbour means. It is not enough to have experienced, in a burst of enthusiasm, love’s impetus and zeal at the beginning of our conversion to a more Gospel-oriented life.

We need to make love grow by keeping it alive, active and concrete. This will happen if we make quick and generous use of the many opportunities offered to us each day.

“Fraternità” è il nome nuovo della pace

Da quando è stata istituita nel 1969 la Giornata mondiale per la pace, i pontefici hanno storicizzato i loro messaggi per questa ricorrenza assegnando di volta in volta un nome specifico alla pace. Quello scelto da Bergoglio per il 2014 è “fraternità”, tema assai caro a Chiara Lubich e alla famiglia dei Focolari

Il mondo è una polveriera. Da recenti statistiche apprendiamo che sono una sessantina oggi gli Stati coinvolti in focolai di guerra (24 in Africa, 15 in Asia, 8 in Medio Oriente, 5 nelle Americhe, 8 in Europa), e sono circa 500 i gruppi armati che si fronteggiano (fra milizie-guerrigliere, gruppi di matrice terroristica, formazioni separatiste o anarchiche, cartelli della droga). Le industrie belliche non conoscono crisi e le tragiche conseguenze dei conflitti si riversano sulle inermi e incolpevoli popolazioni civili.

La voce dei pontefici. La pace, dunque, è il problema dei problemi. E tutti i pontefici hanno sempre levata alta la loro voce per condannare la follia della guerra. Per limitarsi al ventesimo secolo, si potrebbero ricordare le severe denunce di Benedetto XV e Pio XII riguardo alle “inutili stragi” consumate nei due conflitti mondiali. Proseguendo poi con Giovanni XXIII, il cui documento più significativo, l’enciclica del 1963 Pacem in terris, sarà ripreso dal Concilio Vaticano II e inserito nella costituzione pastorale Gaudium et spes del 1965.

If your boyfriend is strongly inclined to be jealous, in the future this may be a hindrance to a solid relationship, which should be based primarily on mutual trust.

Although a bit of jealousy is normal and good, too much of it can destroy a relationship, because the jealous partner is already claiming absolute possession of the other person.

That unity to be built between you is not a fusion, nor mutual dependence, but a communion where each one can grow even as an individual, even in their being different from the other, enjoying the freedom to join with another and expand into new possibilities and not in a relationship that limits the growth of the other…

When the partners lean on one another and cannot do anything by themselves, this is very dangerous because if one falls, the other also collapses. A good marriage can come about only if he or she can also stand alone.

Jealousy of this kind is often the symptom of a serious lack of self-esteem – thus a person sees and perceives others as rivals. Subconsciously, this person feels inferior to others, and unloved.

FORTALEZA: SPRIGIONARE L’AMORE

I GMU di Fortaleza ci scrivono:

“Vi scriviamo da Fortaleza, una città del Nordest brasiliano, per raccontare l’esperienza che abbiamo fatto nel nostro Natale.

Tutto è venuto da una inquietudine di una Giovane per un Mondo Unito (GMU). Lei dice: “non è giusto rimanere in un sontuosa cena di Natale mentre tanti che vivono per la strada non hanno niente da mangiare!” Condividendo questo disagio con un altro giovane, lui subito rispondi di si a lanciarsi a fare qualcosa per i più bisognosi.

Il 25 dicembre, ci siamo incontrati tutti insieme. Avevamo poco cibo: un pacco di pane, un po’ di formaggio, mortadella, salsiccia... In nessun momento abbiamo avuto paura di non aver niente da dare, perché il pensiero era di dare più che il pane: era conoscerli, sentirli, guardarli negli occhi... Alla fine, eravamo in otto che preparavano i panini! Tanti hanno portato anche vestiti da dare. Era veramente incredibile vedere la multiplicazione del materiale da donare, perché alla fine avevamo raggiunto più di tre pacchi di pane, acqua, torta... Si vedeva il miracolo!

Parlando con la gente per strada, si vedeva che l’importante non è soltanto il pane, ma soprattutto una parola, un momento per fermare e poter sentirli. Una signora ha detto che aveva febbre, non avevamo nessuna medicina, ma siamo rimasti chiacchierando, ascoltando le sue storie. Quando ci siamo salutati, lei ha ringraziato e ha detto che non aveva più febbre, perché l’abbiamo sentita, perché abbiamo portato (nelle sue parole) “quel pane per l’anima”.

Un GMU scrive:

“Oggi è stato un giorni interessante per me. Da tanto tempo volevo donarmi nel Natale, fare un po’ di più per coloro che sono dimenticati nelle vie della città. Benché avevo un po’ di soldi, ho pensato che ancora molto poco, io potevo dare più. Arrivando lì, ho visto che “il molto” non era interessante, quello che era importante era una chiacchiera, uno sguardo, un sentimento di compassione. Oggi dormo felice, però ancora un po’ inquieto, perché so che posso fare di più. Più del cibo loro hanno bisogno di quello che noi portiamo dentro ma per paura fatichiamo a sprigionare: l’amore.”

Volunteering Work in Lisbon

"Hello everyone,

We are the Youth for the World (Y4UW) from Portugal and this year, we are surveying the city of Lisbon with the desire to promote brotherhood. We have embarked on a project consisting of volunteering work among generations. This project is two-fold:

Children’s Project

“Outskirts of Lisbon: can you imagine what goes on in those neighbourhoods of which nobody talks about? Two Comboni Missionaries sisters and a brother have started giving support to some children, who mostly belong to migrant families living in Camarate. The aim of their work is not only to take them off the streets but also to educate them, giving them a sense of rules and moral training, aside from regular school monitoring.

Through some contacts, we have found out that these Missionaries need the help of young volunteers. Since we are available, we have decided give our assistance in the evening (5:00 pm to 7:00 pm). Our aim is to remedy these shortcomings and bring these children some of our joy and specific gifts.”

Adults’-Seniors’ Project

Accompany on regular or irregular basis adults and seniors who live on their own or residing in nursing homes. Those volunteers who wish to pay regular visits to the elderly, carry out this initiative every 15 days and they are split up into 2 or 3-person teams. They volunteering work consists of listening the elderly persons, conduct recreational activities (board games or sing with them); meet the concrete needs of each person (accompany them for Mass, organize medications, cooking, organizing the house, make small arrangements).

For both projects and in accordance with the number of registered volunteers, we will set up fixed teams that will last of a 3-month period.

I wish that each one of us had four keys.

A key to the door that leads to the back yard: the Lord comes, however, we do not know where and how. He comes to those persons who don’t dare to approach the main door.

A key to the door that leads to the interior: the Lord is more intimate to us than the most profound part of our soul. From there he enters the home of our lives.

A key to the inter-connecting door that has been walled: this walled and plastered door led to our closest neighbours: they are also the ones that are most outsiders, the Lord knocks at our door.

A key to the main door, the portal: on that threshold Jesus, together with Mary and Joseph were turned away.

Let’s not hesitate to let him enter into our lives and into our world in a definite way! Today, are we ready to be his Bethlehem?

La porta del Natale

Vorrei che ognuno di noi avesse quattro chiavi.

Una chiave per la porta che dà sul retro: il Signore viene, dove e come non lo sappiamo. Viene in coloro che non ardiscono accostarsi alla grande porta maestra.

Una chiave per la porta che dà verso l'interno: il Signore ci è più intimo del più profondo dell'anima nostra. Da lì egli entra nella casa della nostra vita.

Una chiave per la porta di comunicazione che è stata murata, ricoperta con l'intonaco, quella che dà su ciò che ci sta accanto: in coloro che ci sono più prossimi, che sono anche coloro che più ci sono estranei, il Signore bussa alla nostra porta.

Una chiave per la porta principale, il portale: su quella soglia Gesù, con Maria e Giuseppe furono respinti. Non esitiamo a lasciarlo decisamente entrare nella nostra vita, nel nostro mondo! Sapremo essere, oggi, la sua Betlemme?

‘Chi non vive per servire, non serve per vivere’

I GMU di Manaus ci mandano gli auguri di BUON NATALE e come regalo la loro gioia scaturita dall'atività fatta coinvolgendo la comunità nel weekend 21/22 dicembre:

“Cari, vogliamo farvi partecipare della felicità che abbiamo sperimentato nel sabato! Siamo andati in 16 nelle vie prossime al mercato del comune, dove c'è tanta povertà ed esclusione, portando dei panini e bevanda, vestiti, panettone, biscotti ed altri regali ni natale a quelli che vivono per quelle strade. Abbiamo trovato persone di tutti i tipi: anziani, donne, ragazzi, ubriachi, drogati. Ed era una gioia immensa andare incontro ad ognuno: dare un ascolto, un abbraccio, toccare mani sporche e screpolate... Tanti erano comossi e ci auguravano tante cose belle. Uno di questi signori, mentre ci ringraziava, ci ha detto qualcosa che ci ha fattto rifletere:

‘Chi non vive per servire, non serve per vivere’.

Abbiamo ricevuto tante lezioni di umiltà e sapienza di questi nostri fratelli.

Alla fine, abbiamo trovato altri due gruppi cattolici portandogli la cena, cosa che ci ha fatto sperimentare tanta gioia e sodisfazione, vedere che ci sono tanti altri che come noi vogliono portare l'amore dove manca. Insieme a loro alcuni di noi che sono infermieri anche hanno fatto delle medicazioni. Solo in questo momento siamo riusciti a fare qualche foto, però nei nostri cuori rimane marcato e ci serve di spinta a non fermarci fino che tutti abbiano degnità e conoscano l'amore.

“An invasion of love in the world”

«Dear young men and women, participants in the Youth Assembly of Religions for Peace,

I have been informed that you have come together in Hiroshima from the various continents of the world to demonstrate and work on behalf of peace. To each and all my warmest greeting, and best wishes that this assembly be rich in proposals and concrete fruits.

There is no need to pause on the importance of what you are doing in these days. The tragic situation of a world that longs for peace but seems unable to attain it is before the eyes of all. And so every gesture towards this goal is meaningful; every effort, every endeavour is a contribution.

But I would say that you who are religious youth, believers in a faith, have a very special task and role to play in the vast workshop that is planet earth. Yes, because you are convinced – no matter what religion you come from – that your neighbour, every neighbour should be respected and loved. In fact the “Golden Rule”, as this precept is called, is present in the Sacred Books of all the great world religions. In practice it says: Do to others as you would have them do to you; desire for others what you desire for yourself; do not do or desire for others that which would cause suffering to you. Love for neighbour, understood in this way, is the most efficacious contribution that the world awaits in our times; it is the key towards solving every problem, the fundamental medicine for every evil.
