Organizing
an event to keep the town alive
There
are some disadvantages to living in a small town, such as not having many
activities for young people or even adults to do on the weekends. In the town
where I grew up, the closest movie theatre is 20 minutes away. Living on a
small island, we think twice before going that distance, plus we have to
consider the cost since many people are facing a challenging economic situation
these days.
Looking
at the way things are and trying to find ways for families and people from the
town to spend time together, the youth of my parish decided to organize a movie
night in the public square. To use the public square, we had to ask permission
from the local government agencies. We tried to love the directors of the
agencies and the mayor by giving a good description of the activity and its
purpose: bringing people together in a safe environment by watching an
inspirational movie “under the stars.” Immediately, they agreed because they
liked this goal and also because it was the first time an activity like this was
taking place in town.
As
soon as we had the approval, we started to make a portable screen, as big as
the ones in movie theatres. We also involved people from the parish to help us
promote the event, to look for nachos with cheese, drinks and candy. People and
businesses donated all of these things, sharing whatever they had with us, and
this was beautiful because we wanted to give everything to the community free
of charge.
The
day arrived, and we were surprised by the number of people who came. A man came
to us and said, “Thank you for doing this. It is important to keep the town
alive.” Then, he gave us a bottle of soda. From that man’s gesture, we
understood that this small act of love for the community would help to build
relationships among us all and help us get to know each other better.
