WHO ARE THE YOUTH FOR A UNITED WORLD

WHO ARE WE?
We are the “Youth for a United World (Y4UW) Movement” founded by Chiara Lubich in 1985. It is part of the wide ranging Focolare Movement. Our age varies between 17 to 30 years and we come from different walks of life. We are youth from all over the world and we belong to different ethnic groups, nationalities and cultures. Many of us profess different creeds, whilst some of us don’t have a religious belief. We all share a common commitment to build a united world, devoting ourselves, both personally and collectively, to a great ideal: universal brotherhood. We strive to make humanity one big family where the identity of each person is respected.
WHAT YOU CAN DO?
Personal commitment: In your day-to-day like you can put into practice the so-called Golden Rule present in many societies and religious traditions: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. In this way, young people belonging to different religions are prompted to live according to their doctrines, whereas young people having other convictions can carry out concrete initiatives in favour of their neighbour, thus expressing the highest human values
Emergency relief interventions: You can participate to relief actions aimed at giving a quick response to specific emergency situations in the world (earthquakes, floods, war, famine ...), either by direct intervention on the spot or by participating in fundraisers to assist the populations in need.
Social activities: You can participate to various types of micro projects that are carried out either on continuous basis or one-off initiatives, in response to the social needs of your city, neighbourhood, university, etc… In this way, we try to follow all the possible ways to build unity among generations, between ethnic groups, between the rich and the poor, with those who suffer and not only...
Spreading the network: You can spread the Youth for a United World network by involving your friends, relatives, neighbours and all those people who would like to commit themselves towards building a united world. Together with them or independently you can carry out micro projects in your area or participate in emergency relief actions.

United World Week:
Since 1996, we are faithfully to this world-wide commitment: the United World Week (UWW). These days are marked by actions, rallies, conferences and cultural debates in order to influence the public opinion in various countries and to witness together that a united world is possible. We want to propose to our cities, to national and international institutions, both public and private, and to everyone in general to participate in promoting and enhancing initiatives in favour of universal brotherhood.
Sharing with Africa:
“Sharing with Africa” aims at building bridges between young people from the African continent and young people from all over the world. It has a long history and it started off in 1969 as “Operation Africa”, thus giving special attention to Fontem, a little town witnessing mutual love and unity, located in the hearth of Cameroun. This project was re-launched in 2000 as “Project Africa” and entrusted to the Youth for a United World with the aim at widening the vision to the whole African continent.
Through “Sharing with Africa” we want to bring out the richness of the African cultures so that they it may be shared between young people of the African continent and the young people from other continents
United World Project:
The “United World Project” was first launched during the Genfest, an international gathering in 2012. It aims at drawing people’s attention to humanity’s journey towards fraternity and the means to achieve this is an international and permanent Observatory on universal fraternity. Its purpose is to increase and spread the culture of fraternity, not only by living universal fraternity on a personal level, but also in civil society and international institutions. The
Everyone is invited to contribute to this project in two ways: by endorsing the Project and committing oneself to living for universal fraternity and by implementing and identifying micro and macro initiatives of fraternity.

Genfest:
The Genfest is a meeting of young people who want to show the world that universal brotherhood, a united world, is an Ideal worth living for. On this event, organized by the Youth for a United World, on-going activities, projects and initiatives are shared. It is a chance to exchange and compare ideas for those who see a background rich in challenges in today’s world, where there is opportunity for change, where the other is placed at the centre. It is an invitation to set ourselves in motion with the certainty that each person is a protagonist of their own history and of History. This can have an influence on the great afflictions of our world, contributing to the breakdown of barriers, indifference, prejudices and egoism.
