VIAGGIO NEL CUORE DEL PERÙ

Avviato il nuovo progetto AMU “Una scuola sulle Ande” e i Giovani per un Mondo Unito della Slovacchia stanno organzzando un ballo per il 14 febbraio, 2014.

E’ stato un viaggio a tratti avventuroso e certamente indimenticabile: a fine novembre Francesco Tortorella del settore progetti AMU si è recato a Bolívar per l’avvio del progetto “Una scuola sulle Ande”. C’erano alcuni aspetti da verificare e altri da approfondire prima di dare ufficialmente il via alla costruzione di una scuola primaria e secondaria, nucleo centrale di questo nuovo progetto.

Rimandando alla scheda tecnica per informazioni piùdettagliate, chiediamo a Francesco qualche impressione a caldo sul suo viaggio.

«Dopo 5 anni di studio e 8 di lavoro nel campo della cooperazione allo sviluppo – ci racconta – ho trovato in Perù un caso tipico esemplare, una sorta di modello di tutto quello che ho studiato, per vari aspetti. In parte per l’impatto che il sistema globale ha su questo Paese, in parte perché dentro di sé contiene le categorie storiche della cooperazione allo sviluppo: dalla distinzione fra primo, secondo e terzo mondo, al binomio Nord/Sud, al più recente concetto di centro/periferia.

Basti pensare che in Perù tutto ruota intorno a Lima, la capitale, dove sono concentrati 1/3 degli abitanti di tutto il Paese. Ogni attività importante si svolge a Lima. Ogni famiglia ha qualcuno che vive a Lima. Lima è sulla costa, sulla direttrice della strada costiera che attraversa tutto il Perù, mentre le comunicazioni verso l’interno sono piuttosto difficoltose.

C’è anche da tener presente l’enorme diversità paesaggistica e culturale fra il territorio costiero, le Ande e la foresta amazzonica.

Ci sono poi molti altri aspetti che si possono considerare riguardo alla globalizzazione, per esempio la dipendenza totale del Perù da 2 prodotti: l’oro e il petrolio.

Il nostro progetto “Una scuola sulle Ande” è nella periferia di un Paese periferico. Andare lì di persona, fisicamente, mi ha fatto rendere conto di ciò che significa vivere in un contesto di parziale isolamento. Qui la strada è stata costruita solo nel ’94. In alcune comunità decentrate ci sono adolescenti che non hanno mai visto un’automobile. Ma vivere in questo posto significa anche, oggi – nel 2013 – rischiare la vita. Ci sono infatti persone che ogni notte prendono il pulmino per andare in città a lavorare, e la strada – stretta, per lunghi tratti sterrata e a strapiombo su ripidissimi pendii, è veramente pericolosa.»

MOVE FOR SOMETHING GREATER

Good morning! Thank you very much for all the support you have given, and all the ideas!

The first part of the program was very strong. We felt there was really a need to do something, as youth. The flow was very good, and moving and encouraging.

We started with singing – “SOMETHING GREATER”, then introduced who Charles Moates (the person who inspired Gen Rosso to perform Streetlight) is and the choices he made in his life, and then the emcees, Ark and Kat introduced who the Youth for a United World are.

Then we had mini “skit” presenting our society followed by what we can do to improve it. At this moment we introduced our United World Project. There was a glimpse of what the project is about, and referred the youth to our booth, where signature sheets where made available for them to sign, a commitment to live the golden rule (do unto others what you would like others do unto you).

There may be another chance for us, if we will be allowed to also put up a booth on the next Gen Rosso tour in Manila in March.

Our next steps would be to plan together for the “Start Again Project”.

How many rules do parents, teachers and educators invent to prevent kids and teenagers from doing what they want? Everything is organized, decided beforehand, and even if I am already 18, they treat me like a kid. But what do they want from me? Trying to follow the rules, I behave so as not to get into trouble, yet I feel so angry inside and want to shout: I want to break free! An almost 18 year old…

Freedom is very important and it’s right that you should want it. However, we need to understand what true freedom consists of. Your desire comes from the fact that you feel “caged in,” while you feel that you can live independently. This need is quite legitimate, and you must clarify things with your parents, or with your teachers and try to share with them your dreams and desires, and what things are important for you.

Try not to keep everything bottled up so that you won’t get into trouble, but speak up and do it before you begin shouting because you are about to explode. If it is difficult to speak to them face-to-face, maybe you can leave them a note, or a message on the internet, for example. The point is that you should not give up... It will be a big help for them too, because adults must also learn how to become parents and educators, and how to accompany you while allowing you to play an active part in your own journey.

The secret of self-esteem

How important it is on a psychological level to know the value of the other person, with his specific traits which make him different from me?

The more profound secret of self-esteem is that of appreciating our neighbours more, and showing respect for every human being. If we try to treat others with importance, we will be surprised to discover how we will value ourselves more. Because true positive self-esteem is not a consequence of great things that we may have achieved, of the wealth we possess, of the road which we have taken, but it springs from that recognition of who we are: God’s beloved creatures.

If we are able to understand this truth, it is also necessary to value other persons for the same reason, since love for oneself cannot be separated from love of others. If we do not love ourselves, on what do we base our love for others? We know that Jesus said: “Love your neighbour as you love yourself.” The word “as” is used to indicate to consider oneself and not to neglect oneself... In fact, the commandment presupposes a certain equivalence of love for myself and for the others. It is not a quantitative equivalence, or else the commandment would have been: Love your neighbour as much you love yourself, which would mean, ironically, that a person who just loves himself must also love others with the same measure.

Diversity is richness – Italy

I am an Italian catholic and during the last days I had the chance to spend a lot of time with some work colleagues: two Muslims (an Iranian and a Turk) and three Buddhists (a Thai and two Japanese).

We spent two very simple days together, during which we shared about the year that had just passed and our perspectives for the coming year. Some moments were pure relax, whereas others were quite intense as we shared about our personal experiences in the light of different faiths. The atmosphere was really fraternal, to the point that it seemed almost impossible that we belonged to different cultures: a Korean, a Chinese, a Thai, two Japanese, a Turk an Iranian and me, an Italian.

La nuova economia che in tanti desideriamo non potrà che venire, rovesciando sguardo e protagonismi, se si riparte dai poveri e dalle periferie

C’è aria di ottimismo a Davos 2014. Si guarda alla grande crisi post-2008 come faccenda ormai superata, da archiviare nei libri di storia e nei cassetti dei ricordi tristi delle famiglie e dei popoli. Peccato che questo ottimismo non abbia basi solide su cui fondarsi. Quindi la domanda cruciale diventa: per quali ragioni Davos vuole offrire all’opinione pubblica un quadro dell’economia diverso da quello ben presente alla grande maggioranza della gente?

La risposta è inscritta nella lista dei protagonisti del “World Economic Forum”, composta dai leader della finanza mondiale e delle grandi lobbies transnazionali, con i rappresentanti politici e delle istituzioni economiche che svolgono, sostanzialmente, il ruolo di spettatori, a volte di clienti. Élites la cui rappresentatività è ridottissima. L’economia capitalistica non è una faccenda democratica: non votano le teste, ma i capitali. In simposi come questo si tocca con mano la verità di quanto ricordava qualche decennio fa Federico Caffè, e cioè che i mercati non sono anonimi ma hanno "nome, cognome e soprannome".

RCA: un’insegnante controcorrente

Anche in situazioni difficili si può generare nell’ambiente di lavoro una cultura di pace e di rispetto dei diritti, specie dei più piccoli.

«Sono insegnante in una scuola primaria cattolica», scrive Eliane della Repubblica Centrafricana (RAC), «e, da quando conosco la spiritualità dell’unità, ho sentito di dover mettere in pratica il Vangelo, anche quando ciò comporta andare contro corrente rispetto ai comuni e diffusi modi di fare».

«Quando sul nostro Paese si è profilata la minaccia della guerriglia – prosegue – ho proposto ai miei alunni di fare insieme il “Time Out”, un momento di preghiera in cui, uniti a tanti altri in tutto il mondo, chiediamo il dono della pace, lì dove si combatte e nel cuore di ogni uomo. Così ogni giorno, anche noi ci fermiamo e preghiamo”».

Costruendo nuovi ponti – Giordania

Vengo da una nazione musulmana dove i cristiani costituiscono il 3% della popolazione. La diversità tra queste due fedi ha cominciato a pesare sulla mia vita da quando ero all'università. Le differenze a volte mi hanno fatto male: mi sentivo come se ci fossero muri che ci dividono.

Mi ricordo una volta in una lezione che un professore disse alcune cose che mi hanno offeso come cristiana. In quel momento, ho capito che era inutile cercare di risponderli. Ma c'era un'altra cosa che potevo fare: potevo affrontare questa difficile situazione senza mai fermarmi ad amare. Inoltre ho pensato che anche Gesù sulla croce era l'emblema di chi è discriminato. Così, in silenzio, ho pregato per questo professore e per tutti i miei compagni di classe. Il giorno seguente, sono rimasto sorpreso quando l'insegnante mi ha detto che si scusava e un nuovo rapporto è cominciato.

La tecnologia non basta

Stavo parlando via computer con un amico, quando il “software” del  mio Pc si è bloccato. Per telefono ci siamo accordati che, sistemato l’inconveniente, ci saremmo risentiti… Ma poi ho avuto altre cose da fare e sono passati alcuni giorni. Lui è rimasto arrabbiato e mi ha accusato di essere maleducato e insensibile. Ci sono rimasto molto male e mi sono preoccupato perché ho pensato di non essere in grado di relazionarmi correttamente con il prossimo… e che quindi la mia vita fosse un fallimento…

Le tante possibilità che oggi abbiamo per comunicare restano strumenti e non ci assicurano la qualità della comunicazione. Non solo, infatti, si guastano (come è successo a te) ma, nella loro immediatezza e freneticità, possono farci illudere di creare rapporti profondi e di capirsi, anche se  spesso non è così.

PHILIPPINES: START AGAIN PROJECT

After distributing Noche Buena packages to 1250 families in 7 different typhoon-struck areas in the Visayan regions, the Noche Buena Project crew decides to move on to Phase II under the new programme - START AGAIN PROJECT.

The START AGAIN PROJECT aims to help rebuild the spirits, lives, and communities of typhoon-struck areas in the Visayan regions with their 7-POINT PLAN including rebuilding schools, medical missions, soup kitchens, school supplies drives, and the like.

Beginning with the community in San Joaquin Parish, Palo, Leyte, the START AGAIN PROJECT hopes to reach as many people as possible.

START AGAIN PROJECT 7-POINT PLAN

This is what we want to do: to help the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda in rebuilding spirits, lives, and communities, beginning with SAN JOAQUIN PARISH in Palo, Leyte.

1. ROOF FOR SCHOOLS – to provide roofs and ceilings to the classrooms destroyed by typhoon Yolanda;
2. SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE – to collect and distribute sets of school supplies for students;
3. YOLANDA MEMORIAL – to build a memorial for the hundreds buried in mass graves who were victims of the typhoon;
4. POTABLE WATER SYSTEMS – to bring potable water systems to typhoon-struck areas to provide drinkable water;
5. HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAMMES – to give scholarships to deserving youth for higher education;
6. SOUP KITCHEN – to conduct feeding programmes especially for children and youth;
7. MEDICAL MISSION – to provide medical care and assistance to the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda.

Professor Klaus Schwab is the Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum.

Seattle, Prague, Genoa, Melbourne. Over a decade ago, these cities were hosts to violent protests against a nebulous enemy: “globalization”.

The protests were aimed at high-level meetings of the international organizations the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, not to mention our own Meetings at the World Economic Forum.

Inside the meetings, while condemnation of the violence was unanimous, opinions of the protesters’ grievances, and what to do about them, were not.

Many inside the meetings understood that as the world was becoming more tightly interconnected as it accelerated into the 21st century, it was also becoming more inequitable and volatile. Few were united about what to do. And so the kind of coordination and agreement that would be necessary to manage the complexity of the new world was elusive.

The world is paying the price for that indecision and disunity today.

Over the past few years, our meetings in Davos have often been dominated by a single major issue facing the global community. From the global financial crisis, the Arab transition and the threatened collapse of the euro, leaders have often arrived with a dominant agenda and in response mode.

Today the situation is different.

Building new bridges – Jordan

I come from a Muslim nation where Christians make up 3% of the population. The diversity between these two faiths began to weigh on my life since I was at university. The differences would sometimes hurt me: I felt like there were walls dividing us.

I remember how one day in class a professor said some things that offended me as a Christian. In that moment, I understood that it was useless to try and respond to him. But there was something else that I could do: I could face this difficult situation without ever stopping to love. I thought that also Jesus on the cross was the emblem of someone who is discriminated. So, in silence, I prayed for this professor and for all my classmates. The following day, I was surprised when the professor told me that he was sorry and a new relationship began.

La differenza è una ricchezza - Italia

Sono italiano cattolico e nei giorni scorsi ho avuto la possibilità di trascorrere lunghi momenti in compagnia di alcuni colleghi di lavoro e di due amici musulmani (una iraniana e l’altro turco) e di tre buddhisti (una thailandese e due giapponesi).

Sono stati due giorni molto semplici passati a raccontarci la vita dell’anno passato e le prospettive che ciascuno ha per il 2012. Ci sono stati momenti di distensione ed altri molto intensi di condivisione su esperienze personali alla luce delle diverse fedi. Il clima è stato davvero fraterno, al punto che sembrava quasi impossibile che, fra i presenti, ci fosse una coreana, una cinese, una thailandese, due giapponesi, una iraniana un turco, un francese ed io, italiano.

Potrei fare molte considerazioni su questa esperienza, alcune di carattere spirituale, altre di tipo psicologico, ma vorrei sottolineare un aspetto, che mi spesso venuto in mente in quei due giorni. Ero l’unico italiano e me lo hanno fatto notare gli altri, quasi con sorpresa. In fin dei conti siamo in Italia e vicino a Roma, la capitale. Eppure, personalmente non ci ho mai pensato perché lo stare insieme fra noi andava ben oltre le differenze culturali, geografiche e religiose.

Philippines - Noche Buena Project

We were able to give out 1,250 Noche Buena packages

The Noche Buena project started out as a simple programme to give out Christmas packages to just 100 families in the community of one Bukas Palad social center. When I started it with a single post on my Facebook account, asking my friends for support, little did I know that it would evolve to something as amazing as what it had become.

I started to collect pledges from individuals to sponsor a Noche Buena for one family as early as September. The response I received was enormous such that I decided to share what I would collect to other Bukas Palad centres as well. When the super typhoon Haiyan struck the Visayan region, we felt that it is them in that region that needs to remember what it truly means to celebrate Christmas. We were amazed at how the original recipients of the Noche Buena packages willingly let go of their share in order to give them to the families in Leyte as to give them hope in the coming of Christ. And so we began our journey of preparation for the Visayan leg of the Noche Buena project.

We decided to visit seven places in Visayas (Tacloban, Palo, Ormoc, Bantayan Island, Sigma, Antique and Kalibo). One of the heartwarming experiences we had was when we learned that in Palo, there were 600 families who have lost everything and would really need the Noche Buena packs. The original allotment for them with the amount of money we had was just 300 packages. But with great trust in the providence of God and the generosity of the Filipino spirit, we said our yes, and we will give 600 packages to this area. And immediately, the money needed for this additional 300 Noche Buena packs arrived. We were also amazed at the response of people to donate toys for the children of Visayas, especially with the stories of the willingness of children to give their most loved toys for the Visayan children who have lost everything.

Brasile: nel Nordest i giovani lanciano la sfida

Quarta edizione della manifestazione “Desafio”, organizzata dai Giovani per un mondo unito del Nordest brasiliano. 350 partecipanti all’appuntamento annuale col motto “Andate verso gli altri”

«Vivere insieme per qualcosa che possa rafforzare il bene nel mondo ci unisce e ci dà la forza, e ci spinge ad andare avanti verso il mondo unito». Sono parole di Igor dei Giovani per un Mondo Unito del Nordest del Brasile.

Ma cos’è “Desafio” (Sfida)?

«“Desafio” è una tre giorni – spiega Igor – di incontro, festa e condivisione delle tante iniziative che i Giovani per un Mondo Unito della nostra regione (che coinvolge sette stati brasiliani) portiamo avanti nelle nostre città. Ogni anno, siamo circa 350 giovani che ci diamo appuntamento nella cittadella “Santa Maria”, in Igarassu (Stato di Pernambuco). Il programma si svolge con temi d’interesse e di approfondimento, la condivisione delle iniziative svolte nelle varie città, vari workshop e dei forum specifici. Molto costruttivi sono i momenti dedicati a conoscere alcune opere sociali portate avanti dai Focolari e l’aiuto concreto che possiamo svolgere in quei giorni, come un nostro segno di amore concreto verso le persone del posto».

Congo: Beyond the Silence

The experience of a young woman who was inspired to save her country, by giving rise to a youth movement in favour of civil rights and duties.

“It’s not easy to describe what we’re going through in North Kivu, Congo, due to the terrible situation of conflict that has been unsettling my country for years. Our history has been filled with so much suffering that is still not overcome.

Since childhood, I belonged to a community of people who were genuinely living the Gospel. When I entered university I found myself in a different world. I saw people reaching to the point of killing one another because of tribal and ethnic differences. Corruption, fraud, revenge and many other evils were the daily fabric of life.

When I graduated, I found work in a non-governmental agency that was working for the rights of Congolese women and particularly for women who had suffered violence and had their consciences enslaved. As I travelled all around the country I was met with the misery of so many people, even though Congo is very rich in natural resources.

CENTRO LA PIRA: MIGRANTI E RIFUGIATI

A tribute to our friend Tom O’Gorman

Tom was taken from us unexpectedly in the early hours of Sunday morning. He had posted a new profile picture of himself on Facebook. He did not know that he would meet his Lord so soon, or that the circumstances of his death would prove so brutal and senseless. But such is the way it was, and we are left mourning a good and faithful friend, who witnessed to the values he believed in: faith in God, the Gospel, Truth and universal brotherhood.

Tom came in touch with the Focolare about fifteen years ago and its spirituality based on love of neighbour, became a touchstone in his life. A man of ideas, he liked to debate politics, arts, music and media also allowing the Gospel to imbue his personality and life. He was a real ‘people person’ always available to others with his wit, optimism, insight and creativity. You couldn’t ask for better company

Many tributes have been written to Tom: as a Catholic journalist, from Sarah McDonald from CatholicIreland.net; as a member of the Pro Life Campaign from its chairman Joe McCarroll; and as a fine researcher with the Iona Institute from David Quinn.

In the community of the Focolare, we are grateful to Tom for his great support and enthusiasm for the youth branches of the movement, in particular Youth for a United World (Y4UW). For years Tom worked with young people enjoying the many challenges and obstacles that went along with this. He was practical and expected the most of them.

He had the ability to blend with younger people. He would happily sit and chat away with them for hours. He found common ground – sports or movies, a game of UNO. Then he would begin a discussion on the deeper questions that many young people have inside, but perhaps do not get a chance to talk about.

He was generous with his time, willing to deepen personal relationships with cinema trips and cups of coffee, even though he drank neither tea nor coffee. His wide circle of friends loved his impressions. At a concert at a Focolare event some years ago when Tom was MC, he managed to keep up his famous Yoda from Star Wars impression for the entire show.

Da Bangui, Republica Centro African, i nostri ci scrivono della situazione che stanno vivendo:

“Carissimi tutti,

sappiamo che molti seguono con attenzione l’evolversi della situazione in RCA. Ancora negli ultimi giorni ci sono stati scontri in alcuni quartieri di Bangui, è una situazione prevedibile visto che il disarmo non è semplice e persistono zone di influenza, o possiamo dire d’occupazione dei combattenti ‘Anti-Balaka’ che si contrappongono ai ‘Seleka’.

Ma è anche vero che il centro città e le strade principali della capitale sono sorvegliate dalle truppe francesi, questo ha permesso una piccola ripresa delle attività e della circolazione.

Papa Francesco, un comunicatore nato

Ho preso quasi uno shock quando un omaccione tatuato, un ‘mangiapreti’, che vendeva biscotti in un mercato della Val d’Aosta, alla notizia che avevo finito le ferie e rientravo a Roma, mi ha detto: “Saluta Francesco!” con un tono come se il Papa fosse il suo amico più caro.

Un’altra sorpresa è stata la notizia che Vanity Fair, rivista non certo di Chiesa ma di star, gossip e moda, aveva eletto papa Francesco “uomo dell’anno”, dedicandogli la copertina del numero del 10 luglio 2013 e scrivendo: «I suoi primi cento giorni lo hanno già messo in testa alla classifica dei leader mondiali che fanno la storia. Ma la rivoluzione continua»[1] .

Papa Francesco si è presentato con umiltà fin dal suo primo incontro con la gente, si è inchinato ed ha chiesto preghiere. Una novità di stile che ha subito destato l’interesse dei media.

Today, we need the cultural courage to stand up against the suffering caused by an individual view which is produced by an obsolete anthropology and an economic ideology of a single dimension

“...(T)he crisis have given many and such denials of what appear strictly to be scientific estimates, advanced by economists. It is no wonder that any layman could believe to be authorized to proclaim the bankruptcy of the political economy... To the voices, some calumny, not a mitigating factor is lacking. In fact, many economists have sinned of immodesty”. These are the words of political scientist Robert Michels, author of the first book entitled “Economics and Happiness” (1917). He said this in 1933, but it seems to be written today.

Immodesty, or superiority, is not the sole prerogative of economic science, since it is a well-known universal anthropological tone. At certain times, however, the community of economists has been affected by a particularly stubborn and widespread form of immodesty. Faced with obvious deficiencies and errors of their discipline, instead of giving in to the force of facts and getting into a crisis, and instead of humbly revising ancient facts and dogmas, they stubbornly returned all criticism to the sender. The present is one of those times, and there is an increasingly strong need for a major overhaul of many dogmas and axioms of economic theory and practice.

Ecco un film quasi inevitabile: tra effetto moda e proposta di modelli comportamentali per adolescenti, i nostri teens si stanno precipitando per confermare un grande  successo, con centinaia di milioni di $ di incassi.

Se qualche genitore (tra i rari che ancora si interessano ai film che vedono i figli) è rimasto scioccato da certi aspetti della storia, i figli sono conquistati da un racconto avvincente e - bisogna riconoscerlo - da un prodotto di eccellente qualità.

"La Ragazza di Fuoco" è il secondo capitolo di Hunger Games (vedi), con un cast sempre eccellente, e una realizzazione ancora più riuscita della prima. 

Il regista Francis Lawrence – che ha sostituito Gary Ross nonostante il bel successo del primo film – sottolinea l'aspetto politico del film, facendo della protagonista Katniss una speranza per i popoli oppressi.  Le spirali del potere, la condizione dei ghettizzati, la semplificazione dei rapporti tra buoni e cattivi : Hollywood non si smente, evitando con cura un'analisi troppo approfondita o complessa, pur non cedendo mai alla banalità.

(…) It will not be presumptuous of us if we also add, among our predecessors, the name of another outstanding Nobel Peace Prize winner, the late Rev Martin Luther King Jr. He, too, grappled with and died in the effort to make a contribution to the just solution of the same great issues which we have had to face as South Africans. We stand here today as nothing more than a representative of the millions of people across the globe, the anti-apartheid movement, the governments and organisations that joined with us in fight, not to fight against South Africa as a country or any of its peoples, but to oppose an inhuman system (the apartheid) and sue for a speedy end to the apartheid crime against humanity. (…) Because of their courage and persistence for many years, we can, today, even set the dates when all humanity will join together to celebrate one of the outstanding human victories of our century.

Nel periodo natalizio la città è particolarmente bella: luci e decorazioni accompagnano chi passeggia per le strade del centro. Ma la mia sete di Natale non era appagata... Una testimonianza

Bangkok è una città bella, interessante, variegata e gentile, dove ti puoi trovare bene subito per l’accoglienza che la gente riserva a tutti, sorattutto agli stranieri. Sei in difficoltà? Chiedi aiuto a chi passa e stai sicuro che una mano ti verrà data. Ai “thai” piacciono gli stranieri, è sempre stato così. Sono thai, cioè liberi. Vuoi conquistare i loro cuori? Amali.

In questo periodo “freddo” (si arriva anche a 18 gradi) si sta bene. In giro si notano tante decorazioni: renne, babbi Natale a non finire, slitte, regali, orsetti appesi agli alberi, neve artificiale e... solo questo? No. Le chiese cristiane sono presenti e di tante denominazioni: il Natale è sentito anche come festa religiosa e sempre di più la gente sa di cosa si tratta. Ci sono gruppetti di studenti che cantano canzoni e raccolgono fondi per le vittime dell’inondazione nelle Filippine, per esempio: tra pochi giorni ne ospiterò uno a casa. È un piacere vedere questi giovani spendere tempo ed energie per altri che ne hanno bisogno. Qualche settimana fa sono stato chiamato nella baraccopoli più grande della città, non lontana da casa, per parlare del Natale ai bimbi di un centro di aiuto. È stata un’occasione unica poter stare con i più poveri e vivere insieme un momento di gioia e di dono reciproco. Perché il Natale è anche questo.

Blessed Chiara Luce Badano has an impact on youth all over the world

Three years after Chiara Luce Badano was declared blessed by the Catholic Church, young (and not so young!) people all over the world have taken up her torch. They are spreading her story and following her courageous “yes” to trust in God’s love and his will in their lives.

She was chosen as an intercessor at the World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this summer. “A saint dressed in jeans” was the title of a musical at the WYD dedicated to sharing her life with the young people there.

Chiara Luce grew up an only child in Sassello, Italy. At 17, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive and painful form of bone cancer. Yet she trusted God’s plan, saying “If you want it, Jesus, I want it too.” 

October 29 is her feast day. Here is what some young people from around the world wrote us about her impact on their lives.

A call to everyone

When I think of Chiara Luce Badano, the phrase, “A life lived to the full” always comes to my mind. Through her experience I have understood that the significance of our lives is not measured in how long we live or how many things we have accomplished or experienced, rather in how we lived it. She has given me the courage to embrace wholeheartedly the reality of each present moment, and to live it to the full.

Three years ago, the young people of the Focolare in the Midwest U.S. decided to have a program on the life of Chiara Luce Badano. Since many knew that I enjoy writing songs, my youth coordinator at the time, Margaret, asked me if I could write a song for it.

Facebook non tira più tra i giovani?

La stampa specializata conferma la facile mutazione delle preferenze dei giovani su internet. Riflessi sul mercato.

Facebook non è più di moda tra i giovani. Pare che alcuni si sentano addirittura “imbarazzati” all’idea di essere accostati al social network più popolare al mondo. È quello che emerge da un articolo dell’antropologo inglese Daniel Miller, pubblicato sulla rivista The Conversation e recentemente riportato su Wired, il quale ha condotto uno studio sugli adolescenti inglesi di età compresa tra i 16 e i 18 anni. La ragione di questo imbarazzo? È presto detto:

“Semplicemente non puoi essere giovane e libero se sai che i tuoi genitori possono avere accesso ad ogni tua indiscrezione”, argomenta Miller. “I giovani tengono allo stile e allo status che hanno in relazione ai loro coetanei, e Facebook semplicemente non è più considerato figo”.

“One of the difficulties that families find when moving to US is the education system and bureaucracy.

Especially when it is time to apply to College…

Also for some of the Y4UW that moved to near Washington, DC with their families, this is a challenge.

When they shared this struggle, another couple who also lives for a united world, had an idea: since they went through the whole process with their own children and are so familiar with the whole process, why not offer their help?

So one evening, they gather with two other families: one from Egypt and another one from Korea and went through the whole process and answer to all their questions.

It was an amazing evening! Everyone participated in the discussion, young and adults, and there was such a big sense of peace and serenity among all and more clarity in which steps to take next.

It was an experience of being part of a larger “family”, even in such a different country! They now decided to keep in touch in the future and keep helping each other.”

FRATERNITA’ NELL’UGUAGLIANZA - VINCERE OGNI DISCRIMINAZIONE

Ad un mese dalla morte di Nelson Mandela, vogliamo ricordare questo grande uomo attraverso dei stralci del suo discorso quando ha ricevuto il Premio Nobel per la Pace nel 1993

“(...) Estendo il mio sentito ringraziamento al Comitato per il Nobel per averci insignito del premio nobel per la pace. (…) Non voglio essere presuntuoso se aggiungo anche, tra i nostri predecessori, il nome di un altro eccezionale vincitore, il defunto reverendo Martin Luther King Jr. Anche lui lottò e morì per dare un contributo alla soluzione delle stesse grandi questioni che noi abbiamo dovuto affrontare come cittadini del Sud Africa. (…)

Siamo qui oggi come semplici rappresentanti di milioni di persone in tutto il mondo, il movimento anti-apartheid, i governi e le organizzazioni che hanno lottato con noi, non per combattere contro il Sud Africa come paese o contro uno dei suoi popoli, ma per opporsi al sistema inumano (dell’apartheid) e impegnarsi per una veloce fine dei crimini contro l’umanità causati dall’apartheid.
