Eagle Rock in Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles was the destination of a hike to raise money for the tsunami victims in Japan. Everyone found sponsors and gathered donations from friends, colleagues and neighbours.
Before putting on our backpacks, we welcomed everyone and took a moment to speak about Youth for a United World (YFUW) and our efforts to help the tsunami victims. We then offered an activity to carry out which would help the hikers get to know one another better as we headed up the mountain. Then we grabbed our water and lunches and took off. There were many opportunities to make a new friend, to ask questions or simply comment on the amazing nature that surrounded us. It was a gorgeous day and when we arrived at the top, the view was breath taking.
After a few minutes to look around and soak it all in, we ate lunch and continued getting to know one another. Afterwards we spoke about World Unity Week and other activities which were taking place in different parts of the world. Before heading back down, we took turns introducing a person we got to know along the way to the rest of the group.
At the end of the hike everyone had expressed how they enjoyed the day and suggested that we get together again soon.
The youth in Northern California held their hike-a-thon with a smaller group.
We hiked 10 miles at Rancho San Antonio County Park. Along the hike we too had the chance to talk and get to know one another more. We found it easy to share about how we live and why we want to help those in need.
As we reached the top of a 45 degree incline we rested and gazed at the majestic view of nature. Then we read a small reflection and shared some experiences of how we live.
Everyone was happy for the chance to spend the day together.
