Genfest History: 1990's & 2000's

1990 – Rome
“A United World – History in the making”: The fall of the Berlin wall  between East and West seems to accelerate our striving for a united world. After so many years, youth from Eastern part of Europe can finally participate in the Genfest, held at the Palaeur Stadium of Rome. They are welcomed by the very person who greatly contributed to this change: John Paul II. A video link-up broadcasts the Genfest via satellite to every corner of the world.

1993 - 130,000 young people arrange to meet through 56 national Genfests as a sign of the unity of peoples.

1995 – Rome
“United World: Let’s show it”: A strong media exposure through 4 satellite transmitters, 55 national TV and 350 regional stations, and for the first time a live internet transmission, broadcast the message of the Genfest to millions of people. The first United World Week is inaugurated.

2000 – Rome
At the Flaminio Stadium of Rome, the Genfest becomes a part of the Jubilee World Youth Day. All youth are invited to bear witness, as Chiara Luce Badano, to an ideal worth giving one’s life for: unity.
