Melbourne, Australia: Discovering what unites us

On Sunday 1 May the Youth for a United World (Y4UW) of Melbourne, Australia, met together a youth group from the Kadhampa Buddhist Society.
The meeting had been prepared together with the coordinators of the Kadhampa youth over a period of time and was a real experience of discovering the riches in each other’s lives and traditions in the unity that grew throughout the day.
The meeting began at the Kadhampa temple where the Buddhist youth and coordinators shared with us a little about their faith and activities. We finished with both groups taking part in a programme together at the Mariapolis Centre in Wantirna, Melbourne. The Y4UW shared some of their experiences and also a video and songs from their interreligious dialogue concert at World Youth Day in Sydney. We also spoke about United World Week, and the Buddhist youth were happy to have built a moment of unity together with us. A forum organised by Kadhampa allowed us to share about how we try to live our daily lives from our respective backgrounds. This was a real enrichment for all of us hearing of similar struggles and challenges.
The evening finished with a dinner together and this was a further chance to share experiences and ask questions. During dinner both groups agreed to work together for a joint fundraiser in July or August for a charity cause to be decided on together. At the end nobody felt like going home and we left knowing we had lived a special moment of unity together.
