What’s the core idea behind “72 hours without compromise”?
The scope of this activity is to bring young people together in groups of 15 to 30 to perform charity work during a period of 72 hours.
At the beginning of the action, the participants will be divided into groups and given the task which they have to fulfil. The task will be a surprise for most of them (the participants can develop their own projects too). These tasks can imply social and ecological issues such as: renovating social services, organizing an interreligious festivity in a parish, performing a theatre play together with inhabitants of an old-people’s home, taking part in ecological actions such as forest cleaning, liquidate garbage heaps etc.
The aim of the action is to get to know the life environment of other groups of people on the margins of society. Prejudices can be eliminated by living and working together and by raising attention to their societal problems, participants can be motivated to contribute to a more inclusive society.
Another aim is to evoke young people’s sensitivity for social problems and demonstrate to them, that acting in solidarity does change people’s lives. The participants can learn not to close their eyes to social problems and thus become active citizens, participating in society up to a political level.

72 hours in Europe:
In 2012 the action will take place in Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia. The action contains around 1500 individual activities in just as many locations in the applying countries. Due to the strong local presence of the applying organisations (through the tight net of parishes, social institutions etc.), actions will be taking place in urban as well as in rural areas. Actions are performed in social institutions (old people’s homes, homeless shelters, kindergartens, youth centres, parishes), public space (maintenance work, awareness-raising) and in the countryside (reforestation, cleaning of rivers), depending on the task of the individual activity.
Dates of the “72h 2012” Action in each country:
27/09-30/09: Bosnia and Herzegovina
11/10-14/10: Hungary
12/10-14/10: Czech Republic
17/10-20/10; Austria
18/10-21/10: Slovakia
25/10-29/10: Slovenia
Organising in Hungary:
The Hungarian organiser of the project is the Ecumenical Youth Foundation (Ökumenikus Ifjúsági Alapítvány - ÖKI). It was founded by major Hungarian churches to motivate, activate young Christians to step over denominational differences to play active role in their communities or peer groups lives through participating in projects focusing on youth problems. "72 Hours" is a unique field for our target group for strengthening social and environmental awareness while helping them to volunteering (having weak traditions in Hungary), a good means of informal learning various skills and responsibility.
ÖKI is responsible for the overall Hungarian setup of the project, being its legal, logistic, financial and administrative backbone. We are responsible for fundraising and the finances of the project (grants etc.), the (central) media relations, central communication, central purchases etc.
Apart from the local (Hungarian) responsibilities, ÖKI is the partner organisation of KJÖ in the international cooperation in applications, exchange projects, joint follow-up, sharing know-how with other partner organisations implementing the project in different countries.
